Chapter 10

The class bell rang, and the math teacher came into the class and put the stack of test papers in his hand on the desk with a “snap”. “Students, I found a serious problem among you. Most of you have copied your homework. Ok, stand up for me. Let me see who dared to do such a thing.”

The classroom became very quiet as you could hear a pin drop. The guilty students were terrified that the teacher would catch them.

“No one is going to stand, right? Dare to do it but dare not admit it; wait for my roll call one by one.”

Yu Zhiyi, who had copied answers from her friend, was already trembling and even wanted to admit it, but was held tightly by Qiao Lezhi.

It was the first time Yu Zhiyi dared to do such a thing, and now she was terrified.

The teacher gave some time to the guilty students, but no one stood up. Finally, he couldn’t hold back, took a piece of paper, and started to read aloud the names written on it.

“Zhang Jiazhen.”

“Chu Heyi.”

 “Zhen Yan.”

Students stood up one by one as the teacher read their names. They had actually copied homework from others, and the teacher had caught them red-handed.

When Yi Zhiyi heard that Qiao Lezhi was also called, she felt that she was doomed.

She was like sitting on thousands of needles, but she didn’t hear her name until the teacher called the last name.

Yu Zhiyi was both surprised and delighted!

“You people, don’t say that the teacher wronged you.” The math teacher picked up a piece of chalk, turned around, and wrote a fill-in-the-blank question on the blackboard. He then tapped on the blackboard and said, “Among the students who stood up, what is the answer to this question?”

When coping  the answers, some students had not read the questions, and some had a little impression of the questions but didn’t dare to answer.

The math teacher hated Iron for being weak. “If you dare not answer, I will answer for you. The square root of two is written on your papers!”

The guilty students were very puzzled. ‘What happened to the root number two?’ 

That was the first question of the fill-in-the-blank question, and they copied the answer from the class monitor, Shi Yi. So how could it be wrong?

The math class representative looked at Shi Yi and asked in a low voice, “Class monitor, didn’t they copy answers from your paper? I remember the answer to that question is π.”

Shi Yi twirled the signature pen between his fingers and replied, “Yes, I wrote π.” However, he had written π sloppy, and it could be mistaken for the root number two.

One or two students could make this mistake, but when more than a dozen people made the same mistake, it would definitely get the teacher’s attention.

Even though things had changed like this, the students who copied answers couldn’t blame their class monitor. They could only suffer for themselves.

After the math period was over, Yu Zhiyi purposely passed by Shi Yi’s seat and handed him a note. There, she had written “Sorry”.

He looked it over, crumpled the note into a ball, and threw it into the trash can. He never needed to hear that word from her.

On the way home from school, Yu Zhiyi followed Shi Yi slowly.

Shi Yi stopped suddenly, making Yu Zhiyi bump into Shi Yi’s back directly.

“Ouch.” She rubbed her aching nose.

“so stupid.”

“Brother, I’m sorry.”

“Don’t tell me “I’m sorry”, I don’t like to hear that from you.” Shi Yi said angrily. 

“Then I won’t say anymore. Brother… I didn’t mean to lie to you; I left my math paper in the classroom yesterday, so I just…”

When she got the marked math paper, she realised that Si Yi had rewritten her answers, so she knew that Shi Yi had discovered that she had copied.

“Brother, don’t be angry; I will never do it again.” She immediately raised three fingers and promised, “I swear.”

Shi Yi glanced at her lightly but still didn’t say a word.

In order to coax him, Yu Zhiyi went straight to Shi’s home with her schoolbag on her back to do her homework. “Brother, how do I do this?”

Shi Yi: “…”

Despite how the little girl tried to coax Shi Yi, he didn’t give her any face.

Seeing Yu Zhiyi’s pitiful appearance, even Ning Suya couldn’t stand it anymore and scolded her son. “Okay, what did Yiyi do? Why don’t you let it go?” Ning Suya usually didn’t like to get involved in children’s affairs; even if they quarrelled, she believed that they had their own ways to reconcile, but she had never seen these two children quarrel like this before. Ning Suya was a little worried and asked again, “Are you really angry with Yiyi?”

Shi Yi shook his head and replied, “No.”

Ning Suya: “Then who are you showing this temper for?”

“Whoever has a guilty conscience will see,” he said. ‘If I forgive easily for the first time, then she will easily make mistakes in the future, so let her realise from the very beginning that she can’t lie to me.’

Ning Suya turned her head to look at the little girl who was trying to peel the sunflower seeds, feeling distressed. ‘This little girl is very innocent; how can she beat my young son, who has become a spirit?

Yu Zhiyi peeled the sunflower seeds and brought them to Shi Yi, who liked to eat this kind of snack, and smiled flatteringly. “Brother, eat sunflower seeds.”

Shi Yi glanced at the little girl, then took a small sunflower seed and handed it to Yu Zhiyi’s mouth and warned, “Lie to me next time…”

Before he finished speaking, Yu Zhiyi waved her hands again and again and said, “No, there will be no next time, absolutely not!”

Shi Yi thought that the younger sister would always be obedient and behave according to his expectations.

Unexpectedly, in the second year of junior high school, Yu Zhiyi received a love letter.

One day, when Shi Yi opened Yu Zhiyi’s bag to get a pen, he found a pink envelope inside the bag. Seeing that, he felt annoyed and was about to throw it away, but before he did that, Yu Zhiyi grabbed the envelope and refused to give it to him.  “It’s not for you…” she muttered.

He smelled something unusual and asked with narrowed eyes, Yo, if it’s not mine, then it’s… yours?”

The guess was right, causing Yu Zhiyi’s cheeks to turn red. She hesitated at first but didn’t lie. “Yes, it’s mine.”

Shi Yi raised his eyebrows. “Have you read it?”

Yu Zhiyi shook her head.

“So what are you going to do about it?” he asked.

“I haven’t thought about it yet.” She felt embarrassed to look at it, but she couldn’t throw it decisively like Shi Yi.

Shi Yi smiled bluntly. ‘This little idiot is getting more and more courageous, and she started to receive love letters behind my back! Still not willing to throw it away?’ “There’s nothing to look at, it’s best to throw it away.”

“This is not good……” the little girl said.

Seeing that the little girl was covering the letter tightly, Shi Yi secretly gritted his teeth. But in the next second, he turned into a serious big brother, and explained the truth to her word by word, “Brother understands your thoughts, but you are only 13 years old now, and it will be very tiring if you have to devote energy to dealing with these problems besides studying. And if you respond to him, then both of you will be in trouble.”

Yu Zhiyi: “Do you think so?”

Shi Yi: “Hmm.” 

Yu Zhiyi thought Shi Yi’s words were reasonable, so she agreed. “What my brother said makes sense.”

Shi Yi: “Leave this matter to your brother, OK?”

Yu Zhiyi: “All right.”

Just like that, Shi Yi easily took the love letter from her hand and opened it to read. From his point of view, it was well-written, but the contents seemed unsightly. Instead of throwing it away directly, he took the letter and went to find that male classmate himself and said, “Please don’t disturb Yiyi in the future.”

Everyone knew that Shi Yi was Yu Zhiyi’s elder brother, and if the elder brother expressed his opinion, it represented Yu Zhiyi’s thoughts.

The male student became shy, and he took back the letter.

Shi Yi thought it was over, but after the midterm test, the class teacher changed the seating arrangements, and that male student and Yu Zhiyi became deskmates. So how could Shi Yi tolerate it?

The class monitor walked into the office with a righteous face, stood in front of the class teacher, and sincerely made a suggestion: “Teacher, I found that there are two students who always talk in class. Maybe it’s puppy love. I suggest that they be separated.”

A week later, the teacher called out Yu Zhiyi and the male classmate to switch places.

On the way back from school, Yu Zhiyi mentioned that casually. “I don’t know why the teacher suddenly asked me to change places today.”

Shi Yi: “It sounds like you are reluctant.”

Yu Zhiyi: “No, it’s just weird.”

Shi Yi: “Oh, maybe the teacher doesn’t like it.”

The two separated at the gate of the community and went home separately.

When Yu Zhiyi walked into her house, she heard her grandmother on the phone. Because her grandma spoke loudly, she could hear what she was saying.

“Are you planning to buy a house?”

“Don’t buy here.”

“Then how about Yiyi’s school?”

“Oh, as long as you have arrangements.”

When the phone class was over, Yu Zhiyi asked her grandmother directly, “Grandma, what house were you talking about just now?”

“Oh, you are back, I called your parents just now. They said that they have saved money over the years and plan to buy a house in the city. We will be able to move into a new house soon.”

“Wow!” But when she was happy, she thought of another question, “Are we going to leave here after buying a new house?”

“Of course, if you want to buy a new house, you have to sell the old house. In this way, we can pay more for the new house.”

“Are you going to leave here after buying a new house? Grandma, can we not go to the new house first? I want to stay here.” If she moved to a new house, how could she go to school with Shi Yi? She had never thought of being separated from Shi Yi.

That night, Yu Zhiyi had a dream. In her dream, she was carrying a suitcase and following her parents, leaving Shi Yi.
