Chapter 18

Yu Zhiyi’s grandma came out from the operation theatre, and when she woke up, she wanted to call her granddaughter, but no one answered the phone. She had been in the hospital for examination and treatment before. Sometimes when Yu Zhiyi called, it would be interrupted when the nurse came in. Sometimes when she called, she could only tell her granddaughter, “Yiyi, grandma will be home in a while. Wait for me. To come back.”

Before the operation, the grandmother’s condition was very bad, and she thought she wouldn’t be able to come alive after the surgery.

“Xiaoqing, why can’t I get through the phone at home?”

“Ah…” Ruan Qing didn’t know either.

When Ruan Qing divorced, Yu Kai called every day to ask for a reunion, making Ruan Qing annoyed. So later, she didn’t answer the phone. Just as Ruan Qing was about to call Yu Kai, her little daughter ran into the ward with a strawberry-flavoured ice cream in her hand. “Look, Mom, Uncle Zhao bought me ice cream!”

There was another man following Yu Xinyan, wearing a suit, and he looked much more pleasing to the eye than Yu Kai.

“Hey, don’t spoil her,” Ruan Qing said with a smile.

“It’s okay, the child likes to eat it, so it’s okay to buy one for her.” The man smiled and shook his head, then put the supplements he brought with both hands on the table and greeted the old woman on the hospital bed.

Grandma knew that Yu Kai was at fault for her daughter’s divorce, and now a reliable person had appeared, so she didn’t mention anything related to her ex-husband in front of him. Because of that, they forgot to check on Yu Zhiyi.

When Shi Yi rushed to the hospital, it was already afternoon. Then he inquired about the ward number and rushed there. On the way, he was wondering how the little girl fell ill enough to be admitted to the hospital.

When he saw her, he felt his heart pricking from a needle. The little girl’s forehead was wrapped with white gauze; her right cheek was also covered, and there was a scar on her chin.

‘Is she still the Yu Zhiyi that I know?’  He thought with teary eyes.

The girl who had always smiled at him and acted like a little baby was lying lifelessly in a hospital bed.

Even Ning Suya, who came over, was shocked. “How could this happen?”

Yu Zhiyi’s aunt was guarding Yu Zhiyi and hesitated for a while before answering. “It’s a wine bottle…” She could still remember the scene. Yu Zhiyi knocked on their door, crying with blood all over her face. They found Yu Kai still lying in the room, drunk and unconscious. “At that time, her uncle and I carried her to the hospital overnight. The doctor took out the glass fragments and put stitches on her face. ” It was so cruel to say it, let alone to the little girl who had experienced all this herself.

“When I sent her here, she kept crying.” As the aunt spoke, she covered her face and cried.

She agreed that she was usually a little resentful and cruel, but her heart was truly moved when she saw her husband holding her skinny, small niece, who looked as though she might pass away if she wasn’t cautious. “After all, it’s the kid we watched grow up. I really don’t know how her father can do it,” she said, starting to blame Yu Kai.

Seeing that she couldn’t control her emotions, Ning Suya quickly comforted her and pulled Yu Zhiyi’s aunt out. “Let’s go out and talk; don’t disturb the patient.”

There were other people in this ward, so it was really not the place to talk about things.

Shi Yi didn’t say a word but heard the whole story from beginning to end. He understood Yu Kai was violent towards his daughter! Previously, he thought that even if Yu Zhiyi was unhappy living with her father, she still had a father, but never thought he would treat her this way.

Shi Yi bent over and looked at the little girl, who was in a deep sleep. “Yiyi, I’m sorry… Brother is late.”

He almost lost her. ‘Why didn’t I realise she was going through this much pain? She always hides her pain, trying to show the best side to everyone, careful to please, afraid of being abandoned.’ How could he trust her just by listening to the words “it’s okay” on the phone? He should have known! “Yiyi, you are still a little idiot, doesn’t your brother love you enough? Why didn’t you say that you were wronged?” He wanted to tell her personally that he would stay with her forever. 　

Someone once asked him, “Don’t you hate those immature children the most? You despise their cognition that can’t keep up with your IQ, so why are you guarding Yu Zhiyi?”

His answer was always, “I am willing!”

Yes, he was willing to guard Yu Zhiyi!

From her babbling to her toddlerhood, he watched her all the time and never regarded her as a problem. He only knew that when the little girl with a smiling face called out “Brother” for the first time, he wanted to protect her!

Yu Zhiyi woke up at night, and Shi Yi, who was guarding her bed, noticed the movements first, and he rang the bell to call for doctors and nurses to come over for an examination, Yu Zhiyi slightly opened her eyes with a blank look…

When she heard Shi Yi’s voice, she leaned towards him, as he was the last straw to grab to save her life.

Yu Zhiyi shouted in terror as Yu Kai extended his hand.

Shi Yi tried to reassure her by patting her on the back, but it was ineffective. “Uncle, can I ask you to go out first?” He said it with a stern attitude as he gazed up at Yu Kai.

Everyone was aware of Yu Zhiyi’s avoidance strategy. Yu Kai regretted it as he watched his once-gentle and well-behaved daughter turn into this.

After that, Yu Kai didn’t dare show up in front of her, and Yu Zhiyi refused to eat some insipid meal that my aunt brought over. She claimed that she couldn’t eat it.

Everyone initially tried to wait for her to eat when she was hungry rather than forcing her to eat, but she didn’t appear to be hungry and didn’t open her mouth during the entire day.

Shi Yi placed the bowl of rice porridge in front of her mouth, but she continued to refuse to open her mouth. Instead, she silently turned her head. “Are you not hungry?”

She continued by saying, “I can’t eat it.”

Shi Yi had to coax her by saying, “Yiyi, eat a little, your brother is going to feed you.”

When the spoon approached her lips, Yu Zhiyi hesitantly opened her mouth to eat.

After exhaling a breath of relief, Shi Yi fed her the second mouthful. But Yu Zhiyi lay on the bed without eating.

Her little face was hot from choking, tears were streaming from the corners of her eyes, and she didn’t spit anything out. She was quite uncomfortable, and the cut on her face stung from this kind of motion.

She couldn’t eat it, and she wasn’t trying to play with her anger.

Others understood how frightened Yu Zhiyi was.

“The patient may be experiencing severe psychological issues,” the doctor said, based on the results of the most recent checkup.

She was injected with nutrient solutions since she lost her appetite due to the severe psychological stress and the discomfort of the injury.

Yu Kai needed to speak with the child’s mother since he was short on cash to pay the hospital bill.

Ruan Qing finally responded to Yu Zhiyi’s uncle’s call. “Brother, what’s the matter?”

The uncle said, a little forcefully, “You know how to answer the phone! Do you know that your daughter is dying?”

Ruan Qing was frightened. “Yiyi, Yiyi, is she okay? I’ll be back immediately.”

Grandma wanted to leave the hospital as soon as she learned about her granddaughter’s accident, but the doctor forbade her from doing so.

Ruan Qing consoled her mother by promising to inform her of the truth and that she would return right away to care for the child.

The elderly person sobbed quietly as she wiped away her tears, and she said, “My poor Yiyi…” ‘How could such a good kid have a father like that?’

Her uncle was nonetheless relieved when Ruan Qing hurried back, believing the child would always have affection for her mother.

However, when Yu Zhiyi saw her mother, she didn’t show any expression and looked at her like a stranger.

Ruan Qing was heartbroken. “Yiy… I’m your mother. Mother is back.” She tried to hug her daughter.

But Yu Zhiyi avoided Ruan Qing’s touch.

When she wanted their love and affection, they threw her away, and now she didn’t want it. She had lost her faith in her parents, as she now considered her an abandoned child.

When Nign Suya came to visit Yu Zhiyi, she heard two familiar voices in the hallway.

Ruan Qing: “She is your own daughter. How can you be so nasty to her? Do you know how many stitches she has had on her face? How painful! If…if the face that girls care about the most is gone, what do you want her to do in the future?”

It was hard for Yu Zhiyi to not care about her appearance because most females value beauty, yet when she first awoke, she largely refrained from speaking other than to respond to a few straightforward inquiries.

After speaking a few words, Ruan Qing sobbed once more before reaching out to push Yu Kai many times.

Yu Kai squatted on the ground while impatiently pulling his hair. “You… why do you only blame me? Isn’t she your daughter? Don’t think I don’t know that you have a good relationship with that surnamed Zhao long; you just look forward to taking Yanyan to remarry. Did you think about Yiyi?” Yu Kai angrily fought back. 

“What are you talking about? How can you say that about me? You made a foolish bet and lost the money. So what right do you have to blame me?”

Ning Suya sighed helplessly. ‘Their daughter was in the hospital, but rather than thinking about her, those two blamed each other? Poor Yiyi…They don’t know how to cherish a good girl.’

Yu Zhiyi’s uncles had paid for her surgery, and when Ruan Qing came, she settled the payment with the uncle. And she scolded Yu Kai even more because he was unable to pay his daughter’s medical bills.

It would take time to heal the injuries on Yu Zhiyi’s face, and she couldn’t be hospitalised for a long time because her family couldn’t afford high hospitalisation costs. So the adults discussed taking her home and arranging for someone to look after her.

Ning Suya: “If you take Yiyi home, who do you plan to let take care of her?”

Yu Zhiyi’s family exchanged looks with each other.

Yu Zhiyi’s aunt opened her mouth first. “We helped Yiyi be hospitalised and do other things. But now who has such free time?”

Hearing those words, Yu Kai shook his head helplessly and said, “Yiyi doesn’t want to see me at all now, how can I take care of her?”

Yu Zhiyi had an incredible fear for Yu Kai, and when she saw him, she was difficult to handle. 

“I really can’t separate myself from taking care of the three of them. Yanyan needs me to take care of her, and my mother also needs my care right now. It’s not that I don’t want to take care of my daughter.” Ruan Qing said. She felt bad for her daughter, but it was really difficult for her to allocate time for Yiyi.

Ning Suya, who had been listening silently, asked, “So each of you is not able to take care of Yiyi, right?”

“You are still elders, blood relatives.” Ning Suya laughed fiercely and mockingly while maintaining her usual composure. “Do you consider her as a fifteen-year-old child? Which teacher at school doesn’t praise her for being quiet and obedient? Which neighbour in the yard doesn’t praise her for being sensible? Now she has become a little shit between you adults! Seriously, I have no idea what you believe. I would never want my kid to experience any loss if she were this. You shouldn’t think that a child who is doing well without troubling you doesn’t require attention. Simply put, this type of child has the highest level of internal sensitivity. Don’t say it’s the child who’s sensible and helps with the work. I’d rather she be more coquettish and do nothing.”

This time, Ning Suya was quite impatient.

When an outsider was criticising family members, they couldn’t utter a single word. Precisely, they didn’t have the right because every word that came out of Ning Suya’s mouth was true.

When the conversation was going like that, a little girl was standing near the ward’s door and listening to it. Nobody saw Yu Zhiyi there. Then she silently closed the door and entered the bathroom.

At that time, no one was in the ward bathroom so Yu Zhiyi looked at her gauze-covered face in the mirror. 

‘It looks nasty. You look so horrible, Yu Zhiyi.’ 

‘I won’t be referred to as cute anymore.’

‘What good is being sensible or having the ability to work?’

She muttered as she peered in the mirror as if she could see her former self through it, “They all say you are cute and sensible…But they didn’t care about me at that time. Now that you are like this, you will be fully abandoned.”

Her mind became a mess while she was thinking negative thoughts. ‘Perhaps I didn’t deserve love because no one will definitely pick me. Really, I want to pass away. Then I will be set free by dying.’

The razor-sharp knife cut her skin, yet she felt no pain. She sensed that she might actually be dying, and even the pain seemed to disappear.

“Yiyi, are you using the toilet?”

“Yiyi, are you there?”

Yu Zhiyi was unable to close her eyes due to the knocking sound of the door.

“Yu Zhiyi! Are you inside? If you hear me, respond to me.”

A very familiar voice that seemed to be rushing and continuously yelling her name could be heard.

Yu Zhiyi jerked her eyes wide and said, “Brother…”

With a “bang,” the door was forcefully opened.

Seeing the scene inside, Shi Yi screamed in fear. “Yiyi…Yiyi…!” He brought the little girl back to the hospital bed and urgently rang the bell to call the doctor while the adults who came behind him blocked the door.

Fortunately, it was discovered quickly, the injury was not severe, and the doctor said that she was not in danger.

There was a collective sigh of relief.

Outside the ward.

Shi Yi stared at the group of unreliable grownups. “What just happened?” he asked. “What did you say to her?” He just left the ward to eat, and when he came back such a horrible thing happened. 

The group of adults shook their heads.

“I only noticed that small girl standing at the door for a bit, then she went to the toilet,” the aunt in the bed came out and said.

All understood what had happened.

“Had she heard us discussing who would take care of her?” Yu Zhiyi’s aunt muttered.

After learning what Yiyi’s family had discussed, Shi Yi had a private conversation with his mother. “Mom, do you know that when I saw Yiyi lying lifeless on the hospital bed, I even thought about calling the police? But I didn’t do that. I’m not sure if she could handle losing her father after losing her mother.”

He truly revealed his intention after expressing his feelings towards those two harsh parents, saying, “Mom, I want to take Yiyi home.”

Ning Suya: “Xiao Yi, this time things are not as simple as usual…” she said.

“Mom, I know that choosing someone will involve a lot of responsibility, but if I give her up now out of fear, it will be something I regret for the rest of my life,” he said.

Ning Suya: “You are only in your teens!” ‘How can you talk about your entire life when you are so young.’

“Mom, you saw what happened today. Who can guarantee what will happen to her if she goes with her father? Mom…I want to protect her.” Shi Yi nonetheless pleaded boldly and firmly with his mother. “Mom, please promise, to let me take her home.”

To prevent her son from seeing her cry, Ning Suya covered her mouth and turned her face away.

She replied with a sniff and a deep voice, “Go and talk to the Yu family; as long as they agree, we will take her home.” In Ning Suya’s heart, Yiyi was like her own daughter. So how could she look away when Yu Zhiyi wanted them the most?

With a nod, Shi Yi murmured, “Thank you, Mom.”

He thought that the Yu family wanted someone to handle what they considered to be a problem, so he didn’t worry too much about them.

Nevertheless, Shi Yi was able to speak with Yu Kai and Ruan Qing. After making his choice, he didn’t say much more. “You have dozens of reasons for not paying attention to her. She only wants your love.”

A child who had experienced abuse by her parents wouldn’t stop loving them; instead, she would continue to doubt herself and eventually give up.

When they learned this, the two felt humiliated. They were not as lucid as teenagers after living for decades.

Shi Yi returned to the hospital bed and watched over Yu Zhiyi the entire night.

“I don’t have selfless kindness, but with you, I want to be a good person,” he said. “The Buddha had said that if you are kind to others and seek rewards, your kindness will be tarnished.”

This revelation left Ning Suya, who was hidden behind the curtain, feeling incredibly sad. She still remembered Shi Yi’s remark that “A sensitive child will question everyone’s love once he or she is abandoned.” And now Yu Zhiyi was thinking that way.
