Chapter 37.1

The relationship between Yu Zhiyi and Shi Yi changed a bit after Qiao Lezhi’s birthday.

Yu Zhiyi wondered whether Shi Yi had a crush on her, but Shi Yi never said that, and in the end, she was too scared to ask.

As the college entrance examination was approaching, the high school seniors focused on their studies more.

Yu Zhiyi’s mother, Ruan Qing, came to Yu Zhiyi’s school to meet her daughter half a month before the college entrance examination, and Yu Zhiyi was a bit surprised when she found out that her mother was looking for her.

When Ruan Qing arrived, it was time for lunch. Yu Zhiyi walked to the teaching building with her and found a quiet place to sit where there were hardly any people.

Ruan Qing wanted to hold the child’s hand, but Yu Zhiyi quickly moved her hands away and looked as if she was in a trace.

Seeing that, Ruan Qing looked a little uncomfortable, but she quickly arranged her feelings, smiled, and said, “Mom took two days of vacation to come to see you.”

Yu Zhiyi looked down and calmly said, “Thank you.”

Ruan Qing was absent from her elder daughter’s life, and she didn’t know how to make things right with her daughter. She always thought her elder daughter was well-behaved and responsible and that she could take care of herself and have a good life without her.

And she realised that now Yu Zhiyi didn’t need her anymore, and she couldn’t take care of her child. Ruan Qing quietly sighed and said, “Have you been studying a lot? You look thin and tired.”

Yu Zhiyi: “…”

Since high school, YuZhiyi has looked slim, and she hasn’t paid extra attention to her body. “I feel good; I have enough to eat, and I’m wearing cosy clothes. I can live well even without my parents.”

This lukewarm tone made Ruan Qing worried. She looked sad and said, “Yiyi, why won’t you forgive mom? I really want to be nice to you.”

Yu Zhiyi heard the same words over and over again,  it gave her a headache, and this time she could not stay calm anymore and asked, “You keep asking me why I won’t forgive you. Are you really caring about me, or are you just doing this to make yourself feel better?”

Ruan Qing was surprised by her well-behaved daughter’s words and raised her voice. “Yiyi! Why would you say that to me? I am your mother. I always treat you with sincerity.”

Yu Zhiyi closed her eyes to control her feelings, and when she opened them again, her eyes were a little darker than before. “I don’t know what the standard is for treating people sincerely in your eyes, but I want to tell you, even Aunt Ning, has never asked me to do anything. But you are hoping for my forgiveness. Logically speaking, you are the one who should be responsible for me, but since you have chosen to be responsible for your other daughter, I won’t fight or grab it, but you can’t ask me to be the same as your other daughter.”

Ruan Qing was a little anxious. “You and Yanyan are both my daughters, and I love both of you.”

When Yu Zhiyi heard this, she laughed softly and felt a little helpless. “Apart from the blood relationship, what do you care about me? Ask yourself. And do you think that everything would be alright when you brought me undesirable gifts?“ The little girl sighed. “If you insist on forcing me to answer, I might as well tell you. I used to like those things because I thought I liked my parents, but I don’t like them now. You can’t force me to like them anymore!”

This was probably the most serious thing Yu Zhiyi had ever said to her parents in so many years.

The surrounding air seemed to freeze for a moment.

Ruan Qing was shaking inside after hearing her daughter’s words. “You should have told your mom these words earlier. If you had told your Mom sooner, then Mom would…Mom would…”

Yu Zhiyi nodded and said, “If I had told you sooner, would you choose me over Yanyan? Or could you take both of us with you?” She let out a choking sound. “But… it was the best way. After facing those things, I have realised that there is someone for me even if we are not related by blood.”

“Yiyi, your mother didn’t leave you, I promise.” Ruan Qing said it with strong feelings.

Suddenly, her phone rang, and her husband’s name was displayed on it. Ruan Qing looked at her daughter and picked up the phone call. “What Yanyan got hurt? Alright, I’ll come back soon.” Ruan Qing sounded really worried about Yanyan.

Yu Zhiyi was quiet as she watched her mother answer her phone. After Ruan Qing hung up the phone, Yu Zhiyi finally asked the question that had been bothering her for a long time. “I have always been unsure about something. Yanyan and I are both daughters, and there is no such thing as favouring boys over girls. To put it another way, why were you unwilling to take me with you when you left, but you were willing to have another daughter outside and take her with you?”

Sometimes she thought that her parents preferred boys over girls, and even though she knew they wanted a son, she still wished she was the gender they preferred.

Both of them were girls, so the difference was more noticeable and painful.

“Later, I realised that all love is divided into depths and thicknesses.”

Ruan Qing couldn’t talk and was speechless.

They left their elder daughter in their hometown because they didn’t know what was happening outside. Afterwards, they left for a few years and had another baby. Yu Kai wanted a boy, so she had a baby thinking it would be a boy, but in the end, that child was also a girl.

At that time, everything was calm, so they were able to keep their little daughter next to them without worrying.

But they forgot that their elder daughter was very young. She was a kid who wanted to be with her parents and hoped for their love. Therefore, it was too late to tell those things now because it would only make Yu Zhiyi remember that her parents never chose her.

The mother and daughter’s meeting didn’t end well.
