Chapter 58.1 – Tingyu x Luobai 4

After meeting Shen Luobai again at the hospital after several years, Wen Tingyu was unable to focus on him because of her father’s surgery. Now that the surgery was successful and her father was out of danger, Wen Tingyu was determined to win the man.

Although she didn’t even know Shen Luobai’s home address…

After requesting those pictures from Jiang Mier and saving them in her phone’s album, Wen Tingyu hung out with her friend for a bit before bidding Jiang Mier farewell.

She watched the red light opposite her end count down as she stood at the junction. When the green light came on, she crossed the street, turned, and took a few steps forward before coming to a stop.

She dialed the number she knew by heart. She hadn’t dialed that number for some years, so she was not sure whether it was still his number.

After a few seconds…

“Hello?”

With just one word, Wen Tingyu was able to confirm the man’s identity.

“Where are you now?” she asked directly.

After a few seconds of silence, Shen Luobai’s voice came over the phone. “What’s the matter?”

Wen Tingyu: “I want to come to see you.”

After a moment of apparent shock, the person on the other end of the phone asked, “Wen Tingyu, are you free?”

“I’m quite busy, but…” She changed her tone, her voice more cheerful than before. She said, “I suddenly found a coward and wanted to catch him.”

“Hearing the words…”

“Well, I’m listening. Why don’t you just tell me where you are?”

“I have something to do.” He still used those simple words to stop her.

With her head down, Wen Tingyu examined her shoes.

The other person did not end the call while she remained silent.

She was a sensitive person who liked to pay attention to small details and realised the other person never hung up on her. After a while, she sighed into the phone and said helplessly, “Okay, I won’t bother you anymore. Bye.”

Naturally, Shen Luobai heard her low voice, which made him feel like her heart was scratched with a broken glass.

He opened his lips slightly, but before he could say anything, he heard a cough.

Shen Luobai glanced away and tightened his grip on the phone. The last word he heard from the other side of the phone was “Goodbye.”

Wen Tingyu waited at the street corner after the call ended, gazing at the phone screen until the screen went black. She shielded her eyes with her hands and gazed up at the sky.

The weather was hot and humid in the summer afternoon. Sometimes sunny and sometimes dark, as if it were going to rain.

“Ahem—”

The coughing sound made people feel uncomfortable.

After putting his phone away, Shen Luobai grabbed the water bottle from the bedside table and left.

There was a huge water heater in the corner of the corridor. Shen Luobai took half a pot of boiling water and returned to the room, then took a clean cup and poured a small half cup, and let the hot water cool a bit.

He opened the drawer with skillful movements. Various medicines were placed inside, and he could accurately get what he needed.

Following all of this, he took out a stool and sat near the head of the bed, silently gazing at the woman on the bed.

The middle-aged woman leaning at the head of the bed was muttering something that no one could clearly understand, and her eyes were lifeless.

Shen Luobai merely silently gazed at her. Everything appeared so bleak in this small rental house.

After a while, he extended his hand and used his fingers to test the water’s temperature against the cup’s wall. Then, he handed over all of the medication he had just sorted out and said, “Take the medicine.”

The thing was close to her mouth, but the woman shook her head repeatedly. “I don’t want to eat it; throw it away! It’s poison!”

Taking a deep breath, Shen Luobai calmly held the medicine and water before saying to the woman, “Mom, take these things, and I will take you out.”

The woman continued to shake her head. She inadvertently knocked over the water cup when she abruptly lifted the thin blanket on the bed.

The bed got soaked by the warm water.

Shen Luobai simply felt pain in her heart, as though a massive rock were choking him.

He stood up without saying a word, put the medicine back down, and replaced the glass of water.

Qiu Huiyi was ill again.

Ever since he could remember, he had always heard gossip from his neighbours.

His father was an honest farmer who worked hard to earn his living. He finally wed a stunning woman. However, others congratulated him with a joking tone, saying although the woman had some defects, he married her because of her beauty.

But his father didn’t care about those words; he worked hard to take care of his wife and his son.

He encouraged his son to study hard.

Shen Luobai always remembered what his father told him, “Our family is poor; you must study hard and get out of this small place.”

Otherwise, without an education, the suffering would only continue in this small place in an endless cycle.

Therefore, no matter what happened, Shen Luobai seized every opportunity to ensure that he could go to school normally.

Qiu Huiyi had been in quite decent physical shape during the last few years. She had no issues in her day-to-day life, notwithstanding her occasional oddness.

However, Qiu Huiyi’s condition got worse during the last two years.

When he had an attack, she wouldn’t listen to anything, just like what happened just now. She was completely uncooperative.

Because of this, Shen Luobai rented a small house near the hospital with the money he earned from his part-time job. Although the environment there was not very good, it was convenient.

Since he started his internship at the hospital, his free time has gotten reduced.

To keep Qiu Huiyi from running out while he was at work, he could only switch on the room’s surveillance and shut the door from the outside. He also had to keep an eye on her constantly to see if anything unusual occurred.

He returned to the rental house to take care of Qiu Huiyi after leaving work. Even though she was awake most of the time, they were unable to converse as a mother and son would normally.

Shen Luobai’s life was simple. He studied, worked to earn money, and took care of his mother.
