Cherish You as My Life - Chapter 5

Chapter 5
Han Xi was still inside the interrogation room.
Shortly after, Ji Yao came in and said, “Congratulations to this pretty lady; your problem has been resolved.”
Han Xi looked at him indifferently and said, “Oh.” Then she left the room without giving Ji Yao another glance.
When Han Xi walked past Ji Yao, he noticed that she didn’t have a smell coated with perfume or the disinfectant used by other forensic doctors, and the only thing he could smell was a slight smell of lemon.
Han Xi went back to the forensic office, cleaned her hands well, and wore her forensic uniform.
Documents from Xiao Yu’s case were on her desk, and she always felt that Zhou Tong, who died by being killed like a fish, was connected to Xiao Yu’s jumping case.
Han Xi looked through both cases to find a link, but she couldn’t do it. ‘The two dead people didn’t know each other and were not connected at all. They only had in common that they both lived in Li Zhuyuan.’
Han Xi still couldn’t believe that a friendly person like Xiao Yu would do something as serious as commit suicide. However, the autopsy report clearly showed that Xiao Yu did jump off a building and took her own life. ‘Every person is complicated. They act differently around others than they are inside. Maybe Xiao Yu had a hidden side that nobody knew about.’
Han Xi felt a bit sleepy and decided to take a quick nap on the table. Then she realised she hadn’t eaten lunch yet, so she grabbed a chocolate bar from the drawer. Just as she was going to unwrap it, she got a call from the City Bureau’s Security Office saying they had food for her and were asking her to come and get it.
Han Xi was shocked because she didn’t order food.
When the guard, Lao Liu, saw Han Xi, he gave her a big bag of food, smiled, and said, “Our Team Captain Ji looks playful, but he is kind and thoughtful of people.”
Han Xi took the food without a smile. It was really heavy because of the fancy box that had the name of a fancy restaurant printed on it. She searched but couldn’t find any messages, so she asked, “How do you know Captain Ji ordered it?”
Lao Liu: “Who would order food from such a fancy restaurant except our Captain Ji?”
Han Xi smiled and said, “Sure, thank you, Uncle Liu.”
Lao Liu raised his hand and said, “It’s already two in the afternoon; why haven’t you eaten yet? Your work is important, but so is your health, young lady.”
Han Xi said, “Okay, I’ll remember that for next time.” Then she turned around and went into the City Bureau building.
She felt a little confused and lost when she met unfamiliar people.
In this world, there were kind people, and so were the opposite. Every day, she thought about wanting a better life, but when she remembered the sad things that happened in the past, negative emotions surrounded her heart.
Han Xi asked her assistant Zhu Han to have a meal with her and then asked her for Ji Yao’s WeChat ID.
Ji Yao was sitting in front of a TV screen outside the questioning room, with a half-empty bottle of banana milk on the table.
Zhao Jingjing and Zhou Li were questioning Zhou Lin, the son of the person who passed away.
During the break, he quickly looked at his phone and saw that he had gotten a new friend request on WeChat. The other person’s name was Han Xi.
He was concerned about how to get her WeChat ID, but he got it without any trouble.
Zhao Jingjing looked at Ji Yao and said, “Captain, your smile can blind us.”
Ji Yao shook his phone and seemed a little lost. “Look at this woman; everyone is trying to talk to her on WeChat. I really can’t stand being bothered by her. Women are so difficult,” he said and then showed the phone screen to Zhao Jingjing, making sure he could see it.
Zhao Jingjing said without showing any emotion, “A message has arrived.”
Ji Yao saw that the other person sent the money first. “Thanks for the food, but please don’t do it again.” Then, this message came.
When Ji Yao tried to reply, he realised that the other person had blocked him.
Zhao Jingjing tapped Ji Yao’s shoulder and tried not to laugh. “Your Majesty, she really doesn’t like to be interrupted.” But then he couldn’t help it and ended up laughing with Zhou Li.
Ji Yao stared at the message he couldn’t send, and he felt it was a slap on his face.
********
Thirty minutes later.
The suspect, Zhou Lin, was sitting on a chair; his expression looked a little tired and mixed with anger. He occasionally wiped his tears with his hands to express his feelings for his dead father.
“I told you that I wasn’t the one who killed him. Why don’t you catch the murderer and give my father justice? You are wasting your time here.”
So far, the interrogation had lasted for two hours, and he kept repeating these two sentences over and over again without revealing anything.
Ji Yao opened the door and came in, threw a cigarette at Zhou Lin, leaned over, and lit it for him.
The police officer who was questioning the suspect, stood up. “Captain Ji.”
Ji Yao nodded and said, “Okay, you can go out first.” After speaking, he picked up the interrogation record on the table and looked at it.
After the suspect finished smoking the cigarette, Ji Yao asked, “One more?” His attitude seemed casual, but his eyes were like sharp swords, not missing any subtle expressions or body movements of the suspect.
Zhou Lin said it tiredly, “No need.”
Ji Yao sat down and pushed the cigarette case and lighter towards Zhou Lin. “Okay, do whatever you want.” After that, he went out.
Ji Yao came out and said to the person in charge of guarding, “Let him be there for two hours without giving him water.”
Two hours later, Ji Yao entered the interrogation room again and saw that Zhou Lin’s mental state was obviously worse than before. He had finished smoking all the cigarettes on the table; the cigarette butts were thrown on the floor, and his throat was dry and astringent.
Ji Yao sat and said, “Sorry, I was busy earlier.” Then he gave the suspect a glass of water, like a hero saving a miserable person.
Zhou Lin drank the big glass of water really fast, taking just two big sips.
Ji Yao: “After the old man dies, the house will be yours. Are you planning to sell or rent it later?”
The suspect let his guard down and quickly said, “Sell it.” Then he realised he was in an interrogation room and wished he hadn’t said anything.
Ji Yao said without seeming to notice, “Oh, my family works in real estate. I will assist you in making an estimate. The house can be sold for at least two million dollars.”
Zhou Lin didn’t say anything, but his eyes looked greedy. He was also sad, but his greed was still clear.
Ji Yao: “I really feel sorry for your father. What would happen if he heard your words just now?”
Zhou Lin got really angry and upset when he heard those words, and he exploded with emotion like a wounded animal. He lifted his hand and hit the table hard, then he yelled, “I did not kill him.” Then he looked down and said again, “We argued last night. I did not succeed in business, and I owed over one million yuan to people who lend money at very high-interest rates. If I don’t give the money back, I will be in serious trouble. He said no to helping me and no to selling the house. He just wanted to see me die.”
Ji Yao: “Where were you from eight-thirty to nine o’clock last night? And your alibi for that time is in the next room, and he is being questioned for stealing a car.”
Zhou Lin was very surprised because he didn’t think it was possible to be caught so quickly.
Ji Yao smiled slightly and asked, “How did you know that he took the car?”
Zhou Lin decided not to say anything after opening his mouth.
Seeing the emotional changes on the suspect’s face, Ji Yao smiled and said, “I want to tell you that the man left his ID card in another person’s parking space.”
Zhou Lin was shocked and couldn’t believe that there could be such a dumb thief in the world.
Ji Yao said, “It’s true.” Then he changed the topic and said, “Your friend has already admitted that you helped him. So which one would you pick: killing someone or stealing?”
Zhou Lin looked worried and said, “I didn’t hurt anyone, and I didn’t steal a car. Why should I confess to something I didn’t do? The police are trying to trick me.”
Ji Yao was not surprised by such words because he had heard tough talk even when death was near. At that time, Zhao Jingjing came in and whispered something to Ji Yao.
Ji Yao glanced at Zhou Lin and grinned. He was tricked by him. The dumb thief already admitted that Zhou Lin helped him steal cars. He looked at Zhou Lin, then turned to the young police officer and said, “For now, handle him and help the second team with their work.”
Ji Yao stopped at the door of the interrogation room and turned to Zhou Lin. “Your father made the last phone call of his life at 7:40 last night, just after you left. He had told a company that sells houses that he wanted to sell his house to save his son’s life.”
Zhou Lin sat quietly on the chair feeling confused, then started to shout and cry.
It didn’t matter how the father and son got along while the father was alive, but in the end, the son ended up without a father in this world.
Ji Yao went back to the office and sat on the chair, feeling very weak. He had a bottle of banana milk in his mouth to help him feel better.
‘We can’t find any clues here.’ Ji Yao thought they might have been looking in the wrong direction during their investigation.
‘What do Zhou Tong, fish soup, and anatomy have in common?
‘Maybe we had already seen the tricky killer during an investigation, or maybe he never showed up at all.
‘No matter who does it, when someone commits a crime, they will always leave clues.
No crime is perfect in this world.’
Ji Yao decided to go back to the crime scene because it was time to leave work.
‘Oh, I can also take the beauty home.’
Ji Yao went to the forensic room door, knocked, and then poked his head in with a friendly smile. Then he asked if he could take the person home because the weather was nice.
Han Xi turned and looked back. Zhu Han had gone, so she was the last person in the forensic lab, so she knew that he was asking her.
“No, thanks,” Han Xi said. Then she looked up at him and asked, “Aren’t you supposed to go on a blind date today?”
It was just her second day at work, and she had to listen to the Captain’s sad love story.
People talk about this famous person wherever there are people, including in the pathology department and the departments nearby.
Ji Yao seemed confused. He didn’t understand why he was supposed to go on a blind date because he wasn’t informed earlier.
