Cherish You as My Life - Chapter 7

Chapter 7
Before Ji Yao took a taxi, he ran into a person who was wearing a security uniform and holding an old black umbrella at the entrance of the community.
At that time, a strong gust of wind made the whole umbrella flip over, making the security guard scared and wobbly, and he almost fell off the side of the road.
Ji Yao saw that the man was the security guard of the community. He went near him and asked, “Do you need help?” He also added, “Don’t worry, I’m a policeman who just came in to handle the case.”
Xiao Zhou saw Ji Yao and waved his hand, saying, “No, thanks; I’m going to take a taxi.”
Ji Yao said, “It’s hard to find a taxi because it’s raining. I have booked one; let’s go together.”
Xiao Zhou looked at his watch and told Ji Yao, “I’m going to the Sixth Hospital. When I reach , I will give you money for the taxi ride.”
Ji Yao smiled and didn’t say anything, and when the taxi arrived, both of them got in the taxi.
Xiao Zhou had dropped out of school because of money problems and was now working as a security guard.
After sitting on the seat, he moved back uncomfortably, holding the broken umbrella, because he was afraid he was causing trouble for Ji Yao.
Ji Yao smiled seeing Xiao Zhou’s behaviour because he realised this child was very innocent. He had been working on cases for over five years and had met a lot of really bad criminals. So, he really valued and loved even the tiniest acts of innocence and kindness in the world.
Xiao Zhou took out his phone when he almost reached the hospital entrance and said to the officer, “I came out quickly and forgot to bring any money. Can I pay you using Alipay or WeChat?”
Ji Yao was surprised at first, but then he understood. He wanted to pay for the ride.
He smiled and said, “No, I just came to this hospital to visit someone.”
Zhao Jingjing’s grandma was also in the hospital, so Ji Yao thought of visiting her.
Xiao Zhou wanted to give money because he never took advantage of others.
Realising that Ji Yao asked, “Do you know Miss Han from number 10? Can you help her when she needs help?”
“Do you need my help? Are you Miss Han’s boyfriend?” Xiao Zhou asked without replying to Ji Yao’s question.
Hearing Xiao Zhou’s question, Ji Yao was thinking about whether to tell the truth or not. But no matter how bold he was, he couldn’t tell he was Han Xi’s boyfriend. Pondering for a moment, he said, “OK, I didn’t say anything; this is what you said.”
He didn’t nod or shake his head, and his lips curled up and his eyes sparkled with cleverness.
Both of them went to the hospital and went to the emergency room.
*******
Ji Yao called Zhao Jingjing to ask about his grandma.
Zhao Jingjing said, “She is alright. The doctor has put on a bandage and told her to stay in bed for two months.”
Ji Yao: “Which room are you in? I’m in the emergency room.”
Zhao Jingjing: “There is no hospital room available. You go through the emergency room. There are many rooms behind the emergency room. We are in the row of seats near those rooms.”
It was not possible to live in a room or bed in a ward in the city’s public hospitals.
Ji Yao found them and went to the grandma, who had a cast and pyjamas on. He squatted down, took the old woman’s hand, and said, “Why did you fall, sister? I feel so bad for you. “
Zhao Jingjing’s family was familiar with Ji Yao, and they all liked him because he would speak sweetly.
The old woman started laughing when she heard someone call her “sister” and when she smiled, you could see her cute half-missing teeth in two rows.
Ji Yao got up and told Zhao Jingjing, “It’s raining hard out there. Our grandma’s legs are not working well. Be careful not to ruin the plaster. Let her stay in the hospital today.”
Zhao Jingjing: “The doctor said there are no more beds available in the hospital ward.”
Usually, hospital rooms were either occupied or they were saved for people who needed them more. They could get a special room, but it was very expensive.
Ji Yao made a quick phone call and then told his deputy to wait there because someone would come to get them soon. “Don’t be upset about the money.” Then, he looked at Grandma again and said, “We can’t let this nice lady suffer. This is really wrong, so let’s stay in a nice room, okay?”
Zhao Jingjing: “This is really shameful and not right.”
Ji Yao: “This is for a respectable and lovely lady. Do you think I’m doing this for you? You have no shame.”
After Ji Yao made sure Grandma was comfortable, he left the hospital room and asked Zhao Jingjing, “Why are you still wearing a police uniform in the hospital? How can you scare people here?”
Zhao Jingjing: “We planned to go to Li Zhuyuan after work to work on the case together, and I didn’t have time to change into casual clothes.” Then he looked at Ji Yao and commented on his white shirt.
Ji Yao replied that there was nothing wrong with it. “The hero is wearing a white shirt. Isn’t it normal? You guys who aren’t the main actors won’t get it.” After he said that, he got to the elevator and said, “Jingjing, you don’t have to see me off. Go back.”
Before Zhao Jingjing could say his famous line, Ji Yao had already entered the elevator.
******
Ji Yao saw Xiao Zhou sitting outside the emergency room, holding his head in his arms.
He went over to Xiao Zhou, helped him up, and brought him to sit on the seat next to him.
“What’s the matter?”
“My mother’s kidneys have not been working for six months. We found a kidney a long time ago, but the operation still costs a lot of money,” Xiao Zhou said with a sad smile and didn’t say anything else. He then looked at Ji Yao and said, “Thank you. You are a good person, like Miss Han and Sister Yu. You are all good people.”
Ji Yao thought of Han Xi, who always looked unfriendly and didn’t show much love and kindness. ‘How can a small security guard feel good about that kind of person?’ He asked, “How did Miss Han, uh, Xiaoxi, help you?”
When he heard the word “Xiaoxi” come out of his mouth, he felt a little shy but also a little happy. He hadn’t been in love yet, but he had already felt what love was like.
Xiao Zhou didn’t see that the police officer was acting strange. He answered, “Ms. Han may seem unfriendly, but she is actually very nice. She helped me find my mother’s doctor, who is the top kidney doctor at the Sixth Hospital and a very knowledgeable expert.”
Ji Yao had felt before that even though Han Xi wasn’t good at making friends, she was a kind-hearted person. Ji Yao smiled as if he was happy to hear the praise. “Who is the person named Sister Yu that you mentioned?”
A heavy sadness flashed across the young security guard’s face: “Sister Yu is gone. She left last Wednesday.”
Ji Yao frowned. “Is she Xiao Yu?”
Xiao Zhou nodded his head and then remembered that the police officer in front of him had been at the place when Xiao Yu jumped off the building.
Ji Yao thought about the woman who killed herself by jumping off a building. He asked, “Can you tell me about Sister Yu?”
Xiao Zhou: “Sister Yu didn’t live in Li Zhuyuan before. After she married Sun Xunhai last year, she came here. Sister Yu usually likes to bake, and she often makes some cookies and desserts and sends them to the security room for us. She also suggested that I apply to an adult education university and get a high-paying job in the future. After my mother fell ill, Sister Yu often visited her, and she even gave her money several times.” He was silent for a moment, then raised his head and said, “Officer, tell me, why would such a good person die?”
Ji Yao was caught off guard by the security guard’s words. ‘He called Han Xi “Miss Han”, Xiao Yu “Sister Yu”, and Sun Xunhai by his full name.’
“How did the husband and wife get along with each other?”
Xiao Zhou was very angry and said, “Sun Xunhai is a bad person. He frequently hits Sister Yu. Many times, neighbours told me about it, and I quickly went to check it out. He also said bad things about us. Who doesn’t know that he is the one taking care of the other woman?
This Sun Xunhai was a scumbag, and Ji Yao had seen it for a long time.
“Can you tell me where you were between 8:30 and 9:00 last night?”
Xiao Zhou said, “I worked during the day yesterday and went home after I finished work.” He then looked at Ji Yao with a frown and asked, “Officer, do you need to talk about Uncle Zhou’s murder? I have proof that I was somewhere else at the time of the crime. I ate dinner and then went to the drugstore. The staff there can justify me.”
‘Really, it seems you have watched too many criminal investigation movies, so it saves me the trouble of asking again.’ “Sister Yu and Uncle Zhou, do they know each other?”
Xiao Zhou thought carefully and said, “Maybe not. I have never seen them talk or do anything together. They are different types of people. Sister Yu is really kind, but Uncle Zhou is just not very pleasant.”
There was no intersection. Maybe he was overthinking it. The occurrence of these two cases was purely accidental. Ji Yao stood up and said, “I’m going back first. If you need anything, please call me.” After that, he gave him his phone number.
Xiao Zhou: “Thanks for today. Please be careful on the way; it’s raining a lot.”
Ji Yao agreed, then turned and went to the door.
Then he heard Xiao Zhou’s voice behind him. “Officer, I hope you and Miss Han have a happy life.” He was only two steps away.
He stopped, paused, turned back, and gave Xiao Zhou another phone number, which was a landline. “Call this number tomorrow and tell her your problem. Don’t refuse because you are afraid of causing trouble for others. Rich people’s money will not be used to the point of being considered wasted.”
Xiao Zhou didn’t know why, but Ji Yao had already left before he could figure it out.
Ji Yao then called the secretary of Ji’s group and reported the problem.
As soon as he arrived home, his mother called him.
“Secretary Li told me that you want to assist a patient with kidney failure.”
The Ji family was in charge of the Yaoguang Charitable Foundation, and the president was Ms. Su Yao, Ji Yao’s mother.
Su Yao always had a headache about her son, who was the only one who would inherit their family’s business. She was still mad at him for being a police officer for five years.
“Ms. Su, you seemed tired. Have you taken a break?”
Su Yao: “Stop tricking people with your kind words. Tell me, is the iron tree about to bloom? There may be someone in your heart. Who is it? Male or female, how old?”
Ji Yao: “I also said, if it’s possible, it’s possible. I haven’t even mentioned these words yet.”
Su Yao: “Okay, the president will not approve the amount of money you want.” After saying that, she was about to hang up the phone.
Ji Yao said quickly, “Please wait, she is one of my co-workers. I will keep you updated on any progress.”
Su Yao: “Do I know that person?”
Ji Yao said, “You haven’t seen her. Please don’t come here and scare people, alright?”
Su Yao was silent for a moment. “When you detectives are busy, you can’t even take care of food. It’s annoying for your mother to care about you. Son, your mother doesn’t have to force you to do it. When you get married and have an heir, hope that there will be someone around you to take care of each other and support each other. Do you understand?”
Ji Yao was moved. “Mom, don’t worry. I will take good care of myself.”
Su Yao: “So, can your dad and I have a grandson or granddaughter next year?”
Ji Yao: “…”
