I Gave Birth to a Cub without Telling the Head Assistant - Chapter 26

Chapter 26
“Brother Chu Lin, there’s a wolf! I’m terrified!”
The man’s anger faded away as the woman fell into his embrace.
The woman held the man’s waist tightly with her uninjured right arm; maybe she was actually afraid. Her soft body fit against him perfectly.
Li Zhulin felt the woman’s curves clearly and momentarily froze.
His hand, raised to strike, hesitated in the air before gently resting on her back.
“Xiangguo Temple is hidden in the deep mountains, high up in the clouds. It’s normal to encounter some wild animals here. They draw energy from the sun and moon and have a bit of human-like behaviour. They usually don’t dare to approach the temple, so you don’t need to be so frightened,” he muttered as he caressed her slender back.
Just then, another wolf howled in the distance!
With that, the woman turned pale with fear, tightening her grip around his waist. “I might not dare to enter the temple, but that doesn’t mean I wouldn’t! If a wild wolf really comes into the room, how can someone as weak as me defend against it?”
She looked up at him with her eyes brimming with tears and desperation. “Brother Chulin, you’re so strong and can definitely protect me. Can I stay with you tonight?”
In fact, she was not telling a lie. She was actually scared. If she were dealing with a person, Ruan Longling could handle it with her sharp wit. But facing a fierce beast? How could she escape its claws and teeth?
She had always been careful. Even when travelling to make purchases, she’d hire a strong bodyguard or bring along a group of servants to keep her safe.
And now how could she spend the night alone in a temple deep in the mountains with beasts howling around it?
In a flurry of nerves, mixing fear with a hint of seduction, she quietly slipped into the place where Li Zhulin was staying late at night.
Her arms wrapped around his waist gently, enough to make him feel a bit breathless. The moonlight illuminated her silk nightgown, shimmering with vibrant colours, paired with a delicate cloak edged in silver-white velvet.
When she looked up, her eyes sparkled with beauty and charm, as if she were a spirit trying to enchant him in the dark.
Even a devoted monk might find it hard to resist such a sight.
Li Zhulin paused, and his gaze drifted to the stack of Buddhist script on the table. He didn’t say much, just stiffly remarked, “In the presence of green lamps and ancient Buddhas, it’s against the rules for a man and a woman to be alone together in the temple.”
“Buddha is compassionate. He wouldn’t want to see a believer so scared and vulnerable over something so trivial!” Ruan Longling replied, shaking her head anxiously, with tears brimming in her eyes.
She truly didn’t want to return to her room feeling defeated. She knew she would definitely be unable to sleep while the wolves howled nearby. But hearing his rejection made her grip around his waist loosen slightly.
As she stepped back, her eyes filled with disappointment. She pressed her lips together, saying with a hint of sadness, “Forget it; Brother Chulin is a gentleman, and Longling will be a lady who respects the rules!”
The sweet scent that had filled Li Zhulin’s heart faded away, leaving only the traces of her tears on his collar.
‘Respecting the rules?
A lady?
Among those words, only the term “female” seemed to fit her at all.’
“It’s all good. Since I can’t stick around here, I’ll head to the main hall, kneel on the cushion, light some candles and incense, and just sit quietly with the night watchman for a while. That should help me feel a bit more at ease.”
After saying that, she lowered her head. Her delicate eyelashes fluttered, and tears were just about to spill over. But right before they slid over her face, she turned with determination and started to walk out the door…
Just then, a clear voice called out from behind her.
“Why wake the monk who’s trying to rest in the middle of the night? … Just stay here.”
‘Hah… I knew he’d say that!’
As Ruan Longling looked up, the spark of understanding in her eyes quickly faded. When she turned back, all that was left was gratitude. “Brother Chulin, I promise I’ll be good and won’t disturb you!”
The room in the temple was quite simple. Besides the desk, chair, and stool in the middle, there were just some Buddhist scripts and statues piled up by the window, along with a not-so-big mahogany bed frame in the southeast corner.
‘Sharing a room means sharing a bed!
Wolves howling alone in the night; a woman, filled with worry and fear, seeks comfort from a man…
But if I take the initiative to climb onto the bed, it would seem a little too unrestrained and would make people look down on me.’
So Ruan Longling just stood there, looking at a loss, and said timidly in a low voice, ”…Brother Chulin, you go back to the bed and have a rest first. As for me… I will just sleep on the desk for the night…”
Upon hearing the woman’s words, the man felt amused.
‘When you decided to stay here, didn’t you expect that the two of us would sleep in the same bed?
At this time, she started to act stupid.
It’s cute that she says one thing and means another.
That’s all.
If she wants to act, I’ll let her act.’
Li Zhulin strolled around her and lifted his hand to shut the two wide-open wooden doors, shutting out the chill and gloom of the spring night. It felt like the entire world had gone mute, so quiet that only the heartbeats of the two people in the room could be heard.
He turned to face Ruan Longling, and with his slender fingers, he slowly loosened the ties of her delicate cloak.
“We’ve already kissed and sharing a bed… it’s only natural,” he said with a light smile. His eyes filled with understanding as he teased her gently.
“I just wrapped your injuries, but I didn’t realise Miss. Ruan would be so shy after that. Don’t you trust me? Are you worried I might misuse this chance to do something inappropriate?”
As the straps came undone, her silvery-white cloak slipped to the floor, resembling bright snow in winter. The beige silk pyjamas beneath were fully revealed, sending a chill through Ruan Longling, who instinctively wrapped her arms around herself.
‘I’m not worried about you doing something wrong. I’m more concerned that you’re too uptight and follow the rules too strictly. If Wang Chulin is really that easy to manipulate, why would I need to work so hard? What’s the big deal about untying my cloak? Why not just unbutton my pyjamas too?
But she could never let the man know these thoughts; he’d be so startled he might just bolt!
“How could that be?” So, Ruan Longling could only stare wide-eyed, disbelief written all over her face. “Brother Chulin is a true gentleman, so I can trust you completely! If you weren’t, why would I leave so many people at the temple and come looking for you instead of asking for help elsewhere?”She looked at the man shyly and said again, “Honestly, this bed feels a bit cramped. If two people are sharing it, it might get a little tight, and I don’t want to disturb Brother Chulin’s sleep! But since you are okay with it, I guess I can go along with it!”
To show her trust, Ruan Longling confidently stepped over to the bed, kicked off her shoes and socks, and settled in. She then patted the space next to her and said casually, “Brother Chulin, it’s getting late. Let’s get some rest.”
One had hidden intentions while the other had a plan in mind. Both were aware of the situation but chose to act oblivious as they lay there together.
The bed wasn’t very big. It could fit two people, but their clothes were bound to brush against each other, and it creaked with even the slightest movement.
This was Ruan Longling’s first time sharing a bed with a man, and it would be a lie to say she wasn’t feeling a bit anxious.
The man beside her was behaving perfectly, breathing steadily and lying still, almost like he was just watching over a patient.
But that didn’t stop her heart from racing…
She didn’t have time to dwell on it, though; the plan to eliminate the father and protect the son had her mind racing.
‘They are already sharing a bed!
What now?
Of course, we have to share a pillow!’
There was only one pillow on the bed, and Li Zhulin was using it.
Ruan Longling tilted her head a bit, fluttered her eyelashes, and caught a glimpse of his striking profile.
His brow bones were high and broad, the bridge of his nose was straight, his eyelashes were long, his lips were thin, and even his jawline was incredibly smooth!
“What’s up? Do you think I’m good-looking, Miss Ruan? Or do you have some sneaky intentions towards me?”
‘How did he know I was staring at him when his eyes were still closed? ‘
Ruan Longling was feeling a bit playful. But on the flip side, her left arm was hurt. It wasn’t too serious, but it made movement tricky. If things got too heated, it would definitely be a distraction.
Plus, even though she could be a bit reckless sometimes, she held a deep respect for gods and Buddhas. Under the watchful eyes of the divine, she really couldn’t bring herself to chase after romance.
‘Not tonight, for sure! ‘
But she didn’t want to leave empty-handed! Just sharing a bed wasn’t going to cut it!
“Brother Chulin, I can’t sleep well without a pillow…”
The man didn’t open his eyes but lifted his hand to grab the pillow from under his head and offered it to her.
But she gently turned him down. “If you give me the pillow, Brother Chulin won’t have anything to rest on, right? I don’t want that.”
There was a brief silence in the air.
He didn’t say a word, as if he had anticipated all her moves.
‘So what was next? ‘Li Zhulin thought she’d suggest they share the pillow and sleep together.
But he was wrong.
Instead, he felt his head being lifted, raised high and horizontally, and then the pillow was placed back under the man’s neck.
She leaned in closer and whispered softly in his ear, “Mind if I use Brother Chulin’s arm as a pillow tonight?”
The sweet scent of peaches enveloped him as she drew near, and her gentle breaths brushed against his ear, sending shivers down his spine.
He didn’t respond with a yes or no. Instead, he just pulled her, wrapping his arms around her delicate frame.
As morning broke, life began to stir, and the first warm rays of sunlight streamed into the Buddhist temple through the window.
The woman nestled in his arms was still fast asleep.
Li Zhulin, with a hint of darkness under his eyes, couldn’t help but glance down at her again. He noticed her long, feather-like eyelashes fluttering slightly, her limbs curled up, and her right arm resting on his chest.
In the sunlight, her skin glowed like fresh snow, and her beauty seemed to radiate even more.
Li Zhulin felt his heart race, and he took a deep breath, closing his eyes for a moment.
‘Damn it!
‘If only she hadn’t been hurt!
I’ll find those men in black and make them pay!’
