Chapter 3
“No.” Xu Xingxing denied it.
The man beside her chuckled softly, narrowed his eyes, and said, “It seems that I am not mistaken.”
Xu Xingxing’s heart began to beat fast, and she couldn’t think of what to say to this. She simply stared blankly at the rain. When neither of them spoke, the situation turned embarrassing. All they were surrounded by were the sounds of wind and rain.
Fortunately, Huai Jing’s cell phone rang at that moment, and he took out his cell phone to answer the call.
“Mr. Huai, Director Fynn is still waiting for you.”
“Well, I’ll be there soon,” Huai Jing replied. He was on the phone, yet he didn’t forget to hold the umbrella for her. Xu Xingxing, who wanted to leave, didn’t have the courage to do so.
As Huai Jing’s phone call ended, he handed the umbrella over to her. In addition to that was a business card.
“I have something to deal with. This is my personal phone number. You can contact me here,” Huai Jing said.
Xu Xingxing got frightened and shook her head. “No…no need”.
His brows raised slightly. “Huh? Wh…”
Before Huai Jing could finish speaking, the woman ran into the heavy rain with her bag on her back, exclaiming, “I’m sorry!”
She finally got into a taxi and went home. Xu Xingxing had come to Xiacheng a month ago. Then, with Chen Wanwan’s help, she had rented a cozy and fully-furnished one-bedroom apartment.
After reaching home, she took a shower, then made and ate a simple meal. Before going to bed, she opened a professional book on the German language to read, but her mind was full of thoughts about Huai Jing. She slowly recalled the events of that unforgettable night and realized she had never been as happy as that day.
However, her happiness couldn’t cover the fact that even though it was just a one night stand between a single man and a woman, it was an inappropriate and shameful thing. In order to avoid meeting him again, she went from Huaicheng to Xiacheng. She thought she could bury the incident, but had not expected to meet him in Xiacheng, on top of which, he was even her big boss.
Why did he give me his private number? That kind of person is ruthless, so I have to stay away from him in the future.
Over the next few days, Xu Xingxing never met him again, at work or outside, and her heart gradually calmed down. She became busy, and eventually didn’t have time to think about him.
When Xu Xingxing got off work early on Friday, she decided to cook, something she liked doing. In order to save time, Xu Xingxing didn’t go home to change her clothes, instead heading directly to the vegetable market near the apartment building.
Friday night was the peak time for people getting off work, so the vegetable market was crowded. Xu Xingxing had worn an OL suit to work today, which had been bought by Chen Wanwan and her. Chen Wanwan had complained that the clothes she usually wore were old-fashioned and conservative, and had taken her to buy several new sets of clothing. Even though they were not like her previous clothes, all the skirts still reached past the calves.
This was already progress. Originally, she had wanted to buy pants, but was stopped from doing so by Chen Wanwan.
Xu Xingxing’s understanding of her own position was quite accurate. She was twenty-eight years old this year, and had just gotten divorced some time ago, and would have been considered to be an abandoned woman in ancient times. She just wanted to wear comfortable clothes, no matter how beautiful something was, she felt they were useless. Moreover, she was not too confident in her body image. However, as soon as she told this to Chen Wanwan, she was scolded.
This vegetable market was large, with fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and seafood to be found every day. After having been here several times now, she was quite familiar with the market, so she went directly to the seafood area. She wanted to make braised fish on the weekend.
Xu Xingxing smiled at the fishmonger and said, “I want to buy a carp.”
“Okay, how about this one? It’s quite fat, it’ll be good braised or steamed.”
“Okay,” Xu Xingxing nodded and thanked the fishmonger with a smile.
Just as she was paying the fishmonger, someone from behind shouted, “Be careful!”
When she looked back, she saw a cart full of seafood rushing towards her, so she moved to the side. Unfortunately, her ankle hit something, and she felt pain. She squatted down to look at her ankle.
“Are you all right?” The fishmonger asked.
Even though it was painful, she replied, “It’s okay.”
When she tried to stand up, a shadow blocked her view and the fish in her hand was taken away, and then she was hugged by someone. She gasped in shock and met a pair of deep light-brown eyes.
“President, you…?” She struggled and said, “No… Put me down.”
Huai Jing looked at the woman who was struggling to get down, so he hugged her tighter, carried her out of the market and got into his car.
Xu Xingxing felt that Huai Jing was like a nightmare, that just when she was about to forget about him, he appeared again.
When Xu Xingxing was seated in the co-pilot seat, she asked, “Why is Mr. Huai here?”
“I’m following you,” he answered.
Xu Xingxing was shocked, she hadn’t expected him to be this shameless after having rejected his proposal that day at the company.
Huai Jing looked at Xu Xingxing’s swollen ankle and said, “I’ll take you to the hospital.”
Out of fright, her heart started beating very fast and her face turned red. “No, no… No need to go to the hospital. I can go home.”
A chuckle echoed in the car.
“Why? Are you afraid of me?” Huai Jing asked as looked at her with a smile on his lips.
Xu Xingxing finally gathered the courage to ask, “What do you want from me?”
Huai Jing narrowed his eyes and replied, “I want to take care of you.”
