Mrs. Mei's Survival Diary - Chapter 12.1
Chapter 12.2 – Teaching the Wicked
As per Rong Yinshuang’s instructions, the next morning, Uncle Bao went to Mei’s house to tell Zhao Qian that a merchant wanted to buy the house.
Zhao Qian felt happy, had a quick bite, and then went with Uncle Bao.
Zhao Qian waited outside the house for a long time but didn’t see anyone. This made her mad at Uncle Bao. “Why hasn’t anyone arrived yet? Are you trying to trick me?”
“This servant won’t dare to cheat Madam,” Uncle Bao said with a little bit of fear. “The boss already paid a deposit of one hundred taels. So he will definitely come. Madam, let’s wait for a while.”
[Tl Notes: Since China did not have a formally recognised national currency until 1933, they used taels as their currency: a bronze coin that was equal in value to one-thousandth of a tael.]
Zhao Qian checked the two pieces of silver in her purse and realised they were the same weight. However, she was frustrated and muttered some curse words, then stood by the stone lion in front of the door, feeling impatient.
Uncle Bao: “Madam, I can get you a chair to sit on.”
Zhao Qian looked at Uncle Bao with a nasty grin. She lifted her head and gave Uncle Bao the order.
However, when Uncle Bao was walking down the steps, he fell and accidentally ran into Zhao Qian, making a loud noise.
Uncle Bao hit Zhao Qian and almost knocked her over. She stood still with the help of a maid and slapped Uncle Bao while yelling at him.
“You’re an old b*stard who can’t see well. I don’t know why Mei Yuan would have used you in the first place. You’ve been a housekeeper for a long time, and you really think highly of yourself. Hmph, this old fool.”
Uncle Bao was sad because he got yelled at. He wanted to apologise, but Zhao Qian’s maid pushed him aside, and the maid got credit for bringing a chair.
Uncle Bao felt sad and went to hide behind Zhao Qian’s carriage after being scolded. He rested, leaning on the carriage, and looked at the items in his hand.
Rong Yinshuang asked Uncle Bao to take the thing that Zhao Qian hung on her waist.
Uncle Bao didn’t understand why Rong Yinshuang wanted that, but as he said that he would help her, Uncle Bao made up his mind. Anyway, he no longer wanted to work for the Mei family, so he thought of helping Rong Yinshuang.
He also wanted to teach Zhao Qian a lesson; therefore, he would do anything to fulfil his wish.
After a while, a carriage came, and Zhao Qian got up from the chair. When it stopped near the house, someone got off the carriage and walked towards Zhao Qian.
“Madam, our boss is coming soon to check the house. So you should be prepared. Our boss prefers to drink fresh tea, and it must be Biluochun tea. Do not try to deceive him.”
After that, the person got into the carriage and drove it back.
[Tl: Famous green tea known as Biluochun, or Bi Luo Chun, originated in Suzhou, Jiangsu, China’s Dongting mountain region, close to Lake Tai.]
Zhao Qian watched the carriage leave and felt unsure of what was happening. She had never met someone so stuck-up before. They hadn’t discussed business yet, but they were acting like they were in charge and making lots of demands.
‘This is really annoying.’
She looked around and then said loudly, “Please open the door.” Then she looked at her maids and added, “Go in and boil some water, and someone go home quickly and get good Biluochun tea. I want to see which important person is coming.”
When Uncle Bao heard Zhao Qian calling him, he quickly threw the things he took from Zhao Qian into a pile of rocks by the road. Then he took the key from his belt, walked up the stone steps, and unlocked the front door of the house.
Zhao Qian took a deep breath and allowed the people behind her to go ahead first. She walked in the middle and kept looking at the big old tree in the yard. And she felt like someone was looking at her next to the tree.
She scolded herself for being paranoid and then commanded her maids to prepare water to make tea.
After the maids took the order and went to do their tasks, Zhao Qian stood alone. After a while, she got bored, so she started to walk around the hallway.
Zhao Qian remembered the person who used to live here and what she said and did to her.
–“What are you? A lowly servant. Do you think he really likes you?
Oh, do you want to argue with me? Why are you arguing with me about something unimportant? What about the nice things he gives you?” – –
Zhao Qian tried hard to shake off the things she remembered, and as she turned around, a scary white face that was covered with blood appeared in front of her.
“Ah!”
Have a nice day!
