Chapter 11.3

Hearing the familiar voice, both Shen Su and Shen Qingqing looked up and saw Li Zhi standing behind the railing, looking down at them. 

The high-ranking Marquis Pingxi wore a round-collared robe with a white background and dark cloud patterns today. He had phoenix eyes with a smile and a gentle face, and his graceful and luxurious demeanour made him look less and less like a businessman.

“It turns out to be the Marquis.” Shen Su raised his hand and greeted.

“I’m looking for an eagle; would you two gentlemen be interested in going upstairs to have a look?” Li Zhi recognised the little girl in the men’s clothes and invited them with a smile.

Shen Su knew that his sister was sacred to those ferocious birds, so he declined the invitation respectfully. “Marquis, thank you for your offer, but we’ll pass.”

But before he could finish talking, Shen Qingqing stopped him and quietly said, “Brother, I want to go and see.”

Shen Su was surprised and asked his sister, “Are you not scared anymore?”

Shen Qingqing said playfully, “I’m a little afraid, but I feel better because my brother is with me.”

She had to resolve the problem with Li Zhi so she could hold back her fear of fierce birds for a while.

Shen Su, who knew his sister, had some doubts. ‘My sister has grown up, and she is at the age of falling in love, and with the outstanding appearance of Marques Ping Xihou,…wait, is she having a crush on Marques Ping Xihou?’ If the sister wanted to intentionally go near Li Zhi and ignore how a lady should act, then, as her older brother, he needed to stop her.

“It’s almost noon. Let’s go home.” Shen Su said firmly, without any chance to change her mind, “I will come with you next time.” 

The older brother looked serious, and Shen Qingqing was surprised.

At that moment, Shen Su spoke again and politely said no to Li Zhi.

Li Zhi kept smiling and said kindly, “Since you both have something to do, I won’t make you stay, and I won’t send you to the door.” 

Shen Su agreed. He held his sister’s arm and walked to the counter.

Shen Qingqing didn’t want to surrender. After she walked two steps, she looked up at the second floor and saw that Li Zhi was still watching them.

When Li Zhi saw the little girl’s angry eyes, he made a pained smile as if he wanted to say something.

Shen Qingqing didn’t trust him. She was wondering how Marquis Ping Xihou, who was busy, could find time to choose birds but not keep his promise and give back her embroidered shoe.

When she was mad, Shen Qingqing made a face without thinking.

When Shen Su saw his sister’s expression, he thought his sister was mad because she couldn’t talk to Li Zhi. This made him feel even more confused and upset.

The brother and sister left the store after paying for their bird. When they were ready to leave the Bainiao Pavilion, a shop clerk ran over to them. He held a square-foot-long box and said to the two of them, “The rules of the small shop are that every distinguished guest who visits the shop will be presented with a phoenix wood carving. The wood carving is made of ordinary wood and shows a little bit of our feelings. I hope the two gentlemen will not dislike it.” After that, he opened the box and revealed a phoenix ornament made of huanghuali.

[Tl: Huanghuali is a Chinese name that translates to “yellow flowering pear” wood.]

Shen Su was a bit shocked. This phoenix ornament was beautifully made and could be sold for a lot of money on its own.  ‘Does Bainiao Pavilion have a lot of money and is using this method to get customers to come back often?’

“Thanks.” Shen Su took the box and gave it to his sister right away.

Shen Qingqing was mad because her brother messed up her opportunity to ask Li Zhi some questions. She was almost going to get mad when she saw the boy next to her wink at her.

Somehow, Shen Qingqing remembered Li Zhi. ‘But, can this box hide her shoe?’

In any case, Shen Qingqing took the box first.

As Shen Qingqing went home, she grasped the package and considered what it could be. If her brother hadn’t been seated next to her, she’d have opened it immediately.

The little girl seemed to be feeling uneasy, so Shen Su couldn’t take it anymore and asked in a serious voice, “Qingqing, what do you think of Marquis Ping Xihou?” 

Shen Qingqing was surprised; she stared at her brother without expression. ‘Why did he suddenly ask this question?’

Shen Su looked serious, looked at the carriage curtain, and asked straight out, “Marquis Ping Xihou is good-looking and has saved your life. Is it possible that my sister likes him a lot?”

Shen Qingqing said, “…”

Just as she was going to argue, Shen Qingqing saw her brother’s serious expression and finally realised why he didn’t want her to go upstairs to meet Li Zhi.

Shen Qingqing laughed, moved closer to her brother, and whispered, “Don’t worry, brother, your sister won’t look at him even if she is blind!”
