Chapter 12.3

Queen Shen really loved the ink orchid table screen and the orchid embroidery made by Shen Jiarong and Shen Jiayi.

When it was Shen Qingqing’s chance, she smiled and took the birdcage covered with red cloth from Yudie’s hand. “Auntie, can you guess what your niece got for you?” she asked Queen Shen.

Queen Shen looked at the thing covered with a red cloth with interesting eyes, but she couldn’t understand what it was.

Just as Shen Qingqing was going to answer, Zhao Ji, who had been quiet, suddenly said, “Wait, let me guess first.”

In this situation, Shen Qingqing certainly agreed.

Zhao Ji got up and walked over to Shen Qingqing in just a few steps.

Only then did Shen Qingqing notice that Zhao Ji was a lot taller than her. 

Shen Qingqing instinctively put her hands in front of the bird cage and looked down.

Zhao Ji smiled a little and walked halfway around the cage. He quickly bent down and looked at it for a while.

Zhao Ji kept leaning forward but raised his eyes, stared at Shen Qingqing, and guessed. “There is a sound of flapping wings inside; I guess it is a kind of bird.” 

The man’s eyes were shining and mischievous, and Shen Qingqing wasn’t used to it, so she quickly said, “My cousin has a good ear.”

After Shen Qingqing said that, she looked at Queen Shen and removed the red cloth.

The oriole bird inside chirped happily two times.

Queen Shen was very surprised and felt happy. But when she saw Shen Qingqing’s face, which looked like Mrs. Song, Queen Shen’s happiness went right away. 

When she raised an oriole bird when she was in the Shen family, her brothers were young, and they could not remember it clearly. But Mrs. Song knew how much she loved that bird.

‘It must be Mrs. Song who said it to Shen Qingqing. Are you trying to please me? Why do you want to please me?’

Queen Shen knew the answer when she looked at her son.  “This bird is interesting. Qingqing’s aunt will accept it. But it’s a pity that the bird is trapped in a cage all day long. It’s better to let it go,” Empress Shen said with pity.

Shen Qingqing was surprised and shocked by the unexpected result.

“If the Queen Mother doesn’t want to take care of a bird, she can give it to her son. I think it looked interesting.” Seeing the little girl looked embarrassed, Zhao Ji said as he approached Shen Qingqing.

Queen Shen frowned and scolded her son. “The prince is busy with school and politics, so he shouldn’t waste time raising birds. Don’t get distracted and lose your ambition.”

Shen Qingqing’s face turned pale, and Mrs. Chen quickly made her daughter kneel. She also kneeled and said, “Queen, please calm down. It’s because I didn’t think well. I shouldn’t have allowed her to bring this useless thing into the palace.”

Queen Shen got up from her seat, and with the help of two maids, she stood up. She told them not to worry about the prince’s misbehaviour.

Shen Qingqing and her mother apologised again.

Zhao Ji felt upset and left with an ugly face.

Mrs. Chen’s heart became heavier and heavier as she listened to Zhao Ji’s footsteps. 

As soon as she came in, she noticed Zhao Ji’s abnormal attention to her daughter. Afraid of causing any misunderstanding, Chen deliberately pointed out her daughter’s love for beauty and luxurious things in front of Queen Shen to show that they did not have the desire to send Shen Qingqing to the palace. After all, she would never let her daughter marry a prince who was related to the Emperor. 

‘Who would have guessed that the prince would openly support my daughter? Queen Shen must really dislike both of us.’
