Chapter 15.1

The Emperor Qingde assigned Empress Shen and Noble Concubine Chun to handle the draft without interfering with it.

Actually, Empress Shen and Noble Concubine didn’t have to do any work because there were female officers in the palace that were trained to do those tasks.

The last selection would happen in two days. And this morning Mommy Xi handed over portraits of thirty-nine pretty ladies to the Empress Shen and the Noble Concubine.

Empress Shen looked at them one by one.

Noble Concubine Chun didn’t have to worry too much about the prince getting a wife, so she just glanced at them quickly.

Empress Shen finished looking at all the pictures of girls. “The Emperor wants me to pick a wife for the prince this time. Do you have a favourite among the main concubine and the other side concubines? If not, we should decide today,” she looked at Noble Concubine Chun and said with a happy face,

Everyone knew that the final selection day was just a formality.

Seeing the Noble Concubine Chun was pondering with a serious expression on her face, Empress Shen smiled and gave Concubine Chun three pictures of beautiful girls. “I haven’t decided who will be the main concubine and side concubine yet. I really like these three. Let’s see what my sister’s choice is.”

Noble Concubine Chun looked thoroughly at the three pictures of pretty girls. They all were from well-known families. So she agreed and complimented them with a smile.

Empress Shen gazed at Noble Concubine Chun’s beautiful face and said, “I will reconsider who will be chosen as the Crown Princess and the other concubine.”

Noble Concubine Chun agreed and said, “Yes, that’s correct.”

After looking at the picture, Noble Concubine Chun left the Empress’s palace.

Bai Lu, the personal maid of Noble Concubine Chun, whispered after they went back to Yichun Palace. “Your Majesty, they probably know who they want to be the crown prince. They didn’t tell you on purpose because they were scared you would get involved, right?”

Noble Concubine Chun stayed in the Empress’s palace the whole morning, so she was a bit tired. She relaxed on the couch and smiled when she heard the words.

Noble Concubine Chun knew that Empress Shen was worried that she might talk to the Emperor and cause problems for the good daughter-in-law the Empress had picked.

She suddenly felt nervous and touched her stomach with a bit of fear in her eyes. ‘If I don’t have a son, me, my daughter, and brother will not be treated well when the prince becomes king.’

Although Emperor Qingde was nearly fifty years old, there was still hope for her to get pregnant. But if Emperor Qingde died quickly, the concubine and her children would also suffer a lot. ‘Okay, let’s focus on my good brother for now.’

“Noble Concubine Chun said she was tired and asked to invite the Marquis to come over.”  The young eunuch said to Li Zhi.

Li Zhi had just stepped out of Zhenghe Palace, the palace of Emperor Qingde. When he learned that his sister was looking for him, he headed to Yichun Palace quickly.

“Why do you want to meet me?” he asked as soon as he saw Noble Concubine Chun.

Before answering his brother’s question, she waved her hand and signalled for Bai Lu and the others to give them some privacy.

“Brother is very clever,” Noble Concubine Chun said to her brother when everyone in the palace had left the door. “What can I keep secret from you?”

Li Zhi, who appeared helpless, said, “You mean about Miss Shen?”

With a smile, Noble Concubine Chun stated, “You’re correct. My brother has a strong affection for Miss Shen.”

Whether he wants to marry the girl or not, Li Zhi made it clear that he won’t be picked based just on her appearance. “You no longer have to worry about me, sister.“

Men had strong desires, but no mother wanted to see her son with other women she disliked. If Empress Shen expected a lot from the prince, she was less likely to put him around beautiful women.

Noble Concubine Chun laughed and said, “What if she gets chosen? Will my brother regret it?”

Li Zhi didn’t reply yet, but he couldn’t stop thinking about Shen Qingqing looking at him angrily. ‘It is a pity that such a sweet little girl would get tricked by the prince. It would hurt her.’

“The prince doesn’t deserve her,” said Li Zhi calmly.

Noble Concubine Chun understood her brother’s words clearly.

The brother and sister looked at each other and talked at the same time.

“How will you make her not win the draft?”

“Even if she doesn’t win the draft, the Shen family won’t easily say yes to my brother’s proposal to marry.”

Once the words were spoken, the hall fell silent for a moment.

Noble Concubine Chun smiled and rolled her eyes.

Li Zhi shook his head and said sadly, “Just let her marry quickly, so you don’t have to keep asking me about it every day.”

He wouldn’t be sad if Shen Qingqing married someone else, so it was not a big deal.
