Chapter 4.2

The Shen family had a total of three rooms. There were three sons and a daughter, who was the current empress. The Empress and the first son were born to his first wife. The second son’s family and the third son’s family got along very well because the two brothers have the same family.

 Since Shen Qingqing was the only girl in the third room, she used to enjoy playing with her cousins in the second room when she was young.

 Shen Qingqing has six female cousins in all. Now four of the girls were married, and only Shen Jiarong and Shen Jiayi were still waiting to get married. Shen Jiarong was the fifth girl in the first room, and Shen Jiayi was the sixth girl in the second room.

 “My grandma’s birthday is on the tenth of the next month. We used to have parties to celebrate it. After the third and fourth sisters got married, there were only two of us left: the sixth sister and me.” Shen Qingqing sighed quietly as she shook her fan slowly.

 Shen Wang smiled and turned his head when he heard the words. He said, “My sister will get married next year.”

 Shen Qingqing was surprised and then hit her brother’s top of the head. “Stop saying silly things.”

 Shen Wang said sadly, “I’m not making things up. My dad told my mom that you will get married when we come back to Beijing.”

 “Be quiet,” Mrs. Shen said when she noticed her daughter blushing with embarrassment. She looked at her son angrily and said, “You’re not allowed to say that.”

 Shen Wang laughed upon hearing his mother’s angry words.

 Shen Qingqing held up her fan and hid in the corner without looking at anyone.

 Mrs. Shen smiled and held her daughter’s small hand. ‘In a blink of an eye, my little girl has reached her marriageable age.’

 The group of carriages went slowly through the city gate, and they got into the city, into the busier and more lively streets.

 Seeing that, Shen Wang wanted to stroll on those streets.

 Mrs. Shen was concerned that people on the street would stare at her daughter, so she told her youngest son to go the next day with his brother.

 “I also want to go,” Shen Qingqing said with a lazy tone. Every year, the fashion in the city changed, so she had to visit different places to see what was popular. She didn’t want to feel out of place when talking to ladies from the capital, so she made sure to keep up with the latest trends. She didn’t want to point out that she was a countryside girl who had come to the city.

 Mrs. Shen sadly said, “Okay, okay, you all go; I will stay home.”

 After chatting and laughing, the carriage drove for about 30 minutes and then stopped.

 Before Shen Qingqing stepped out of the car, she heard her cousins greeting her father. She smiled and checked in the mirror to make sure her makeup was okay. Then she put away her small mirror and went with her mother out of the car.

 “Qingqing” Shen Jiayi, the sixth girl, ran over happily and gave Shen Qingqing a hug.

 Shen Qingqing laughed and acted like she was grossed out. She said, “It’s so hot today; hurry up and let go. I don’t want to start sweating.”

 Shen Jiayi smiled and let go of her cousin. She held Shen Qingqing’s little hands and looked at her lovingly. After looking at her cousin’s face many times, Shen Jiayi sincerely complimented her cousin, saying, “Qingqing is becoming more and more beautiful. Look at her gentle face; it looks like she could cry. Wow, that’s really something to be jealous of.”

 While they were talking, the oldest brother, Shen Zhuo, the second brother, Shen Jin, and the youngest sister, Shen Jiarong, also joined the conversation in the first room.

 The three siblings all looked at Shen Qingqing’s face at the same time.

 Actually, if a young girl of thirteen or fourteen takes good care of herself and doesn’t spend too much time in the sun or wind, her face will stay smooth and soft. But Shen Qingqing’s skin was very white and delicate. It wasn’t very obvious when she stood alone, but when she was with Shen Jiarong and Shen Jiayi, she suddenly appeared more seductive.

 Shen Jiayi didn’t care if her cousin was prettier than her, but Shen Jiarong did care because she was the daughter in the first room.

 Shen Jiarong looked at Shen Qingqing’s pretty dress and hairpin. That hairpin looked really nice. The butterfly had really thin wings made of red gold that sparkled with tiny rubies and turquoise inside. The sun was shining, and the butterfly’s wings were shaking a little, which made the light very bright.

 Shen Qingqing had beautiful accessories, like a pretty butterfly hairpin, shiny pearl earrings, and special jade bracelets.

 Shen Jiarong felt jealous, and her eyes became red.
