It was the winter vacation, and I took four days off and went home to visit my relatives. At that time, his family had moved to the superior city, City G, two stops ahead of my home.

There was a snowstorm in the south, and the train got stuck because the railways were blocked. Because I couldn’t go home for Chinese New Year, Teacher Lu said he would drive me back to my home.

I was too shy to meet his parents—no, my in-laws—so I decided to wait at the corner near his house while he went to get his car.

Seeing a person selling cotton candy nearby, I was so excited and bought a big cotton candy to eat with him.

When Teacher Lu came, he wanted to play a trick. He just hugged me and ate it with his head down.

After eating a little bit, he suddenly stopped, stood straight, and called out, “Dad, Mom.”

I looked where he was looking. All of a sudden, my whole body felt cold, and the wind was biting me.

On the other side of the street, Teacher Lu’s parents, Teacher Wu and old Teacher Lu, were looking at us with kindness and warmth, smiling so warmly.

I just held up the cotton candy dumbfoundedly. There should be clear white syrup left on my forehead, nose, and lips.

I felt embarrassed and didn’t know what to do.

Teacher Lu smiled and shouted, “Hey, do you guys want some cotton candy?”

The first time I met Teacher Lu’s parents after getting married, I was holding a cotton candy like a fool. This was really awkward because this was the first time I met my teachers after they became my in-laws.

I went to Teacher Lu’s house, and after we ate, we went for a walk.

The two older people talked a lot more than Teacher Lu, so there were plenty of things to talk about. The small feeling of embarrassment went away when everyone started talking and laughing.

“Teacher Lu, can you tell us what candy you are eating? It seems really tasty and makes you happy.”

Teacher Lu: “Happy candy.”

Me: “…”

Teacher Lu whispered in my ear, “When you say that, I really want to go to the bridal chamber soon.”

When we went upstairs, they had already set up new shoes, new quilts, new cups, and new curtains in the room. I felt really moved, but I didn’t like the style and colour of the bed sheets, quilt, and curtains.

Teacher Wu: “Is this not pretty?”

I quickly waved my hand and said, “It’s okay.”

Teacher Wu pointed to Teacher Lu and said, “He picked it.”

‘Of course, I know that only a straight man can make Fermat’s Last Theorem a conjecture printed in every corner of the bedroom (please imagine the sleeping martyr covered with…).’

[Tl: Fermat’s Last Theorem is a conjecture. One of the oldest and most well-known unresolved problems in number theory and all of mathematics is Goldbach’s conjecture.]

‘Lu Zhizhou is very talented, but he hasn’t had a good sense of beauty since he was young.’

Before I could do anything, Teacher Wu said, “All his ideas about beauty are focused on finding a wife.”

 ‘I think my mother-in-law is really good at understanding and dealing with emotions.’
