Chapter 14.1

Yu Hongdou was about to say something when her mother walked in and said, “Mr. He, if you haven’t had your dinner, you can join us for dinner if you don’t mind.”

The three young people were shocked by Mrs. Yu’s words.

He Yunqin turned his head to look at Mrs. Yu after glancing at Yu Hongdou’s face. “I am going out with your son soon, and I don’t have time to go home for dinner,” he said, smiling politely. “Sorry to disturb you.”

Yu Hongdou made a slightly sarcastic smile.

Mrs Yu also seemed to be taken aback for a moment, but she was so sophisticated after all that she hurriedly laughed again and said, “It would be great if Mr He would stay for dinner, but it’s a pity that we didn’t expect to have guests at home, and we didn’t make any preparations beforehand. The food is going to be served, so you come out after discussing things.” 

After her mother closed the door again, Yu Hongdou squinted at He Yunqin and said, “Mr. He, I heard you when I came in just now. It seems you had gone to the police station before you came here. Is it to impress my brother?”

He Yunqin pretended not to hear her sarcastic words, took a sip of his tea, and said, “I told Miss. Yu that I would help to solve this case, so I have to do some homework first before coming here.”

‘Even Peter Wang didn’t want to be involved in this, so will he entrust this matter to Mr. He? No… I don’t think so. Then why is Mr. He so interested in this case? What’s the catch?’ Yu Hongdou glanced under her eyes at He Yunqin and thought. “Mr. He, Inspector Wnag, said he didn’t have time to take this case, and why are you so interested in this?”

Yu Chongyi didn’t know exactly what happened in Yu Hongdou’s meeting with Wang Peter. When he found out, he realised that his sister and Peter Wang hadn’t come to an agreement. 

He looked at He Yunqin, a bit confused.

He Yunqin looked at Yu Hongdou and then placed the teacup in the tray. “Miss Yu, 

When you saw Peter Wang this afternoon, you mentioned that your cousin Pan Yuqi was at the tea party on Saturday at around three in the afternoon. In simple words, Pan Yuqi has been missing for over 50 hours. If the people who took her are the same as the ones who took Wang Meiping, Pan Yuqi is in big trouble. We should work together and not waste time testing each other. We need to find out where your cousin is right away.”

After hearing this, Yu Chongyi got worried again. He even had doubts about whether He Yunqin could help them. 

However, Yu Hongdou knew about He Yunqin’s skills beforehand, so she wasn’t surprised by what he said. She quickly responded by saying, “Yuan Ruoli from Gujin Bank is important in finding my cousin who went missing. Now that the questioning of Yuan Ruoli in the French Concession is not over, how can we talk about deciding on the next move? They need to wait and see what happens with Mr. Yuan’s questioning first. 

Anyway, I still have a doubt. Mr. He, why are you involved in this case? Is there a hidden agenda? Otherwise …”

He Yunqin interrupted Yu Hongdou and said calmly, “Miss Yu, when you visited Peter Wang this afternoon, I thought it was just a simple kidnapping, and I didn’t want to be involved at first. But later, I found out that it was more serious than I thought. Not just your cousin Pan Yuqi, but also Chen Baidie and Wang Meiping were all kidnapped by the same gang. Sadly, Wang Meiping was killed after being missing for three months. Your cousin still works with me at the same university, and I feel that I should help.”

Yu Hongdou clenched her teeth, felt defeated for a moment, and then stood up again. “Mr. He, you are not a cop, and even Mr. Wang didn’t want to help. Peter Wang is a specialist in this field, but as far as I know, you have learned about building things and machines. I don’t know what Mr. He thought when he hurried to help. How do we know you have ulterior motives?” She looked at his brother and said again, “My brother doesn’t have a high position in the police, but he has a lot of important files. If Mr. He wanted to do something with those files, my brother would lose his job.”

After hearing this, Yu Chongyi took a deep look at He Yunqin and became alert.

Seeing that the previous negotiation was about to fall through, He Yunqin didn’t answer for a moment but only looked at Yu Hongdou meaningfully. ‘She speaks sharply, but there is a slight smile on the corner of her mouth.’ 

Under the light of the colourful glass Western lamp above her head, her face looked as bright and clean as lotus petals in a quiet summer.

He looked straight at her for a while, then straightened his face and said, “Miss Yu, everyone is open-minded. Since I sincerely want to cooperate with you, I don’t have to hide anything. Peter Wang met me in Germany, and he and I learned a set of skills from a famous professor of trace science in Germany. About two years ago, Peter Wang went to a local hospital for medical treatment because of alcoholism. He entrusted me to write a series in his name for nearly a year, but later I was too busy, so Peter’s column officially ceased publication. Peter Wang never deliberately concealed this matter.” 

Yu Hongdou and Yu Chongyi were stunned.

Yu Hongdou refused to believe it at first, but after she settled down to think about it, she realised it could be true.

She could remember at the tea party that day, Peter Wang just kept repeating the same old tune from beginning to end and could hardly tell a new case, probably because of not his illness but not using his brain for a long time.

She also had to admit that the narration of Peter’s column was different from before, and the cases were exciting and better than any previous period.

‘So it was written by He Yunqin?’

Seeing the surprise of the two, He Yunqin smiled lightly, looked at Yu Hongdou, who still had doubtful black eyes, and said, “Miss Yu, I can solemnly assure you that I am here to help you find the Pan Yuqi and also sincerely investigate the disappearance of Wang Meiping and Chen Baidie. My ability can be verified slowly, but time does not wait for anyone. Right now, saving people is the most important thing. Both of you are smart people. So can you put aside your prejudices for a while and consider accepting my cooperation?”
