Chapter 19.1

Hongdou sat on the back seat of the foreign car, often looking at the door of Chen Baidie’s apartment.

The apartment was a new-style apartment with modern decorations and facilities built by foreigners in the style of a grand hotel. It was located on Yimo Road in the French Concession. There was also a so-called elevator in the building.

When they came out of Wang Peter’s place just now, He Yunqin called a foreign car from his home in order to save time. After the car arrived, he asked the driver to go home because he wanted to drive the car himself.

Wang Peter was reluctant at first, but after He Yunqin started the engine, Wang Peter threw his coat into the car and got into it.

He Yunqin asked Yu Chongyi after pulling into Yimo Road, “Is there a sentry outside Chen Baidie’s apartment?”

Yu Chongyi replied, “We left two colleagues behind when Chen Baidie suddenly vanished. The guards have left the flat because they were unable to locate any helpful hints.”

“That would save one trouble, Mr. Yu. It’s too eye-catching for the four of us to go up together; why don’t we go first?” He Yunqin said, glancing to the other side. Ms. Yu and Inspector Wang will enter later.”

“But the porter of this flat has very tight restrictions,” Yu Chongyi stated. “I can only bring you in jointly to look into the matter; if not, I fear the concierge won’t let you go. Anyone arriving after six o’clock will not be permitted entry without the permission of a specific tenant.”

He Yunqin tapped the steering wheel while pondering for a moment.

And before He Yunqin said anything, Wang Peter interrupted. “Since He Yunqin said so, it is natural he has a way. Officer Yu doesn’t need to say much; just go.”

Yu Chongyi realised what Wang Peter said. With a look of embarrassment on his face, he scratched his head and said, “What Detective Wang said is true; then I will go up first. Then open the door. Chen Baidie’s apartment is on the 4th floor; just turn left when you get out of the elevator.” And then he left.

Yu Hongdou looked angrily at Wang Peter, who had just sneered at her brother. Seeing the two men in the car talking with each other, she just looked outside the window.

He Yunqin also thought about what Yu Chongyi said before he left, and he and Wang Peter talked.

After a few minutes, they quickly fell silent.

Someone’s stomach growled inside the half-light, half-dark car. It was really humiliating to hear because the sound was amplified multiple times due to the quietness of the vehicle.

“It’s not me,” seeing Wang Peter was looking at him with a crooked eye, He Yunqin said.

Yu Hongdou patted her stomach discreetly. She hadn’t eaten from noon until now, and now she was really hungry. She planned to hide it, but her stomach decided to announce it to the world.

In fact, it was not an embarrassing thing, so Yu Hongdou just kept looking outside as if nothing had happened.

He Yunqin rubbed his chin, opened the car door, and said, “I’ll go out and have a look.”

He Yunqin returned after a while, but Yu Chongyi didn’t come with him.

After getting in, he gave Wang Peter one bag and Yu Hongdou the other. “Just stuff your belly first.”

Wang Peter stated consciously, “I’m not hungry.”

With a smirk, He Yunqin remarked, “I know you’re not hungry.”

When Yu Hongdou opened the bag, she discovered cooked yam and osmanthus cake with a lovely smell. She cleared her throat quickly, acting nonchalant as she said, “Thank you, Mr. He.”

He Yunqin responded, “Go upstairs to avoid damaging the traces; it’s best to finish eating in the car now.”

“Yes, I know.”

Once again, there was silence inside the car. He Yunqin looked at the rearview mirror and saw the girl was eating silently. Seeing her eating that way, he thought that she was thinking about how to give food to her brother.

After some time, Yu Chongyi came, reclaimed the key in his hands, and declared, “The room’s door is now ajar, and the building’s patrol will patrol every 30 minutes. I purposefully held off on opening the door until after they had left. It is safe to enter.”

It was eight minutes past five. He Yunqin looked at the young policeman and said, “Mr. Yu, We’ll go now. If you found something important at the train station, come to meet us at Wang Peter’s place.”

With a nod, Yu Chongyi stated, “Alright. Then he looked at his sister. “Brother is leaving first, and I will take you home when I come back.””

Yu Hongdou handed the bag of pastries that were only half eaten to Yu Chongyi. “Here, Mr. He bought it. Brother can eat it on the road.”

He Yunqin rested one arm on the car window and held the steering wheel with the other hand. Hearing the brother and sister talking, he was a little envious for some reason and suddenly remembered that he also has a younger sister, and suddenly felt refreshed.

When Yu Chongyi left, the rest went to the apartment.
