Red Bean Lives in the Republic of China - Chapter 26.1

Chapter 26.1
Pondering for a while, He Yunqin said, “Lu Jingheng and the driver were always seen together. Even if Lu Jingheng is a bit foolish, he should have picked up on something off about the driver. We can’t dismiss the chance that Lu Jingheng might be an accomplice. We need to question him thoroughly. Regardless of what Lu Jingheng knows, we can still uncover some leads from his account.”
“I’ll head back and consult with Director Bai. One team will track down the Lu family’s driver, while the other team will interrogate Lu Jingheng alongside,” Yu Chongyi agreed, saying with confidence.
About an hour later, just as Yu Hongdou was about to drift off again, Yu Chongyi returned. “Lu Jingheng doesn’t seem like an accomplice. After a long time of questioning, I couldn’t get any useful information from him. He also had no clue about the driver’s whereabouts. All I found out is that the driver’s name is Chen Jinsheng, a former Taoist priest who left that life behind. The war a few years back hit his temple hard, so he had to adapt and move south. Eight years ago, he ended up working for the Lu family. He’s well-liked for being steady and dependable. Lu Jingheng even asked him to be his driver because of his fighting skills. Seven years ago, Chen Jinsheng married another servant from the Lu family, Li Guihua, and they now have a four-year-old son.”
“So this man was a Taoist priest before?” Wang Peter looked at He Yunqin and asked, “It explains why he used such strange tricks on Wang Meiping. But… He has a wife and children, and his life is relatively stable. Why did he suddenly want to commit a crime?”
‘Lu Jingheng was always arrogant and might not notice the abnormality of a driver.’ Thinking that, He Yunqin asked Yu Chongyi, “Have you asked other servants of the Lu family what is unusual about Chen Jinsheng’s family?”
Yu Chongyi might not think as quickly as He Yunqin, but he’s definitely more thorough and patient. He quickly mentioned, “I found out that Chen Jinsheng’s wife, Li Guihua, has some health issues. She was pregnant with twins but lost them both. The last pregnancy seemed stable, but sadly, the baby developed a weird illness earlier this year. He had a low fever for months and wasn’t eating well. They tried treating him at Yu Ren Tang, but it didn’t help. They also visited several well-known Western clinics nearby, but all of them said there was a strange issue with his bone marrow. They estimated it would take a few months at most, and they couldn’t cure it. To treat their son, Chen Jinsheng and his wife drained their savings and even went into debt. Chen Jinsheng has been taking leave from work constantly. Over the past month or so, the couple seems to have accepted their situation and calmed down a bit. The other servants in the Lu household suggested that maybe this child just wasn’t meant to be theirs. They’re still young, and while having kids might be tough in the future, it doesn’t mean they can’t get pregnant again. Everyone encouraged them to stay positive.”
“Does this have anything to do with his murder?” Yu Hongdou asked, looking confused.
“I don’t know yet.” Yu Chongyi held the car window with his hand and looked back anxiously at the entrance of the police station. “The trunk of the Lu family’s car has been checked. It was cleaned by Chen Jinsheng long ago. There is no trace at all. Now I am waiting for news from my colleagues who went to Chen Jinsheng’s house. Chen Jinsheng has a wife and son. Even if he wants to escape, he will go home first. What’s more, his son is so sick. At this moment, I can only hope that my colleagues can catch him halfway.”
“The main issue is that we still haven’t located the other two missing people. First, we need to find them, whether they’re alive or not. If Chen Jinsheng doesn’t cooperate, we won’t be able to track them down. Even if we catch the killer, it won’t help us,” He Yunqin said with a serious look.
“Is this connected to that strange sorcery?” Wang Peter asked as he flipped through the Xuan Zong Ye Lu with Yu Hongdou. “Maybe the location of the two missing people ties into this. He Yunqin, should we check out Liuyun Temple later?”
The four of them were completely clueless about metaphysics. They stared at the odd image that resembled a celestial manuscript for a long time but couldn’t make heads or tails of it.
Yu Hongdou looked worried; her cousin Yuqi had been missing for six days. If a body was discovered, or if they couldn’t even find a body, her uncle and aunt would likely lose it.
Have a nice day!
