He Yunqin hurried back. He opened the door but didn’t step inside. “There’s an emergency at my friend’s place; I need to head over right now.”

He Mengmei replied angrily, “We haven’t even finished up our serious discussion. What kind of friend needs to go out this late?”

He Yunqin responded, “It’s not super urgent, but it’s not far either. We need to check it out now.”

With that, he shut the door and left.

He Mengmei was taken aback and muttered, “That little beast.”

Still, he understood that his son always knew what was important and wouldn’t just leave his family unless it was really necessary.

As he spoke, he made his way inside.

Yu Chongyi quickly followed him and said, “Bai Haili has left. He’s been trying to remarry for the past few months. I don’t get how he’s taken a liking to Hongdou. He brought a bunch of colleagues to my place tonight and insisted that Hongdou come out to see him. After my mom said no, he claimed it was fine if he couldn’t see her for a bit and that she would come again tomorrow morning. I thought about resigning, and when I realized this involved Hongdou, I immediately handed in my resignation. Even if I can’t avoid quitting, the worst that could happen is I can take my mom and Hongdou somewhere else to make a living.”

He Yunqin stayed quiet the whole time. When Yu Chongyi finally spoke the last sentence, He Yunqin was startled. “Move to another city? Will that really help us escape from Bai Haili?”

Yu Chongyi gave a bitter smile and replied, “I know that even if I switch jobs, Bai Haili will still find a way to bother me nonstop. He always uses any means necessary, and eventually, he’ll target Hongdou. Hongdou has to go to school now; she can’t just stay home all the time. A few months back, Bai Haili raped a female student like this and then forced her to become his concubine. Right now, I’m just worried that he’ll set his sights on Hongdou. Bai Haili is a guy I can’t touch or kill. I used to work at the police station, so I had to keep putting up with it. But if Hongdou really ends up in his hands, what do I have to lose? I’ll definitely go down with this monster.”

With every word he said, He Yunqin’s face grew paler and paler.

Yu Chongyi seldom witnessed such an expression on He Yunqin’s face. Without overthinking, he proceeded to say, “When I submitted my resignation, he presented the photo of me and Mr. He, Inspector Wang, who collaborated on that case. He mentioned that his patience was limited, granting me only one night to decide.” He let out a deep breath. “Should I allow my sister to become his second wife to escape jail time? I would provide him with an answer after careful consideration. Then I recalled that the photo also implicated Inspector Wang and you. It left me with no option but to contact both of you.

He Yunqin inquired, “Is Miss Yu aware of this?”

Yu Chongyi replied, “She returned home and fell asleep. She was unaware that Bai Haili was present; otherwise, she would have been too furious to rest. Bai Haili also said that he would come to take Hongdou in the morning and would take responsibility for taking Hongdou to school from now on.”

He Yunqin thought for a while, then laughed in anger. “I will come and take Miss Yu to school tomorrow morning. Mr. Yu, you should return home first. I will handle the situation with Bai Haili.”
