Chapter 36.2

The car came like a storm, splashing dust everywhere. Once it stopped, the door swung open and several people got out of it.

As the rough middle-aged man got out of the car with several others, he spotted the handsome young man with a serious face.  He was taken aback, and his face showed pure surprise. “Mr. He?”

Without looking at the man, He Yunqin instructed Yu Hongdou. “Hop in the car and wait for me.”

Yu Hongdou was caught off guard to see Director Bai at her doorstep so early in the morning. She was puzzled, and when she turned around, she noticed her brother’s serious expression followed by He Yunqin’s equally stoic expression. A vague understanding dawned on her, and she shot a cold glance at Director Bai before getting into He Yunqin’s car.

Director Bai shut the car door behind him, straightened up, and with a slight smile, said, “What a coincidence, I didn’t expect to run into Mr. He here. May I ask what brings Mr. He to this place?”

He Yunqin: “I’m here to take Miss Yu to school. What about you?”

Upon hearing that, Director Bai’s smile wavered a bit. ‘He Yunqin didn’t even acknowledge me, which was incredibly rude. Could it be that my earlier suspicion was right and this guy is indeed here for Yu Hongdou? But… He Yunqin had clearly brushed off this girl just a few days ago, so why is he waiting here now?’

A hundred thoughts raced through his mind in a split second, and he forced a smile, saying, “Is there some sort of misunderstanding? I had made an agreement with Chongyi and his sister last night. Why are the brother and sister bringing Mr. He along?”

He glanced at Yu Chongyi and pretended to sigh. “Chongyi, you’re being really rude. To say it nicely, you’re trying to please everyone but to be blunt. Isn’t it like you’re eating from one pot while thinking about another? And Miss Yu, you’re still a scholar, but how can you be so reckless at such a young age?” He wore a smile, but his eyes were sharp like a deadly sword.

Yu Hongdou had caught wind of these words in the car earlier and had a rough idea of what went down last night. Now, hearing Director Bai being so shameless, she was on the verge of exploding with anger. However, thanks to He Yunqin’s earlier instructions, she had to hold it together for now.

Yu Chongyi gritted his teeth and was about to respond with a dark expression, but He Yunqin stopped him.

He Yunqin looked at Bai Haili with a blank expression and said, “Director Bai, since we’ve crossed paths here, let’s be straightforward. Lately, I’ve been pursuing Miss Yu. Although she’s a bit reserved and still weighing her options, you might not know that I can be quite assertive. Until Miss Yu decides to accept me, no one in Shanghai should think about pursuing her except for me, He Yunqin. Director Bai, you’re a man of honour who tends to forget things easily. So today, I want to make this clear: I will be responsible for picking up and dropping off Miss Yu from now on. I hope you’ll remember this and keep your distance from her in the future.”

Bai Haili stared at He Yunqin in shock, and after a moment, his face slowly turned dark.

He Yunqin was just about to head out when something crossed his mind. “There’s one last thing I need to tell Director Bai. I’ve always been careful about my flaws. I really don’t want to hear any more of Director Bai’s comments that tarnish Miss Yu’s reputation. Director Bai has been in the government for a long time. He should know how to approach things and what to say. Morality should come first. This kind of gossip is simply unacceptable. I hope Director Bai takes care of himself.”

Bai Haili was a guy who knew how to talk. In the past, he would never have let himself be in such a position. But right now, he had a million things he wanted to say, yet not a single word came out. He could only stand there and watch as He Yunqin got into the car.
