Chapter 37.1

Although Yu Hongdou was seated in the car, she heard everything they talked outside.

He Yunqin’s words were like a sweet glass of wine, and the sweetness went straight to her heart.

They had driven away for some distance, but she still didn’t dare to look at him. “Thank you, Mr. He, for what you did just now,” she managed to mutter those words only after she could control her pounding heart.

Upon hearing the soft voice, He Yunqin gazed at the young woman’s reflection in the mirror. He saw her face glowing. At first glance, she appeared calm as always, but the slight lift at the corners of her mouth and the faint blush on her cheeks suggested otherwise. 

‘It seems she isn’t bothered by  my words and might even have enjoyed it.’ He had felt a bit awkward and anxious when he first got into the car, but now he was completely at ease.

It was just the two of them in the car, sitting only half an arm’s length apart. 

Outside, the sun shone brightly, and a gentle breeze occasionally wafted in through the window.

Feeling a gentle breeze on his face would be a pleasant feeling, but at this moment,  he felt very uncomfortable. He noticed his throat growing drier. In the past, he would have wanted to speed up while driving the car, but today, he found himself wanting to drive slowly. 

‘Could it be that my mother was right last night, and I really did have feelings for Miss Yu? What does it even feel like to be in love? It’s hard to figure out.’

Remembering that he had something important to discuss with her, he quickly pushed those thoughts aside and said seriously, “Due to the investigation a few days ago, Bai Haili took photos of the evidence to blackmail your brother. I’ll need to handle this issue after I drop you off at school.”

‘No wonder that man was so reckless in front of my brother and had come to Tongfu Lane to stir up trouble so early in the morning.’Upon hearing that, Yu Hongdou was taken aback. “What did he force my brother to do?”

He Yunqin said nothing. It was too shameful to talk about what Bai Haili’s thoughts were about the young woman. 

‘Why bother to upset her and myself?’ He just said calmly, “Bai Haili was just a street thug in his early years. He became successful because he did a lot of dirty things. Now that Bai Haili has a solid foundation, it will be difficult to deal with him. We can’t be impatient and need to plan slowly. Because of his humble background, he has been shamelessly acting like a junior in front of my father in recent years in order to make friends with the powerful. After being warned by me just now, it is not easy for him to openly oppose the He family, but I don’t guarantee that he will use other methods to plot against you.”

Yu Hongdou seldom saw He Yunqin talking about others in such an arrogant and contemptuous tone. However, with just a few casual words, he had stripped the seemingly glorious Bai Haili naked, revealing his naked face.

Hearing those words, her mood improved a bit. After some thought, she sat up straight and said, “No matter what Bai Haili is planning, my brother has wanted to quit being a policeman for a while now. As long as we handle the evidence matter correctly, he’ll get back to the family business. From now on, he’ll be the one to pick me up and drop me off at school. I really don’t think Bai Haili would dare to act out in broad daylight.”

He Yunqin replied firmly, “Your brother is honest and alone, so how can he protect you alone? For now, I’ll be the one picking you up from school.”

Yu Hongdou’s cheeks flushed. She realised that He Yunqin wasn’t just saying this to Bai Haili; he genuinely wanted to pick her up. She couldn’t help but smile, and her previously straight lips curled up again. Trying to hide it, she turned to gaze out the car window. Even though the car was moving slowly, it eventually reached the entrance of St. John’s.
