Red Bean Lives in the Republic of China - Chapter 52

Chapter 52
Yu Hongdou’s charming voice broke the silence in the room.
He Yunqin had already finished his work, so he put down his pen and stood up. “Then I’ll go take a shower.”
Upon hearing that, Yu Hongdou instantly regretted saying that. She had been under the impression that he was quite busy lately and that he needed to take her home in the morning before heading to school in the afternoon. Concerned he might be too worn out, she thought it best to encourage him to get some rest early. But as soon as the words left her mouth, the meaning shifted.
When He Yunqin stepped into the inner room without saying anything, it was obvious he had misread her signals.
To show it was not what she meant, she stayed put on the stool, calm and composed.
After a while, He Yunqin came out of the bathroom, roughly drying his hair with a towel.
He noticed that the bed was empty and his new wife was still absorbed in her reading in the outer room.
He tossed the towel back into the bathroom and walked over to her from behind. “Aren’t you going to sleep?”
Yu Hongdou was focused on the intricate drawing he had made and replied seriously, “I’m trying to figure out what shape this can take.”
He yanked the blueprint towards him and replied, “This is for Inspector Wang’s project.”
Yu Hongdou reached for her dictionary again. “Then I’ll just learn some German.”
He pulled her up. “I’ll teach you.”
“I don’t want you to be my teacher.”
“How can you learn if no one teaches you?”
“My learning speed is quite rapid.”
“You can’t just think your way through a foreign language. You need guidance.”
“Who would be such a scoundrel as to force themselves to teach someone else when they have nothing else to do?”
“I won’t teach anyone else, even if they ask. I’ll only teach you.
He pulled Yu Hongdou into the living room. As they passed the couch, he suddenly sat down, wrapping his arms around her.
“Don’t you want to go to bed?”
He held her waist tightly and let her sit on his lap. “Let’s sleep on the couch first, okay?”
This moment was unprecedented, and Yu Hongdou felt a mix of shame and anger. “What on earth are you going to do?”
He Yunqin felt a bit shy, but he wasn’t about to back down. He tilted his head and kissed her neck, slipping his hand beneath her shirt, and muttered, “You can crash on the couch if you want.”
‘How could that even be an option?’ She squirmed and finally hopped off his lap, darting around the bed while giggling. “You can sleep on the couch, but I’m definitely taking the bed.”
Even though He Yunqin was curious to explore new things with Yu Hongdou, he didn’t want to upset her, so he held back. Watching her dash away, he rubbed his nose and headed to the bed.
She was teasing him on purpose, lying far from him. He pulled back the covers, and just as she settled down, he seized the moment and pulled her underneath him. Then he held her head and leaned down to kiss her delicate neck peeking out from her collar. “It’s fine to sleep in the bed, but let’s try a different way to do it.”
As he spoke, he reached down, bent her legs, and made her wrap her arms around his waist.
This was a whole new experience for him as well.
Although Yu Hongdou felt incredibly shy this time, she didn’t push him away or flee. Instead, she closed her eyes and murmured, “I, I still feel a bit of pain. I held it all day.”
He Yunqin had just removed half of her clothes when he was taken aback by what he heard. ‘It turns out she is still in pain…’
He was not an animal who wouldn’t consider his wife’s feelings. Therefore, he didn’t take further action, and he just kept kissing her lightly, embracing her unique scent.
Realising he was being considerate, her heart melted. With closed eyes, she reached out, pulled him closer and whispered something in his ear.
Upon hearing it, He Yunqin was taken aback at first, but then a rush of happiness overcame him. He kissed her back and said, “Alright, I’ll be gentle.”
They were caught up in each other until late into the night. He Yunqin took care of Yu Hongdou and held her down gently.
After everything was over, Yu Hongdou was completely exhausted. She rested her head on his chest, dozing off with her eyes half-closed.
His breath brushed against her forehead. Even without words, she felt a deep sense of fulfilment and contentment in her heart, and it was incredibly peaceful.
She let out a satisfied sigh, reflecting on the events of the day. If she held onto her doubts for too long, they would only fester. She figured it was a good moment to talk about them. Looking up at him, she asked, “Your bicycle is really old; why don’t you get a new one?”
He Yunqin, who was almost drifting to sleep, woke up completely after hearing his wife’s unexpected question. ‘It’s not surprising that she asked that. She’s sharp; she would notice the bike eventually.’
He paused for a moment, not wanting to beat around the bush or lie, so he ran his hand through her hair and said straightforwardly, “I have my reasons for not replacing it.”
Yu Hongdou gazed into his dark eyes.
He didn’t back down at all. They kept their eye contact for a moment, and when she realised she couldn’t get him to talk, she pushed him away, turned to the other side, and said indifferently, “Alright, I won’t ask then.” After all, there would be plenty of time to find out later. She thought with a hidden smirk.
He Yunqin watched her back. The soft light from the bedside lamp illuminated her face, highlighting her features, which always reminded him of a fragrant peach.
But now, the peach was sulking, turning its peachy backside towards him.
He pulled her back gently. “Hongdou.”
Yu Hongdou shut her eyes and replied, “Hongdou is asleep.”
“Oh, really?” He Yunqin raised an eyebrow. “You’re still able to talk in your sleep.”
“It can not only talk, but it can also bite people.” Saying that she tugged at his arm that was wrapped around her chest and took a bite.
He Yunqin bore the pain and allowed her to bite him, but she only nibbled once before pushing his arm away. She examined the spot and found the bite so light that it left no mark at all.
Looking at his wife’s childish behaviour, he stifled a laugh and kissed the top of her head before muttering, “Hongdou, I never meant to keep secrets from you, but some matters involve not just me but others too. I need to wait until everything is settled before I can share it with you.”
Yu Hongdou stayed quiet, but her tense shoulders eased a bit.
He Yunqin continued, “Tomorrow we’ll head back to Tongfu Lane. I have got the gifts ready. In the morning, you can check if there’s anything else we need. My eldest brother isn’t a policeman anymore. According to what my mother-in-law said, he’s thinking about reopening the shop. I’ll talk to them tomorrow and figure out where to set up the shop so we can kick off the family business as soon as possible.”
Hearing those words, Yu Hongdou felt a warmth in her heart. But when she thought further, she worried that if He Yunqin got too involved, the store might end up being too fancy, which could hurt the business. Plus, with He Yunqin’s approach, he would definitely put in both money and effort. Her mother and brother were both very strong-willed, and they might not want to trouble He Yunqin. Also, they had just gotten married, and the He family was quite wealthy. If people found out that He Yunqin was financially supporting the Yu family, it would surely lead to complaints. So she replied, “Let’s discuss it tomorrow after I talk to mother and brother.”
