Red Bean Lives in the Republic of China - Chapter 54.2

Chapter 54.2
Yu Hongdou met He Yunqin at the entrance of the university.
He Yunqin arrived before 3.30 p.m. and when he didn’t see Yu Hongdou coming out for some time, he felt uneasy. Pondering for a while, he decided to check, and he ran into her just as he was about to head inside. “Hongdou,” He called out with relief.
After the conversation with her friend, Yu Hongdou felt a wave of sadness wash over her as if a thorn had stabbed her heart. When she heard his voice, she glanced up and met He Yunqin’s gaze. Her heart skipped a beat, but remembering what she had heard, she decided to ignore him.
Seeing his wife getting into the car without uttering a single word, He Yunqin was puzzled. ‘How could Hongdou’s mood have changed like this in just an hour?’ He stared at her in confusion and followed her into the car.
When the car started moving, Yu Hongdou tried to maintain her composure and said, “Gu Yun mentioned that Xu Yishan used to live in Chunyingli, and I heard that Keyu Theater was also there for a while. If you want to look into their past relationship, checking out Chunyingli might be a good idea. There’s an old lady from the Gu family who knows a lot about it. Gu Yun and I are planning to visit her after school tomorrow to inquire.”
Although her voice sounded normal, he could detect the hit of anger there. He wanted to lighten the mood, but he had no idea how to begin since he didn’t know what was bothering her. After thinking for a moment, he stated, “Wang Peter is going to Chunyingli tomorrow, so let him investigate this. He’s going to meet Bai Fengfei tonight, and I hope to find out something by then.”
“Oh!” She didn’t say anything until they arrived at He Mansion.
It was time for dinner. During the meal, Duan Mingyi was still sitting across from Yu Hongdou. She kept her eyes down while eating but couldn’t help but sneak glances at what Duan Mingyi and He Yunqin were doing. However, He Yunqin didn’t look at Duan Mingyi at all, and there wasn’t even a glance exchanged between them. This should have felt normal, but a little doubt had already crept into her mind, making her think they were being too obvious about it.
The two made their way back to the room after the meal. Just as they got to the stairs, a servant returned with the news that there was a call for He Yunqin.
He Yunqin found out that the caller wasn’t Wang Peter. He glanced at Yu Hongdou, but she headed straight to her room without giving him a chance to say anything.
Once she was in her room, she felt a little down and just collapsed onto the bed without changing her clothes. After a while, the door swung open, and He Yunqin walked toward the bed. He pulled out his wife from under the covers, and pinched her cheek, asking, “What’s going on with you?”
“Who were you just chatting with on the phone?” she swatted her hand away and questioned.
“Just a friend.”
“Which friend?”
He Yunqin fell silent.
She looked at him for a moment, then flashed a small smile and asked in a sarcastic tone, “No comment, huh? Could you please tell me why you visited Miss Qiu on the third floor? What was up with measuring my study with Peter Wang? Why did you refuse to get rid of that bicycle? And who was the German friend you called?”
“Yu Hongdou!”
Seeing the man’s dark face, Yu Hongdou felt a wave of sadness wash over her. “So you really can’t share any of this with me, huh?”
She pushed him away, got off the bed, and put on her shoes. “I need to talk to my mom about Chunyingli. I’m heading back to my parents’ place.”
‘Why is she going back to her parents’ house now? It is clear she was upset with me.’
“I thought we had talked about this before. You should at least trust your husband!” he pulled her gently and whispered.
‘Huh, Trust? We got married without love. That so-called trust is as fragile as paper. Husband?’ She viewed this marriage with such sincerity, and she wanted more than just a “husband.” Yet, when he was with her, he couldn’t even say “I love you” without hesitation.
Thinking that, Yu Hongdou glanced at the flowers on the dresser and tried her best to control her emotions. “Alright, since these matters involve your friends, I guess you have your reasons, and I shouldn’t pry too much. But what about Duan Mingyi? Why did you secretly accept gifts from her at the wedding? And where did that bouquet of flowers come from?” Her voice was choking up.
He Yunqin was taken aback.
‘He can’t answer, right? So it seems what Gu Yun said was true…’
Yu Hongdou was so angry that her chest was throbbing. She looked at him with tears in her eyes and said with dismay, “He Yunqin, I really should have gone to Beiping.”
Those words revealed that she regretted marrying him.
Upon hearing those words, He Yunqin’s face turned pale, and he laughed in anger. “There is nothing to hide about that woman! I will tell you everything now, Yu Hongdou. Before I met you, I had never been -“
He couldn’t finish his words as someone knocked on the door. “Second Young Master, Second Young Madam, the Gu Mansion called to ask Second Young Madam if their young miss is with Second Young Madam. Thay young miss has not returned home yet.”
