Chapter 16: Going Home

Going home was a happy thing for most people, but not for Su Yan at this moment.

It wasn’t that she didn’t miss her parents; she still didn’t have the guts to face them. After Xie Yu escaped from marriage, Su Yan chose to hide from everyone, leaving her parents to face everything alone.

What was even more irresponsible was that she had been hiding at Bai Xingfan’s place for the past few days and had also cut off contact with the outside world. Although she did it to reveal the pain, she forgot about her parents and completely ignored their feelings.

As they were getting closer to their house, Su Yan felt uneasy; her breathing became more and more rapid, and she was so nervous that her palms sweated.

Their family lived in a high-end community called “Golden Lanwan”. The main entrance of the community was connected by six tall white Roman columns. Behind the Roman columns was a lush garden, and there was a circular square with a fountain and a Cupid statue in the centre of it.

Having lived there for more than ten years, Su Yan was very familiar with the scenery in front of her house.

The moment the statue of Cupid came into view, she held her breath and asked her younger brother nervously, “Are our parents still angry?”

Su Zhan replied truthfully, “No, they aren’t; it was Grandma who was angry.”

Su Yan couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief, and then she snorted coldly. “What’s there to worry about? It’s too normal.”

Su Zhan, who was favoured by his grandmother, understood his sister’s words clearly, so he didn’t make any comments.

As only residents’ vehicles were allowed to enter the community, the sister and the brother had to get out of the vehicle at the entrance of the community, and five minutes later, they stood in front of their house.

While Su Zhan pressed his index finger to the fingerprint lock, Su Yan checked the time. “It’s still 9.32, so Dad should have gone to the company by now, right? There should be only mom and grandma at home.”

Su Yan felt a bit relieved after remembering that. ‘It’s good that my father is not at home. If my grandma scolds me, my mother will protect me. But if dad is here…’ 

Her father, Su Jianan, was a reliable and good man, but he was very traditional.

Su Jianan could bear hardship and withstand hard work; he was positive and motivated. Fortunately, he was down-to-earth and had a sense of responsibility. Even if he had become a company boss from a poor boy, he did not abandon his poor wife, who did share his burden and had never done anything to be sorry for her.

But he was a very traditional, good man.

For another example, her father was still a bit foolish and filial. Su Yan knew that her father loved her, but if her father’s love could be divided into three groups, she was the last one. With a “click”, the fingerprint lock was unlocked. Su Zhan pulled open the door and shouted from the top of his lungs as he walked into the room. “Is anyone there? We’re back!”

Su Yan followed her younger brother in, and before she had time to change her slippers, her parents rushed over. Both the parents looked at her from head to toe several times, as if they were looking at something lost and found again.

“Yanyan is back.” It was her father who spoke first, with distress and relief in his tone. “It’s good to be back; it’s good to be back…”

Her mother, Liu Xiang, also nodded. “That’s right, it’s good to be back.” But before she finished speaking, her eye circles turned red.

Su Yan didn’t expect her parents to worry this much without blaming her. Feeling guilty, her eyes turned red, and she cried out with tears in her eyes. “Dad, Mom.”

The mother’s tone was full of distress for her daughter.

After the siblings changed their slippers, the family of four went to the living room.

Ever since Su Yan entered the door, she hadn’t looked up. She was holding a walnut in her left hand and a walnut clip in her right hand, carefully peeling the walnuts out of their shells and putting them in a transparent, airtight jar next to them.

Only when Su Yan came into the living room with her parents and brother, did she glance at Su Yan with a frown. “Oh, isn’t this the great hero of our family? Are you finally willing to come home?”

Su Yan, who was familiar with her grandmother’s attitude towards her, didn’t take her words to heart and pretended that she didn’t hear them.

“Mom!”

Both of them were dissatisfied and even condemned.

The old woman became furious and abruptly tossed the walnut clip out of her hand. The iron clip hit the glass coffee table, making a dangerous muffled sound, but her anger was not directed at her precious grandson but at her daughter-in-law. “This little loser you gave birth to can’t win a man’s heart! Once more, Liu Xiang’s eyes were hot, and she glared angrily at old lady Su, asking, “How can you say that about Yanyan?”

The old lady, Su, snorted coldly. “There’s nothing wrong with her grievances! After living for so many years, you can’t even hold a man, useless trash!”

“Mom! Don’t say anything, please!” Su Jianan spoke at this point. Even though he had always followed the moral code that “the grace of childbearing was bigger than the sky,” this time he truly felt sorry for his daughter, so he no longer could bear up with his mother’s constant reprimands. “Yanyan is also feeling bad,” he said.

Su Zhan, who was no longer as patient as his father, said angrily to the old woman, “Why do you scold my sister so often? In this matter, is my sister to blame?”

Mrs. Su was speechless.

Su Yan did not speak. She actually wanted to get into a heated argument with this irrational old woman, but she was worn out. She knew it would only make her exhausted at the end.

“I’m going upstairs first.” After she finished speaking, she walked towards the stairs.

Two rooms were located on the first floor, and three rooms were located upstairs in their duplex house. Grandma Su lived on the first floor with her parents; she and her younger brother lived on the second floor, and the remaining room upstairs was kept as a guest room.

There were only two bathrooms upstairs: one was in the master bedroom, and the other two rooms had to share the remaining bathroom.

The master bedroom with a bathroom and cloakroom was given to Su Zhan because he was a son. Although it was unreasonable, Su’s family didn’t think that way.

Another thing was that, three years ago, their parents bought the younger brother a single-story villa of 200 square metres in a high-end community. Now that it had been renovated, they only bought her a single-story duplex of 120 square metres last year, and it still hadn’t been handed over to her.

Compared to most people, she was already very lucky. After all, she had a house at a young age. Although her parents also favour Su Zhan more than her, she didn’t feel very sad. After closing the door, Su Yan changed into her pyjamas first and then threw herself on the bed. Smelling the familiar smell, she felt relieved but also tired at the same time.

After an unknown amount of time, there was a sudden knock on the door. “Yanyan? What are you doing?”

It was her mother’s voice, with a cautious tone, as if she was afraid of irritating her.

“Nothing.” Su Yan sat up from the bed at once, put on her slippers, and opened the door for her mother. “What’s the matter?”

After entering the room, Liu Xiang didn’t talk right away and shut the door. Su Yan was dragged inside the room by the arm after the door was once again locked.

Su Yan was puzzled by her mother’s sudden change in demeanour and perplexing query. “What’s wrong with you?”

Liu Xiang pursed her lips, then stared at her seriously and asked in a low voice, “You and Xie Yu, is that done?”

‘That?’ What is that?’ 

Su Yan was a little confused. “What?”

Liu Xiang was a little anxious, and her face was a little red. “Is it just that… have you done that thing?”

Su Yan was stunned for a moment, and when she understood her mother’s question, her face turned red. ” No!”

After hearing her daughter’s answer, Liu Xiang was not relieved and asked again, “Really?”

In reality, her husband was also interested in knowing the answer to this question, but he decided to let her inquire because he felt too embarrassed to approach his daughter personally.

“Okay, okay!” Su Yan said, “Mom, is there anything else to ask? If not, I want to be alone.”

Liu Xiang: “Wait…!”

Su Yan: “What’s the matter?”

Liu Xiang: “Which friend’s house did you live in these days? Male or female? What does your friend do? Even given your brother a bear? Does your friend run a zoo?”

Su Yan: “…”
