Chapter 33.1 – Cub

After his brother went away, Bai Xinglan moved closer and said to Su Yan and Yao Anan, “The party hasn’t begun yet; let’s find a place to sit first.”

“Okay.” Su Yan couldn’t stop herself from looking at Bai Xingfan and the woman, and she couldn’t help but ask, “Is she the main character today?”

“Yes. She is called Sister Tongtong,” Bai Xinglan said to Su Yan. “My brother is probably going to sign a contract with her.”

Su Yan reacted with surprise by saying, “Oh.”

After listening to Bai Xinglan’s explanation, Yao Anan whispered to her friend. “Then you have no need to worry. They are just going to sign a contract.”

The woman’s closest friend was someone who knew her very well.

Su Yan’s face turned red, and she wouldn’t admit it. “I didn’t.”

Yao Anan didn’t say anything and didn’t seem bothered to hear her friend’s words.

Su Yan: ‘But the way you look at me says the opposite.’

Later, both of them went with Bai Xinglan to find a table near the pond, and Su Yan decided to sit facing the pond.
After she sat down, she looked up and quickly looked at the corridor across from her. She saw Bai Xingfan and the woman walking into a small, two-story building together.

Lights were turned on upstairs and downstairs, and the cosy yellow light shone through the glass and lit up the crisscrossed wooden window frames.

“Sister Yanyan, have some tea.” Bai Xinglan gave Su Yan a blue and white cup filled with tea.

Su Yan quickly looked at the cup of tea and said, “Thanks.” Then she hurriedly picked up the cup of tea and took a sip, as if trying to hide something.

When she placed the teacup on the table, she suddenly saw that the water in the pond was moving. She looked in the direction where the water was coming from, but her view was blocked by a wooden fence door inlaid on a stone wall. She wanted to see it, but it was very dark. She couldn’t see things well; she just saw the basic shape of the mountain top.

She asked Bai Xinglan, “Does the water come from the top of the mountain?”

Bai Xinglan replied, “Yes, the highest point of the mountain is where the water starts, and it goes all the way down to the lowest point of the mountain, passing through the four outdoor areas.”

Su Yan was once again curious and asked, “Why are they using a wooden door to block the waterway?”

Bai Xinglan said again, “You can only be on top of the water, not underneath it.”

Yao Anan saw two wooden fence gates at the front and back. She wondered why there were two gates. “Maybe they’re to show that there is water under the gate.”

Bai Xinglan: “I’m not sure, but it looks like it’s used to light the lantern in the sky.”

Su Yan and Yao Anan both asked at the same time, “Which lantern are you referring to?”

Bai Xinglan said that the sky lantern was a special service offered by Shan Yinxuan, which was considered very modern and innovative.

Su Yan was even more curious and wanted to know how advanced it was.
Bai Xinglan said, “It’s really advanced; I haven’t seen anyone ordering it before.”

Su Yan: “???”

Yao Anan asked, “Is it because the price is high?”

Bai Xinglan: “The price must be expensive. The sky lanterns must be lit in the water, and the lanterns will follow the water and flow through the four courtyards, and guests in other courtyards will be disturbed. So there is a rule that whoever lights the sky lantern has to book the whole clubhouse.”
Su Yan was very surprised and asked, “All four courtyards?”

Bai Xinglan: “Yes.”

Both Su Yan and Yao Anan were very surprised, and both of them were thinking the same. ‘The cost of booking one pavilion is very expensive, and who would have money to book the whole hotel? We can’t think even in our dreams. We don’t really know the rich world well.’

Bai Xingfan said that the reason why not many guests lit the sky lanterns was because it was disrespectful to the host of the banquet. Only if the host wanted to light them would it happen. “But I have never seen that happen before.”

Su Yan agreed with Bai Xinglan. Because the person who came to the banquet was a guest, lighting the sky lantern would be like stealing the spotlight from the host. It was neither polite nor following the rules.
However, she still had a small question. “Why should the sky lantern be placed in the water if it is meant to fly in the sky?”

Yao Anan was also very surprised. She suggested, “Why don’t we call it a river lantern instead?”

Bai Xinglan raised his hands and said, “I’m not sure, but maybe it’s because real sky lanterns are bad for the environment and can cause disasters in the mountains.”

‘Sounds reasonable.’ Both the friends thought.
