Yan Yan - Chapter 56

Chapter 56
He was still very determined.
Su Yan quietly sighed. She didn’t want to argue with him right now and just said, “Don’t tell my parents about the divorce; I don’t want to cause them any problems.” Then she hung up the phone.
Su Yun, her mother, and her brother reached the hospital after thirty minutes.
Bai Xingfan was already there when they arrived, and they all met at the front of the hospital.
The sky was dark, but the lights in front of the hospital were bright.
Bai Xingfan was wearing a black suit with a grey coat, a black tie, and a white shirt. The bright light shone on his handsome face.
Su Yan stopped her steps.
They hadn’t seen each other for a long time—almost a month.
When she saw him, she felt a little shocked. She once thought they would only meet at the Civil Affairs Bureau and then never see each other again. But life was unpredictable, and no one could guess what would happen.
Bai Xingfan also looked closely at Su Yan, with a deep look in his eyes.
On her way to the hospital, Su Yan had already told her mom and brother that Bai Xingfan would be there. So when Liu Xiang and Su Zhan saw him, they were not surprised.
Su Zhan called out “brother-in-law” happily.
Bai Xingfan gave a small nod and showed a little smile on his tired face as he said, “Hello.”
Liu Xiang sighed and said it with a helpless smile. “I didn’t expect this situation to come suddenly. Otherwise, we will not disturb you. You must be tired of coming outside the town.”
Hearing her mother’s words, Su Yan felt worried and looked at Bai Xingfan anxiously because she forgot to tell him the lie she made up to her mother.
However, Bai Xingfan quickly understood what Su Yan was trying to express with her eyes. He looked down and said, “Sorry, I should have come back last night.”
Su Yan felt better right away because Bai Xingfan acted fast.
Liu Xiang sighed and said, “It’s not your fault. No one expected the old lady to go suddenly. Don’t blame yourself.” She also saw that her son-in-law looked tired, and she felt sorry for him. “Are you working a lot right now? Are you feeling tired?”
Bai Xingfan said, “It’s fine.”
Liu Xiang: “I don’t know what will happen tonight. But the younger ones don’t have to stay up all night. First, let’s go and have a look, and then you take Yanyan and Xiao Zhan home to get some rest. The living should not be overwhelmed by the dead.
Even though this was a critical situation, she didn’t want her children to suffer because of it.
Bai Xingfan was also concerned about Su Yan’s health. She had just lost a baby and was still not feeling well, so he said “Okay” without really thinking about it.
Su Yan wasn’t sure and asked, “Is this okay? What about you and my dad?”
Liu Xiang: “There is a place to rest at the funeral house. When we are tired, we will take turns working with your uncle and the others.”
Su Yan was very concerned. She asked, “You still expect them to work shifts with us? Maybe they will leave earlier than us.”
Su Zhan totally agreed. “I feel the same way.”
Liu Xiang felt like she had no power to change the situation. She wondered what else they could do if the people who were supposed to watch over the old lady didn’t want to. She also knew her brother-in-law and sister-in-law couldn’t be relied on, so she didn’t have any hope in them. She also felt like she and her husband couldn’t count on them either. “If they want to leave, then let them leave. Your dad and I will take turns working.”
Su Yan felt sorry for her parents and was reluctant to keep them up all night. They were old, and their health was also important. “How about this? I’ll stay and let Xingfan take Xiaozhan home. I can still watch for you.”
Before Liu Xiang and Bai Xingfan could object, Su Zhan preemptively objected to Su Yan’s proposal. “How can I do that? I’ll stay and let my brother-in-law take you home.” He sighed again. “Hey, actually, I think I should stay with my grandma; she was nice to me when she was alive.”
Although he didn’t like Grandma’s attitude towards his mother and sister, he also knew that the old lady treated him sincerely. So he couldn’t be a heartless white-eyed wolf like his uncle and aunt, no matter what.
[Tl: 白眼狼 (bái yǎn láng)—”white-eyed wolf” used to describe a selfish, cold-hearted, and cruel person.]
“You can stay if you want. Then you just accompany your father.” Liu Xiang had no objection to her son’s decision. After all, boys were rough-skinned and thick-skinned. However, her attitude towards Su Yan remained unchanged. “Yanyan followed Xingfan home.”
Su Yan didn’t accept it. “You all stayed; how can I go home at ease?”
Liu Xiang: “Isn’t your brother with us?”
Su Zhan: “That’s right. I’m twenty-one; I’m not a two-year-old child.”
Su Yan was still worried, but at this moment, Bai Xingfan suddenly said, “Don’t worry, I’ll send you home tonight, and then I’ll come back to the funeral home to watch for you.”
Su Yan was stunned, and her first reaction was to refuse. “No need; I can do it myself.”
They were already divorced, and she didn’t want to trouble him so much.
Bai Xingfan reiterated this again. “We are husband and wife.” He also had to remind her, “You need a good rest now.”
Su Yan understood that Bai Xingfan was worried about her health. But she didn’t want to accept his kindness. As she was going to reject his offer, Liu Xiang opened her mouth.
“You two go home. There are so many people to look after those matters. Go home and have a good night’s rest; your health is important.” She muttered again, “The place in the funeral home is bad for you.”
Su Yan didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “Mom, can you stop being so superstitious?”
Liu Xiang: “It’s still cold in the winter night. Can you stand it? What should you do if your body freezes? You don’t want any children?”
Su Yan did not tell her family about her pregnancy and miscarriage.
The word “child” was like a sharp thorn, piercing straight into her heart. The feeling she took much effort to forget came out and quickly spread throughout her body.
Her limbs froze at the same time, and she felt she couldn’t breathe.
Others might not notice anything, but Bai Xingfan clearly noticed Su Yan’s strangeness.
He knew how Su Yan felt about their lost child. He couldn’t talk about it in this situation, so he immediately cut off the topic. “Don’t worry, I will definitely take her home and come back in the evening.”
Liu Xiang trusted her son-in-law very much. “Then it’s settled. Let’s go; there are still more things to do,” she said to Su Zhan.
After she finished speaking, she took the first step into the hospital, and Su Zhan followed his mother closely.
However, Su Yan couldn’t move her body. She stood there like a statue.
Bai Xingfan was so distressed that he tried to hold Su Yan’s hand, but she quickly avoided him.
Su Yan put both hands behind her at the same time and muttered through gritted teeth, “Don’t touch me.”
Although she was taking medication, this time she was unable to control her emotions.
Bai Xingfan’s arm froze in the air, and after a moment of solidification, he lowered his hand feebly. “Okay, I won’t touch you,” he said helplessly.
“Don’t think that I let you come here means that I have forgiven you. I won’t; I will never forgive you in my life.” Su Yan was very afraid that she would become a bird in a cage again.
She began to reiterate nervously and incessantly. “I want to divorce you; I must divorce you!”
Her mental state was like a dam that had just been repaired. Suddenly there was a small leakage, and if it was not repaired quickly, the dam would burst sooner or later. If she could no longer stop the flood of emotions, she would definitely collapse completely.
Fearing that she would lose control once more, Bai Xingfan comforted her quickly. “Don’t worry, I will definitely divorce you. I swear to you that I will never force you to do anything again,” he reassured her in a forceful voice.
Su Yan cast a sceptical glance at him, showing little faith in him. “Really?” she asked. She now had a child’s insecure appearance.
Bai Xingfan said firmly, “It’s absolutely true.” Even if he didn’t want to lose her or get divorced, he had to take care of her feelings.
Su Yan’s mood finally stabilised.
She looked at Bai Xingfan, took a few long breaths, turned around, and entered the hospital.
Bai Xingfan experienced a profound sensation of helplessness once more.
He let her leave, but he never considered parting ways with her.
He was at a loss as to how to win her back, though.
