Everyone was caught off guard as the old lady left without warning.

Su Yan and her family became very busy early in the morning. Su Yan helped her mother clean the old lady’s body. Su Jianan settled things at the hospital.

Bai Xingfan took Su Zhan out of the hospital and looked for funeral houses on the street.

After Su Yan’s family did everything, Su Jianye and Chen Baihui came.

Their daughter, who was the old lady’s favourite granddaughter, Su Qian, didn’t come, but Su Yan and her family didn’t inquire about her. They knew what answer they would get: “Su Qian is a civil servant, and she has to go to work.”

This time, Su Jianan was really let down by his younger brother and sister-in-law, and he didn’t even care why they were so late.

Nevertheless, even though Su Jianye and Chen Baihui arrived late, they had a lot of energy. They started crying and ran to the hospital bed, where the dead body was placed. Then, they both knelt on the floor and started yelling loudly. “My mother, my mother… just going away like this… my mother!”

The hallway was filled with their cries.

Looking at the sense in front of them, Su Yan and Su Zhan were speechless and silently looked at each other. 

Su Jianan and Liu Xiang knew the middle-aged couple was acting, so they didn’t try to convince them. They just watched them act without caring.

Su Jianye and Chen Baihui cried for a while, but when they saw that no one was trying to comfort them, they stopped. They didn’t want to waste their energy on the dead old woman, so they slowly stopped making loud noises and stood up from the ground. 

Su Jianye took a deep breath and gazed sadly at Su Jianan and Liu Xiang. He said, “Our mom passed away so suddenly.”

Chen Baihui: “I can’t believe it at all.”

Su Jian’an and Liu Xiang still refused to talk to them.

Upon hearing that, Su Yan couldn’t help but say, “If uncle and aunt hadn’t left last night, maybe you would have seen grandma for the last time.”

Chen Baihui replied hastily, “Actually, we didn’t want to go, but our Qianqian was at home alone, and we are worried about her.” She sighed and continued her babbling. “You know that our Qianqian has poor self-care ability. If we don’t go home, she will be scared to sleep.”

Su Jianye agreed with his wife and said, “Yes, Qianqian is timid and needs us.”

Su Yan was very mad to hear that. She was going to scold them, but Bai Xingfan said first, “We understood that. So today you can fulfil your last duty by guarding our grandmother’s body for the last time.”

Su Jianye and Chen Baihui were both surprised at the same time and asked, “Do we still need to continue guarding her body?”

Su Yan said angrily, “Otherwise? This is a rule, and you have to follow it. Unless you don’t care about the grandmother, you can say no.”

Bai Xingfan agreed with her and said, “If uncle and aunt miss grandma a lot, they shouldn’t say no, right?”

Chen Baihui and Su Jianye realised they were tricked by the young couple, and they were really mad about it. However, they couldn’t say no.

Chen Baihui said while pondering for a few seconds, “We want to guard the old lady, but I’m not worried about Qianqian being home alone.” She sounded embarrassed.

Su Jianye said, “Yes, Qianqian is timid.”

Bai Xingfan said calmly, “Then she can come here and guard the body with you too. I think she will say yes.”

Su Yan opened her eyes wider, looked at the man next to her, and suddenly realised: that the wicked have their own grind. 

Their family hardly argued with the uncle and aunt because they were too nice. Only someone as bad as Bai Xingfan could be so immoral and powerful that he could control them.

Chen Baihui quickly said, “We can’t do that. She is a civil servant, and she has to go to work tomorrow. She can’t stay up late.”

Bai Xingfan didn’t change his mind and said, “Then she can only stay at home alone.”

Su Zhan couldn’t stop complaining. “Can you believe that people in their twenties are too scared to spend the night at home alone?”

Chen Baihui got mad and raised her eyebrows. She asked, “Why do we have to guard the spirit? What about your family?”

Just as Su Yan was going to say something in disagreement, Bai Xingfan suddenly took hold of her wrist and gestured for her to stay calm. Su Yan had to stop talking for a little while.

“Of course, we won’t forget about the old lady, but we have to focus on people doing their jobs. You can choose to help by contributing money. The old lady’s medical bills are about 20,000 yuan.” Bai Xingfan spoke calmly without changing his expression. “If you don’t want to stay here tonight, you can pay half of the bill.”

Money was the life of Su Jianye and his wife. Taking money out of his pocket was more painful than cutting a kidney, let alone 10,000 yuan.

Chen Baihui looked unconvinced. “How could it be so expensive? Isn’t it just for one night?”

In fact, Bai Xingfan didn’t know how much money Su Yan’s family had spent because he didn’t settle the bill. He just said it casually to scare them.

In fact, the real cost was less than 5,000 yuan, but Su Jianan didn’t intend to expose his son-in-law. “Why is it impossible? Medical treatments are not free!” he said angrily. 

Su Yan finally found an opportunity to interject. “Yes!” Although she only said one word, it was enough to silence the cunning couple.

Chen Baihui was silent.

Su Jianye was also speechless.

At this time, Bai Xingfan opened his mouth again and made a final decision. “Since my uncle and aunt have no opinion, the matter of guarding the spirit will be decided.” He sighed softly again and said in a deep voice, “Grandma favoured you during her lifetime. Come watch for grandma, and her spirit in heaven will surely find comfort.”

Su Yan suddenly wanted to laugh. But the old lady’s body was still lying in the room, so she had to hold on to her laughter.

After everything was settled in the hospital, the old lady’s body was transported to the funeral home.

Su Yanan and Liu Xiang got into the hearse, and Su Jianye and Chen Baihui drove their car to the funeral home.

Bai Xingfan drove Su Yan and Su Zhan with him.
