Yan Yan - Chapter 62.2

Chapter 62.2
Su Yan slept soundly in Bai Xingfan’s arms.
Director Sun, who couldn’t sleep, looked at Bai Xingfan, who was looking at Su Yan with a gentle expression on his face. “I always thought she was a very strong little girl,” she whispered to Bai Xingfan, who was sitting next to her. “We faced the snow to find shelter in the mountains, and she was always optimistic before you came. She was constantly in the lead at that time; I believed she was a genius since she remained calmer than anybody else, neither panicked nor chaotic, and she had been helping me keep the army’s morale up while everyone else was freaking out that they would be stuck in the mountains. She was fearless before, but who knew she would cry as soon as you showed up?”
“She wasn’t very brave at first,” Bai Xingfan said, grinning but speaking softly as he focused on Su Yan. “But she has always been strong.”
Emotionally speaking, Director Sun stated, “Children do not require strength; adults do. Meeting a partner who has the ability to transform oneself from an adult into a kid is also a blessing that lasts for three lifetimes.”
“It’s my luck to meet her, and I am the lucky one for three lifetimes.” Once more, he made fun of himself, saying, “She was unlucky to meet me.”
Since he was a little child, he had been living in a cage. He had shackles all over him. He was never able to choose his life. A door to the cramped cage was opened, letting in a stream of sunlight as he met her.
He was scared that she wouldn’t want to go with him, so he pushed her into a bird cage and made her stay with him all the time because he really liked her.
She brought him sunshine, but he slaughtered their children and took away her freedom.
She wouldn’t have suffered as much as if she hadn’t gone to that old town, hadn’t stood on that bridge, and hadn’t been seen by him two years ago.
Su Yan slept soundly and even had a dream.
A dream incarnated as a nightingale.
In her dream, she flew out of a massive rose-colored bird cage and flew over the great world, travelling farther and farther until she unexpectedly came upon a strong storm and snow, which blew her away once more. When I returned, there were just roses remaining, and the bird cage had vanished.
Her expression turned suddenly blank as she folded her wings, stood atop one of the roses, craned her neck, and gazed up at the wide blue sky.
“The snow stopped! Snow stopped!”
Su Yan was abruptly awakened from her dream by someone’s shouting, and she opened her eyes.
The others awoke from their sleep as well. Rising from the floor or the box, they dashed towards the door or windows. All of them were thrilled to see the brilliant sun outside the house.
“It really stopped!”
“We’ll be saved in no time!”
“I know I will not die!”
Though Su Yan was eager to see it as well, she noticed something was off as soon as she stood up—Bai Xingfan’s body was weakly pressing on her.
His body slumped to the ground as she stood up, and she quickly threw her arms around him.
It was then that she noticed his reddish pink cheeks, his closed eyes, and his complete lack of awareness of his surroundings.
She erupted into a frenzy, blurting out, “Husband!”
Bai Xingfan continued to tightly close his eyes indifferently.
Su Yan yelled, “Husband!” once again as her eyes reddened.
The voice was shaking with an unfathomable panic, but the second cry was even louder than the first.
The majority of people gave her worried looks. This shout also woke up Director Sun, who had not yet moved from her sleep. As soon as she opened her eyes and took in the scene, she blurted out, “So red? True? Is he not feverish?”
When Su Yan eventually regained consciousness, tears started to fill her eyes as she stretched out and caressed his heated forehead.
“Who has antipyretics?” Director Sun yelled at everyone as she got up from the box.
“Yes! I have,” The logistics department team leader replied while he looked through his bag. “It was specially prepared before going out to the field.” He gave Su Yan the antipyretic and cold medication.
Once more, Su Yan exclaimed, “Husband! Husband!”
When Bai Xingfan did finally react, he scowled a little and then opened his eyes and gave a hard cough.
Su Yan felt helpless.
After coughing violently, he stumbled to consciousness.
Seeing the weakness and blankness in his eyes, Su Yan felt like her heart was picked by thousands of needles. “Husband…”
Seeing Su Yan was crying hard, Bai Xingfan asked in a panic, “What’s wrong?” His voice was very raspy, and he was trying to sit up straight even though his head was aching hard. Suddenly a sharp pain came from his ribs, causing him to fail to get up, grit his teeth, and let out a groan.
Su Yan cried and said, “You have a fever, and you fainted.”
Bai Xingfan breathed a sigh of relief, then said, “I’m fine.”
‘You are sick. How could you say you are fine?’ Tears were streaming down Su Yan’s face, but she knew she had no time to cry. She wiped her tears and helped Bai Xingfan lean on the wall. “I’m going to boil some water,” she said after she got up.
She gave him pills and poured a cup of hot water once the water boiled.
A bag of snow was brought back in a plastic bag by someone, who then compacted it to create a basic ice pack.
Su Yan used her gloves to cram an ice pack against Bai Xingfan’s forehead in an attempt to bring his body temperature down.
Su Yan was relieved that his body was no longer as hot after around thirty minutes, but the medication’s effects were short-lived as his body temperature quickly rose up. Su Yan felt her heart sink after that.
She repeatedly went in and out to change the ice pack while she continued to pray in her heart.
However, the rescue squad could not have arrived so soon because of how thick the snow was in the mountains.
They waited from early morning until sunset before the team came to rescue.
At that time, Bai Xingfan had just finished taking the medicine once. His body temperature finally dropped a little.
He decisively rejected Su Yan’s proposal to let him lie down on a stretcher. He held Su Yan’s hand and accompanied her down the mountain.
The way down the mountain was more difficult than going up the mountain.
When they went up the mountain, they climbed for more than three hours. This time they followed the rescue team down the mountain, and the time more than doubled—they started to climb down the mountain after 5 o’clock in the afternoon, but they couldn’t go to the bottom of the mountain until 4 o’clock in the morning the next day.
The night sky was dark as ink, but everyone’s mood was bright as bright stars.
They were saved!
Many ambulances were parked at the entrance of the scenic spot. If there were injured people, they would be taken directly to the closest hospital.
Su Yan wanted to take Bai Xingfan straight to the ambulance because the crowd was chaotic, but Bai Xingfan interrupted her by saying, “I’m a little thirsty now; can you bring me a cup of hot water? I am able to visit the doctor on my own.”
Although his face was quite pale and appeared feeble, it appeared that the fever had receded and his cheeks were no longer scarlet.
“How about I take you to the ambulance first?” Su Yan asked, frightened.
With a small sigh, Bai Xingfan said, “But I really want to drink water.”
“Okay then… Go see the doctor first; I’ll be right back,” pleaded Su Yan. She then bolted in the direction of the tourist information centre.
With a helpless look, Bai Xingfan lifted the corners of his mouth.
‘What a resilient cub.’
He knew he wouldn’t be able to hold anymore, and the last thing he wanted was to let her see how he fell.
Bai Xingfan’s physical stamina ran out the instant Su Yan raced inside the service station, and he was no longer able to sustain his towering frame. He dropped abruptly to the ground, unconscious, like a mountain collapsing.
