Chapter 63.2 – Growing Up
She had a dream that she was unable to wake up from, and it kept repeating the same scene: the doctor was asking her to sign an informed permission form in front of the operating room door.
When she was about to sign her name in the family column in the form, the doctor’s cold voice swept over her ears. “Are you a family member?”
She panicked and replied repeatedly. “I am, I am!”
She was brutally exposed by the doctor, who said, “You are not; you are divorced, so you are not qualified to sign for him.”
Without the signature, the operation wouldn’t be carried out, and his life would be in danger.
She sobbed in fear and repeated, “No, it’s not like this,” shaking her head. “I am his wife, and we are still together.”
“You are divorced.”
“You are not a family member.”
“You are not qualified to sign him.”
These three phrases, as if they were a continual reminder to her, were repeated by the doctor in her dream. “It didn’t matter if he lived or died; it didn’t matter to you.”
She was powerless and had no choice but to cry and beg the doctor to let her sign, but the doctor would not listen.
She plunged into a nightmare, feeling this hopelessness and agony over time as the dream came and went.
“Yan Yan! Yan Yan!”
After a period of time, Su Yan’s nightmare was broken by her mother’s voice. She woke up crying, so when she opened her eyes immediately, her eyesight was blurry.
Sitting next to the bed, Liu Xiang had a distressed expression in her red eyes.
She comforted her daughter, wiping away the tears and perspiration with a white towel while saying, “Don’t cry; Mom is here.”
Su Yan wasn’t prepared to see her mom. She looked at Liu Xiang blankly for a few seconds before she had an idea. She got up from the bed, raised the quilt, and prepared to go. In a panic, she exclaimed, “I want to go. I want to go to Xingfan!”
“Take care of yourself first!” Pressing Su Yan’s shoulders quickly, Liu Xiang said, “Xingfan is fine; he’s already awake!”
Su Yan was taken aback and asked her mother, “Really?” with tears in her eyes.
“Why am I lying to you?” With a hopeless sigh, Liu Xiang said, “Your father and your in-laws have all gone to see him; they will return later. Ask them when they return if you don’t think I’m telling the truth.”
Su Yan’s thoughts became slightly disoriented, making it difficult for her to understand the current state of affairs. “Has Xingfan come out of the ICU?”
“No, how can it be so fast?” Once again sighing, Liu Xiang said, “It’s just out of danger now, and doctors have to observe him for a few more days.”
Su Yan’s eyes became crimson. “I want…to see him…” She sobbed.
Helpless Liu Xiang said, “The visiting time will pass when you run from this building to that building. It will be the same if you go tomorrow; maybe he will be in better condition tomorrow.” She reassured her daughter once again.
Su Yan could only listen to her mother. She silently laid back on the bed with an uneasy heart.
Liu Xiang went to call the nurse as the hanging saline bottle was about to come to an end.
“What’s wrong with me?” Su Yan enquired when the nurse left with the empty hanging bottle.
“You were overstretched and sad, and you passed out,” Liu Xiang groaned.
Su Yan: “How long have I been sleeping?”
Liu Xiang looked at her daughter with lingering fear and replied, “It’s been a whole day. The four of us have been unable to contact you, and we were scared to death. We arrived here in the middle of the night last night. As a result, one of you was in the ICU and the other was in the inpatient department. We almost had a heart attack.”
Su Yan felt down hearing they had worried their parents. Suppressing the sob that was going to escape from her mouth, she asked, “How did you get here?”
The high-speed train from Dongfu to Nandao may have been suspended due to the heavy snowfall, so it would be difficult to get here.
Liu Xiang: “Driving here overnight, we were stuck on the expressway for a whole day.”
Su Yan felt distressed again, crying and saying to her mother, “I’m sorry, I made you worry.”
Liu Xiang waved her hand hastily after her eyes lit up, saying, “What, sorry? As long as you two are fine, it’s okay.”
‘Okay? If they knew we were divorced, would it be the same?’ Su Yan thought of that dream again. Although, in reality, she successfully signed the operation informed letter, it did not change the fact that they divorced.
Guilt filled her heart again.
Her life was a mess, but her parents just wanted the best for their kids.
After the ward door was forced open ten minutes later, her father Su Jianan entered first, followed by Bai Xingfan’s father Bai Ruming and his mother Jiang Lin.
Su Yan was the first to yell, “Dad, Dad, Mom.”
When the three old people saw that Su Yan was awake, they immediately gathered around the bedside.
Su Jianan’s hair on the temples had already turned grey, and he looked at his daughter with a distressed look in his eyes. “Do you feel better?”
Su Yan nodded. “I just finished receiving the saline water, and it’s much better.” Then she immediately asked, “How is Xingfan?”
“Wake up, don’t worry!” This time, the voice was Jiang Lin, saying, “You don’t have to worry about him; he is fine.”
Bai Ruming also stated, “He is well taken care of. You can’t treat yourself badly; you have to take good care of your body.”
Su Yan felt more guilty when Bai Ruming and Jiang Lin treated her like this.
Their son was Bai Xingfan, and she was the one who was responsible for this incident.
She sobbed while saying, “I’m sorry. He…he was injured because of me.”
Jiang Lin didn’t expect her daughter-in-law to apologise to them, so she immediately said, “Yan Yan, you can’t think that way. He is your husband. It’s right to save you. We will never blame you for this.”
“That’s right. Yan Yan, you don’t need to say sorry to us, and you don’t need to blame yourself.” Then Bai Ruming started educating his daughter-in-law. “Since he had gone through that to save you, it shows how much he likes you. He did what a husband should do, so you don’t need to balm yourself. And if you were stuck at the mountain and he didn’t do anything to save you, he would never be able to get rid of his guilt.”
Naturally, neither Bai Ruming nor Jiang Lin placed the blame on her, but Su Yan’s shame increased as she realised that she and Bai Xingfan were no longer husband and wife and that she was unfit to enjoy such a treatment from both Bai Xingfan and her former in-laws.
Have a nice day!
