Chapter 64.1 – Be Good
Bai Xingfan was transferred from the ICU to the general ward one week later.
Su Yan gave up her work as a scriptwriter in order to devote all of her time to caring for Bai Xingfan.
South Island transportation that was disrupted due to the snowstorm was restored, so Su Jianan and Bai Ruming, who were busy with work, returned to Dongfu first, and then Su Zhan and Bai Xinglan came.
They met by coincidence after getting off the high-speed train and then took a taxi to the hospital while yelling at each other the entire way. They arrived here as soon as the winter vacation began, and they did so at the same time. No one had discussed their plans beforehand.
For sake of peace and quiet, Bai Xingfan resided in a single room, but the benefit of having a single room was completely destroyed when Su Zhan and Bai Xinglan moved in.
When Bai Xinglan entered the room and saw his brother, who was wearing a pale blue medical gown and was laying on the bed, his eyes lit up. Just as Su Zhan was ready to address him as “brother-in-law,” Bai Xinglan let out a sorrowful cry, “Brother!!!!”
Su Zhan: “…”
The next second, Bai Xinglan ran to the bedside like a gust of wind and started crying loudly. “Brother! How did you become like this? Am I too late?”
Bai Xingfan: “…”
Su Yan: “…”
Jiang Lin sighed helplessly while scolding her younger son. “What nonsense are you talking about? Your brother is fine!”
“I mean, I should have come earlier,” Bai Xinglan exclaimed, breaking down in tears. “This is how my brother is, and I did complete the last exam.”
Su Zhan: ‘You dumbass, I finished my last tests too!’
Without knowing if to laugh or cry, Bai Xingfan said, “Of course taking the final exam is more important.”
Su Yan also consoled him by saying, “Your brother is fine, but if you don’t take the final exam, you will be in big trouble next semester.”
Taking a deep breath, Bai Xinglan said, “Fortunately, you are okay; otherwise, I don’t know what to do.”
With a smile on his face, Bai Xingfan remarked, “I’m not going to die. I have fifty more years to keep you under my grasp.”
Su Yan frowned as she estimated the time and looked at him. “Less than eighty?” she asked.
Bai Xingfan: “…”
Seeing he was not going to reply, Su Yan asked angrily, “You don’t want to grow old with me?”
Bai Xingfan: “…”
Upon hearing her daughter’s words, Liu Xiang scolded Su Yan in her heart. ‘How could she behave like this in front of her mother-in-law?’ With a straight face, she abruptly shoved Su Yan’s shoulder and asked, “What are you talking about? That was not at all what Xinglan meant.”
Jiang Lin looked at her son with a condemning look on her face. “You can’t even say that. You have to live happily with Yanyan forever.”
“That’s right!” Su Yan had a pouty, tiny mouth and an unhappy expression on her face.
With a pitiful look, Bai Xingfan replied, “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said that. Please forgive me, my wife.”
When Su Yan heard the words “my dear wife,” she raised her eyelids unhappily, as if saying to him, Who allowed you to call me wife?
Ignoring Su Yan’s unhappy expression, Bai Xingfan put her hand on the bed and gently coaxed her, saying, “Next time, be careful what you say.”
Su Yan wanted to take her hand away because she felt a bit ashamed in front of her family. Nevertheless, because she was holding it too hard, she tried twice and failed. Then her face reddened and she gave him a sneer.
Liu Xiang and Jiang Lin smiled at each other, realising that the two children needed some private space, so they began to call the young boys to leave the ward together.
Liu Xiang: “Xiaozhan, Lanlan, let’s go and have some food.”
Su Zhan certainly understood what his mother meant—’don’t stay here and be a light bulb’—and he walked decisively towards the ward door.
But Bai Xinglan didn’t understand that at all and said firmly, “I want to stay and accompany my brother!”
Jiang Lin was helpless. “Go eat first, and come back after dinner. Your brother can’t run away!”
Bai Xinglan was still not understanding when she said, “My sister-in-law will be too exhausted to take care of my brother, so I’ll stay with my brother.”
Su Yan: “…”
With a quiet sigh, Bai Xingfan turned to face his brother and said, “I want to talk to your sister-in-law about my deepest feelings. Are you certain you want to listen?”
Su Yan’s face flushed red in an instant, and she gave the man an angry look.
Bai Xinglan became aware of something abruptly. He gently reminded his brother, despite his embarrassment and shame. “Given your current physical condition, emmmm, it seems that you are not suitable for being affectionate.”
Bai Xingfan: “…
Su Yan: “…”
“Shut up!” Su Zhan was at his wits’ end. Taking two strides forward, he seized Bai Xinglan by the neck and dragged him violently out of the ward.
After grinning and shaking her head, Liu Xiang followed the two children.
It was Jiang Lin who departed last. She turned to face Bai Xingfan.
“I’m sorry for making you worry,” out of nowhere Bai Xingfan said.
Jiang Lin stopped dead in her tracks and gave her son a disbelieving look.
Bai Xingfan parted his thin lips to speak, but he was unable to do so. Actually, he was at a loss on how to communicate his emotions to his mother. He hesitated for a moment and then grudgingly modified his intended statement to, “You also go and eat.”
Su Yan looked at the man, disbelievable. ‘What are you doing? What a strange person!’
Jiang Lin was startled for a moment, then lowered her eyes and muttered, “Okay.”
Su Yan could see right through her mother-in-law’s countenance the lost emotion. So she expressed what Bai Xingfan was unable to say, feeling a little upset. “He wants to tell you that he doesn’t blame you anymore, and you don’t have to blame yourself anymore. He cherishes you.”
Bai Xingfan’s whole body stiffened, and his usually calm and confident expression revealed the embarrassment and shame that only a child could have.
In an instant, Jiang Lin’s eyes were red, and she started to cry, but she still grinned broadly and kept nodding, saying, “I know, I understand!”
She then quickly exited the ward after using her hands to wipe away her tears.
It seemed as though a great weight had been lifted off her shoulders; she had not felt so at ease in a long time.
Have a nice day!
