Yan Yan - Chapter 71

Chapter 71 – Extra 5
The whole family was over the moon after discovering that Su Yan was pregnant. Among them, the happiest person was the soon-to-be father.
From the day they got the good news, Bai Xingfan couldn’t stop smiling; his lips were always turned up in a happy grin, and his eyes sparkled with joy.
Su Yan was thrilled too, but her excitement didn’t last long.
Just a week later, her mom showed up unexpectedly for a visit and discovered a stash of junk food at her place—spicy strips, potato chips, snail noodles, and others.
The more items she found, the more gloomy “Officer Liu’s” face became, and “Suspect Su’s” head drooped lower and lower.
Eventually, as the evidence piled up, Su Yan decided to come clean and hope for a lighter punishment. She bravely opened the fridge, revealing her guilty pleasures: cake and ice cream.
Liu Xiang almost fainted from anger. “Do you know that you are pregnant?”
Su Yan defended herself. “I haven’t eaten it since I knew I was pregnant. So I take it out, smell it, and put it back!”
Liu Xiang: “Why do you smell it? It’s because you want to eat it!”
Su Yan: “…”
Despite her pleading appearance, her mother confiscated all her snacks and drinks. Before leaving, Liu Xiang warned her fiercely. “If I catch you eating junk food again, you’ll be in trouble!”
Under her mother’s order, the only thing Su Yan could do was obey her.
Su Yan missed her snacks, but luckily, her husband was with her.
It was the 12th week of pregnancy, and the soon-to-be parents went to the hospital for a check-up.
Everything was okay, and as soon as she walked out of the doctor’s office, Su Yan held Bai Xingfan’s arm affectionately and called out tenderly, “Husband~”
Bai Xingfan knew his wife very well, so he suppressed his smile and asked, “What’s wrong?”
“I suddenly remembered that I bought a McDonald’s voucher online a long time ago. If we don’t use it, it will expire. Let’s use it now, right? Otherwise, it will be such a waste,” she said, wanting to say what she had wanted to say for a long time.
Bai Xingfan knew that she was greedy.
Although it was not good to eat such food during pregnancy, it was okay to eat it once in a while, so he agreed to her request. “Okay, but there’s one condition.”
Su Yan didn’t expect him to agree so directly, and she was very surprised. “You say!” As long as she could eat McDonald’s, she would agree to anything!
Bai Xingfan: “No cold drinks, and no ice cream.”
Su Yan looked at him eagerly and said, “I won’t eat it, but can you eat one? Let me lick it.”
‘How much do you want to eat?’ Bai Xingfan couldn’t help laughing while hearing his wife’s words. “Okay.”
Su Yan was so excited that it seemed like the New Year was coming.
But it was indeed the New Year.
A month later, the Lunar New Year arrived.
*****
Su Yan followed Bai Xingfan back to the Bai family on New Year’s Eve.
They had been married for two years, and they had spent last year’s Spring Festival in Linchuan Ancient Town, so this was the first time she had followed him back to the Bai family to celebrate the New Year after they got married.
At first, she was still a little uncomfortable and worried. ‘What if there were many relatives coming to the house during the New Year and there were many rules? What if I accidentally made a fool of myself?’
But it turned out that she was overthinking.
Except for the family members, there was only one more person. She was a teenage girl. The girl’s name was Nan Yun, who was currently in high school. She was the daughter of Bai Xingfan’s aunt, who was living with her father in Xifu and would come to Dongfu for a short stay during the winter and summer vacations.
Mr. and Mrs. Bai may have placed their longing for their daughter on their granddaughter, so they loved Nan Yun.
Su Yan felt a little more affection for Nan Yun after learning about her mother from Bai Xingfan. Plus, Nan Yun was really a sweet girl.
After the New Year’s Eve dinner, the whole family gathered in the living room to chat, catch up, and enjoy the Spring Festival Gala.
Nan Yun sat next to Su Yan. “Can I touch your belly?” she asked with a mix of excitement and shyness.
Su Yan grinned and nodded. “Of course.” She was over four months along, and her baby bump was noticeable.
Nan Yun gently placed her hand on Su Yan’s slightly rounded belly. Even with a thin sweater in between, she could sense the miracle of life beneath her palm.
“My brother says she’s going to be a beautiful girl,” Nan Yun said, beaming.
Su Yan couldn’t help but chuckle. “Your brother really wants a daughter.”
“I really want a little niece! I can’t wait to dress her up like a doll, style her hair, and change her outfits every single day,” the teenager exclaimed with a bright smile on her face.
Su Yan suddenly recalled her dream, placed her hands on her belly and muttered, “I really hope it’s a beautiful little girl.”
Su Yan felt sleepy before ten o’clock due to her pregnancy; she said goodbye to others and headed upstairs.
Just as she finished washing up and stepped out of the bathroom, the bedroom door swung open, and Bai Xingfan walked in.
Su Yan was taken aback and asked, “What are you doing here?”
Bai Xingfan replied, “I came to sleep, of course.”
Su Yan quickly responded, “But… you should hang out with your parents and grandparents.”
Bai Xingfan countered, “Xinglan is there.”
Su Yan was about to argue more, but Bai Xingfan added, “He’s with Grandpa and Grandma for the New Year. Let me tell you a bedtime story.”
Su Yan chuckled. “What?”
Seeing he was not joking, she climbed onto the bed and leaned back against the pillow.
Bai Xingfan sat next to Su Yan and spoke to her belly, “I’m your dad. Remember this: no falling in love too early, okay?”
His voice was soft but firm.
Su Yan sighed before muttering, “This is how it starts every day. Even if you don’t find it annoying, she might.”
Bai Xingfan replied, “We need to let her learn from earlier so she can remember.”
Su Yan just shook her head helplessly. ‘Oh man!’
****
Days passed quickly, and Su Yan’s belly grew bigger like a balloon.
Around the Dragon Boat Festival, her belly had grown as big as a small hill.
[Note:- The Dragon Boat Festival is a classic Chinese celebration that takes place on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese calendar, usually falling in late May or early June on the Gregorian calendar. This holiday is also linked to customs aimed at driving away evil spirits and preventing illness.]
The film “The Nightingale” premiered during the Dragon Boat Festival, so Su Yan and Bai Xingfan decided to hit the cinema for a date. After the movie, Bai Xingfan drove Su Yan to his in-laws’ place for dinner. As the sky darkened, the neon lights along the road flickered to life, and a steady stream of cars filled the streets.
While waiting at a red light, Bai Xingfan suddenly quoted a line from the film. “80% of men with tie clips are refined gentlemen, and the other 20% are just refined scum.”
Su Yan was taken aback: “…”
How could she have forgotten that line? She was the one who had written it in the movie script.
Seeing his wife was speechless, Bai Xingfan glanced at her and teased. “Are you talking about me, Mrs. Bai?”
Feeling a bit embarrassed, Su Yan looked down, but when she noticed her belly, her embarrassment turned into indignation. “You got me pregnant, so aren’t you the scum?” she shot back,
This time, Bai Xingfan was speechless.
Su Yan huffed.“Humph!”
Bai Xingfan chuckled, realising he couldn’t win this argument. “I can never outsmart you.”
With a proud smile, Su Yan asked, “Are you convinced or not?”
Bai Xingfan grinned and replied, “I accept.”
Before they knew it, August had arrived. The baby was due just three days after Chinese Valentine’s Day, so that day marked their last Valentine’s celebration together before they became parents. So Bai Xingfan had promised Su Yan a trip to KFC.
[Note: The event, which celebrates romantic love, is frequently referred to as the traditional Chinese version of Valentine’s Day. Chinese mythology serves as the inspiration for the celebration, which honours the love story of Zhinü and Niulang, the weaving maiden and the cowherd, respectively. According to the Chinese lunisolar calendar, the festival falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunisolar month, from mid-July to mid-August.]
Su Yan had been craving fried chicken for almost two months, so she was super excited. Before Bai Xingfan even started the car, she was already waiting at the door with her umbrella in hand.
As they drove to KFC, she was glued to her phone, adding all sorts of food to her cart. By the time they arrived, she had already placed her order.
However, it was Chinese Valentine’s Day, and KFC was packed with no seats available. But Su Yan was determined to satisfy her craving, so she found a stool in a corner and sat down. Bai Xingfan stood in front of her, holding the tray.
With her growing belly, she had to sit with her legs apart. Feeling a bit lazy, she held her hamburger in her left hand while resting her right hand on her thigh.
People passing by shot sympathetic looks at Bai Xingfan, the “human dining table”. But he didn’t mind at all. “Take your time,” he reminded her from time to time with a slight smile on his face.
Su Yan was generous. She fed him a bite here and there. After polishing off the last spicy chicken wing, she wiped her hands, but as she stood up, her little one kicked unexpectedly.
With a sigh, she looked down and muttered, “I brought you here to eat, not to kick!”
Bai Xingfan chuckled hearing his wife’s words. “Maybe she enjoyed the meal too.”
Su Yan teased. “You little greedy cat. You’ve been kicking all day!”
As they left KFC hand in hand, Bai Xingfan asked, “So, where to next?”
Before she could think, she suddenly felt a warm rush between her legs. She froze up instantly.
Bai Xingfan noticed something was off. “What’s going on?”
Su Yan felt like crying but had no tears. “My water broke, but I just had a cup of hot milk. Is your daughter about to be born with milk?”
Bai Xingfan: “…”
