Yan Yan - Chapter 74

Chapter 74 – Extra 8
Su Yan and Bai Xingfan never planned to have a second child. They were completely smitten with their daughter, Qiqi, and wanted to shower her with all their love, ensuring she wouldn’t feel neglected or left out. They envisioned her as their only child.
But life had a funny way of throwing surprises at you. When Qiqi was just two years and three months old, Su Yan found out she was unexpectedly pregnant.
The news hit her like a ton of bricks. She had never imagined she would be expecting again. It was actually the chubby aunt who nudged her to take a pregnancy test.
They were having lunch at that time. Looking at Master Bai who was eating with relish, Su Yan smiled and said with emotion, “How come this girl has such a good appetite? She is not picky about food. When I was a child, I never ate fatty meat. I would vomit after eating it. I only started eating it after entering college.” She sighed again, “I don’t know what happened recently. I started vomiting again.”
After a moment of thought, the cubby aunt asked, “Could you be pregnant again?”
Su Yan was taken aback, instinctively saying, “No…” But before she could finish, a memory struck her.
Last Christmas, they had dropped Qiqi off at her grandparents’ place and then went out to enjoy a carefree day together. The amusement park was so magical and thrilling that Su Yan almost forgot she was a mom.
After enjoying a day out, they decided to check into a hotel instead of going home.
‘It was that night, and we didn’t use any protection! Who would’ve guessed that this one moment of carelessness led to creating a life?
Staring at the red line on the pregnancy test, Su Yan was at a loss for how to react.
An unexpected baby.
Later that night, they were playing with Qiqi like they usually did.
Tonight, Qiqi wanted to play hide-and-seek. She found her own hiding spot while her dad searched for her, and her mom acted as the referee.
Dad shut his eyes and counted to ten while Qiqi scurried off to hide.
Once Bai Xingfan finished counting, he called out, “Are you hiding?”
Bai Qiqi shouted back, “Hiding!”
Her voice gave away her location, making it pretty obvious where she was.
Bai Xingfan couldn’t help but chuckle, and when he turned around to see her, he nearly burst out laughing.
Bai Qiqi, in her pink pyjamas and barefoot, was sprawled on the sofa with her little butt in the air and her head buried under a cushion. She was so sure she had blended in with the sofa that her dad would never find her.
Su Yan sat on the carpet beside her, covering her mouth tightly to prevent herself from laughing out loud.
When playing hide-and-seek with kids, it was less about actually finding them and more about putting on a good show. So Bai Xingfan had to pretend he didn’t see Master Bai and started his slow search in the living room. “Where’s Qiqi? Why can’t Dad find you?”
Bai Qiqi was having a blast, convinced she was hidden perfectly, even stifling her giggles.
Bai Xingfan kept up the act. From his experience, he knew he had to circle the first floor, then head back to the living room, deciding whether to look for Master Bai based on the vibe—he couldn’t always find her, but he couldn’t ignore her either. It was all about striking to keep Master Bai entertained.
Just as Bai Xingfan wrapped up his “search” in the living room and was about to head to the dining room, Su Yan trailed behind him.
“I need to tell you something,” Su Yan said.
With just the two of them in the dining room, Bai Xingfan asked, “What’s up?”
Su Yan replied, “I’m pregnant.”
Bai Xingfan was taken aback.
Su Yan continued, “It should be around Christmas.”
Bai Xingfan put two and two together, and asked with a doubt, “Do you want to keep it?”
Su Yan was honest. “I’m not sure.” She sighed before saying, “It’s a little life, and I can’t bring myself to destroy it… But I worry about Qiqi feeling neglected. If we have another child, we might unintentionally neglect Qiqi.”
Bai Xingfan understood where Su Yan was coming from but had his own thoughts. “Let’s ask Qiqi what she thinks.”
Su Yan: “Hmm?”
“Qiqi is part of the family too. She has every right to share her thoughts on whether she wants a brother or sister,” he said seriously.
Su Yan pondered this and realized that even though Master Bai was just two and a half years old, she was still considered family.
After chatting for a bit, the couple headed to the living room together.
Master Bai was still lying on the sofa, pretending to be invisible. But since her parents hadn’t checked on her in a while, she felt a bit anxious and called out, “Dad, did you find me?”
Bai Xingfan chuckled and lifted his daughter off the sofa. “Found you!”
Master Bai gasped. “Oh!”
Bai Xingfan settled on the sofa with his daughter on his lap and gently asked, “Qiqi, we have a question for you.”
Bai Qiqi looked up at him, curious. “What is it?”
Su Yan, sitting beside her husband, turned to their daughter and asked, “Do you want a little brother or sister?”
Bai Qiqi thought hard for a moment before nodding. “Yes! But I only want a little brother, not a sister,” she said with a serious baby voice.
Su Yan was taken aback, and asked, “Why’s that?”
Bai Qiqi replied, “Because after I have a little brother, I can bully him like you and Dad bully my uncles.”
Bai Xingfan was torn between laughter and exasperation. “That’s not bullying, that’s called discipline. They need it because they don’t know better.”
Su Yan chimed in, “Exactly, we discipline your uncles because they’re naughty.”
Bai Qiqi added, “Then I want to discipline my brother too! I want him to help me finish my food, just like Sister Yueyue does with her brother.”
Yueyue was Bai Qiqi’s friend from her early childhood education class.
“Sweetie, there’s nothing you can’t finish.” As she said this, she playfully poked her daughter’s tummy.
The little one might be small, but she was sharp and could express herself well. Master Bai immediately pouted and looked up at her dad. “I have more food than I can finish. I am a girl. How can I eat so much?”
Su Yan just sighed. ‘Some things never change, even from a young age.’
Bai Xingfan tried to hold back his laughter and chimed in, “Exactly, our Qiqi is a girl, and she’s very dainty when it comes to eating.”
Bai Qiqi nodded in agreement. “Yep, I’m very dainty.”
Su Yan sighed again. She then asked, “Besides wanting your brother to help you finish your food, what else do you need him for?”
Bai Qiqi thought for a moment and replied, “I want new crayons, but you won’t buy me any. I can give him my old ones and ask you to get me new ones. He’ll be super happy, and I’ll be happy too. Everyone will be happy!”
Su Yan: “…”
Bai Xingfan chuckled. “Pretty clever.”
Su Yan replied honestly, “Yeah, she’s really smart, but it’s tough on my son…”
With Bai Qiqi’s strict rules of “give him more than he can handle” and “hand him the old crayons,” Su Yan and Bai Xingfan decided to keep the kid for now.
By September, Su Yan’s belly was as round as a hot air balloon.
September 1st marked Bai Huaijin’s first day of kindergarten.
[Note: Just a reminder – Bai Huaijin is Bai Qiqi’s official name.]
With Su Yan’s due date just a month away, Bai Xingfan was hesitant about taking Su Yan to kindergarten. He was worried Su Yan would have an accident in the crowded place.
But it was their daughter’s one of the most important days in her life, so how could Su Yan miss that?
She knew that if she didn’t go to soothe both Bai Xingfan and Bai Qiqi, the daughter-slave father would probably bring their daughter home the moment she started to cry.
And sure enough, her instincts were correct.
Just as the kindergarten teacher was about to lead Bai Qiqi into the classroom, the little girl sensed something was off. Even though her parents assured her they’d be back in the afternoon, she felt overwhelmed, and scared, and started to wail. “Mom and Dad, don’t leave me!”
Su Yan felt a mix of wanting to laugh and cry, but Bai Xingfan was far from amused.
His eyes teared up as he looked at Su Yan, saying, “Why not just wait until next year? She’s only three.”
Su Yan: ‘… I knew it!’
She couldn’t pick up her daughter because of her big belly, but Bai Xingfan stepped in and lifted her up. Bai Qiqi clung to her dad’s neck. Her little body rested on his shoulder as she cried.
Her tears tugged at her father’s heartstrings.
Su Yan gently patted her daughter’s head, soothing her for a while until the little girl finally agreed to go with the teacher into the classroom. Just before stepping inside, she turned back to her parents, waving and sobbing, “Goodbye, Mom and Dad. Don’t forget to pick me up. I’ll miss you!”
Su Yan quickly reassured the little girl. “Don’t worry, we’ll be the first one there to pick you up.”
With that, Master Bai felt a bit better and headed into the classroom.
Instead of leaving, Su Yan and Bai Xingfan lingered by the back door, peeking through the glass to watch their daughter.
The little girl, dressed in a white dress, sat quietly on a blue chair, with her head down as she wiped away her tears. She looked so heart-wrenching.
Su Yan sighed, feeling a wave of sadness wash over her. She glanced at her husband, who was equally at a loss for words—one child crying inside, the other outside, it felt like a scene from a movie.
On the drive home, Bai Xingfan was quiet, his eyes red the entire time. If others see him, they would think he was heartbroken not because he sent his daughter to kindergarten; but because of a problem at home.
Su Yan felt a mix of helplessness and amusement. She never imagined a guy could get so emotional after having a daughter.
“She’s just gone to kindergarten, not getting married, and she’ll be back home tonight,” Su Yan said with a smile.
Bai Xingfan took a deep breath and replied, “It’s too soon to mention the marriage, so let’s not even go there.”
Su Yan: “…”
Bai Xingfan dropped Su Yan off at the early childhood centre to join a prenatal class.
Class wrapped up at 10:30 a.m., and Su Yan thought they’d head straight home. But Bai Xingfan drove in the opposite direction, leaving her puzzled. “Where are we going? Aren’t you supposed to be at the office this afternoon?”
Bai Xingfan replied, “I’m picking up Qiqi.”
Su Yan: “???”
Bai Xingfan: “She’s been at kindergarten for nearly three hours.”
Su Yan: “That’s just three hours; they’re supposed to stay all day.”
Bai Xingfan insisted, “She’s never been away for that long.”
Su Yan: “…”
Su Yan: “If you’re this worried about her at this time, what will you do when she gets married? You might not see her for weeks!”
Bai Xingfan: “That’s why I can’t let her marry far away.”
Su Yan: “I didn’t marry far away, but I’m not going home often.”
Bai Xingfan: “In the Bai family, if a daughter marries someone from outside her community, it’s considered marrying far away.”
Su Yan: ‘As for me, not only is my marriage far away but there are a few neighbourhoods between us, making it feel like I’m in a whole different world.’
