Chapter 15.2
“You are quite jealous.”
Lu Yuling’s playful voice lingered in her mind all the time. And when she opened the door, her heart was still beating at a fast rate. But she didn’t want to admit it because she didn’t know how to deal with the fact after admitting it.
‘I’m not jealous”—on the way home, Li Xining kept hypnotising herself, but it seemed to have little effect. Her cheeks were flushed all the time, and it didn’t get better after she got home.
Her mother and grandparents were still awake, and seeing her granddaughter’s flushed expression, the old couple thought she was sick, and they couldn’t be more worried.
“Xiao Yao’s face is so red; do you have a fever?” Mrs. Li looked at her granddaughter worriedly.
Li Xining quickly shook her head. “No, grandma, I don’t have a fever; it’s just hot.”
Mrs. Li didn’t believe it. “It’s almost October; why are you so hot?”
Li Xining faltered and couldn’t speak.
Yu Wenyin studied her daughter for a while before asking, “Who brought you back?”
Li Xining was so nervous that she couldn’t breathe, and she couldn’t control her tongue. “I, myself, myself.”
Yu Wenyin glared at her. “Is it because you came alone so that you are hot when you come back?”
Unable to answer the question, Li Xining simply stopped answering, buried her head in her body, and walked towards her bedroom. “I’m going to wash my face and go to sleep.”
“Wait first.” This time it was Mr. Li who said, “Did that kid named Lu send you back?”
Li Xining was ashamed and anxious; her face turned even redder. “Grandpa!”
Mr. Li really didn’t mean anything else; he just asked and didn’t understand why his granddaughter became anxious. Look at you, why are you blushing?”
Yu Wenyin stared at her daughter and said angrily, “Who else can there be besides him?”
Li Xining: “…” ‘Since you all know this well, why do you have to ask the bottom line? Do I want to lose face?
At this time, Mr. Li asked again. “Where does the kid live? Why does he come to pick you up and drop you off every day? By the way, do you know what the kid does at home? What are the parents’ names?”
Li Xining was even more embarrassed and said embarrassingly, “…Grandpa, how do I know this?”
Mr. Li was still a little anxious. “Why don’t you ask?”
When Mrs. Li heard what his husband said, she glared at him angrily. “Look at you, old man; the older you get, the more confused you become. This is a private matter for that family. Can you ask casually? She is a big girl, asking a young man about this matter. How unruly.”
The old lady used to be a young lady from a rich family, and she was quite conservative in her thinking. She was always afraid that her granddaughter’s reputation would be ruined, so she became more and more angry when she spoke, and she even scolded her daughter-in-law: “Don’t talk about that kid named Lu in the future. Our youngest is a girl, and she will marry in the future, so it’s not good to spread the word.”
Mr. Li retorted. “You are all dross thinking; what’s wrong with the two classmates getting along normally?” However, the old man did not continue to inquire about Lu Yuling but asked, “Xiaoyao, I heard your mother say that tomorrow is going to be a parent meeting.”
Finally, he stopped talking about Lu Yuling, and Li Xining felt relieved. “Tomorrow, it will be 4:30 p.m.”
Although there was only a three-day holiday, before the National Day vacation, the school would have a meeting for the parents and teachers of the third grade students.
Mr. Li said, “Allow your grandma and me to come along. Your mom can take care of the parent-teacher meeting for you. You can guide the two of us around the school to show us what it looks like now.”
Li Xining didn’t think too deeply about it, but she thought her grandpa was amusing and liked to have fun like a child. So she responded with a smile. “Sure, when the time comes, I will buy you two really tasty fried chicken cutlets from our school.”
Mr. Li was really happy, nodded, and said, “Sure.” Then he stopped talking and walked towards his room with his hands behind his back, wobbling and feeling weighed down.
When Li Xining’s father passed away, Mr.Li sorted out his son’s personal belongings. When Li Xining’s father was studying abroad, communication technology was not very advanced, so people still had to use letters to talk to others in their own country or in other countries. While organising the old items, Mr.Li happened to come across the letters exchanged between his son, Li Zhang, and Zhao Hailan.
[T/L: “Zhao Hailan” was mentioned in chapter 6. He was Li Zhang’s (Li Xining’s father’s) friend.]
One year after Li Zhang went to study in the United States, Zhao Hailan sent him a letter. In the letter, Zhao Hailan told Li Zhang that he had found a girlfriend and promised that he wanted to marry her. In the letter, there was a picture of the girl.
When Mr. Li saw the photo, he immediately recognised that the girl in the photo was Lu Rongyue.
The girl was from the Lu family.
Lu Rongyue was both pretty and intelligent, and she was very talented, especially in playing the piano. When she sat in front of the piano, no matter what, she always appeared like a royal princess.
The Lu family and the Zhao family had little friendship, but Mr. Li and Mr. Lu had a good relationship. The two old people had known each other since they were young.
Mr. Li really liked the girl from the Lu family. He even wanted to marry her to his son, but the Lu family didn’t want it to happen. But Mr. Li didn’t intend to give up. Therefore, Mr. Li frequently asked Lu Rongyue to come to his house, wanting her to get to know Li Zhang better.
But you can’t force your relationship. Rongyue and Li Zhang just didn’t like each other. And whenever Rongyue came, Li Zhang would drag Zhao Hailan to his house.
Mr. Li’s intention didn’t succeed because Li Zhang said that he didn’t want to marry Lu Rongyue.
After finishing college, Li Zhang travelled to a different country, where he met Yu Wenyin, and the two of them fell in love. Rongyue started attending college, while Zhao Hailan began working with his father in their business. Everything was going well.
A few years later, the Zhao family suddenly told the Li family that Zhao Hailan was marrying a girl named Lin.
Shortly after, Mr. Li was told the news by the Lu family. Lu Rongyue had done something that made her family feel embarrassed, and as a result, she was forced to leave her home. She had a baby, but she didn’t say who the baby’s father was.
Mr. Li didn’t have any knowledge of the history between Lu Rongyue and Zhao Hailan, so he didn’t pay much attention to it. He believed that one family was happy and the other was sad. Also, as time passed, the relationship between the Li and Lu families became more and more distant. He never heard anything about Lu Rongyue anymore.
He didn’t fully understand everything until his fourth son, Li Zhang, died. He found some photos among his son’s things, which made him think that the child in the photos might be Zhao Hailan’s. However, this was only a guess. He couldn’t be sure about it, so he didn’t tell anyone, including his family.
He had forgotten that for some time until he met Lu Yuling.
This kid called Lu Yuling looked a lot like Zhao Hailan when he was young, but his eyes are exactly like Rongyue’s.
‘But how is it possible for such a strange thing to happen in the world? He looks just like Zhao Hailan, and his last name is Lu. Is he the child of Lu Rongyue?’ The old man thought his idea was silly, but he still wanted to know the truth. ‘What if it were true and that this child was Rongyue’s?’
The old man felt bad. He always believed that he was the one responsible for all these errors. If he hadn’t brought Rongyue to his house, she would not have met Zhao Hailan.
If this child belonged to Zhao Hailan, then he felt bad for Rongyue and the Lu family.
He wanted to make sure the mother and son were treated fairly.
‘Rongyue is a bit younger than Zhang’er, and she is now over forty years old. If there is a parent-teacher meeting at the school, she will surely come. If this child’s mother is indeed her, I can definitely tell.’ Mr.Li thought deeply while gazing at a corner of the room.
Have a nice day!
