Chapter 16.2
The city was covered with layers of snow. The mother and the son stood by the bus stop and waited for nearly half an hour before the bus bound for Grandma and Grandpa’s house came. When they got on the bus, Lu Yuling’s little feet were frozen.
The snowy weather caused the usual drive time of one hour to double to two hours. The bus system in Xifu was not very old; it was developed less than ten years ago, and the buses they use are also very old. Because of the cold weather, they were unsteady when running.
Lu Yuling quickly fell asleep in his mother’s embrace shortly after getting on the bus. When his mom woke him up, his face was already red because he had just woken up from sleep.
His mother took him out of the bus while he was still sleepy, and when the cold wind blew, he instantly woke up because of the cold and started trembling. At that time, he really did not want to see his grandma and grandpa. Sleeping at home felt great, so why did he have to be there? ‘Why bother going to meet someone who doesn’t like you, especially on such a cold day?’
The seven-year-old didn’t understand.
After they walked on the snow for ten more minutes, they finally got to Grandma and Grandpa’s house.
Back then, grandma and grandpa didn’t live with their uncle and aunt. They lived by themselves in a house with a yard. The house was on a long street.
The entrance of the house had a fancy metal fence. Lu Yuling’s grandpa planted many different flowers and plants in the yard. They grew and became colourful in the summer. But right now, it was the end of winter, and there was a lot of thick snow on the ground. The area was covered, but only two sidewalks and a driveway were cleared.
His mom held him with one hand and carried the New Year’s gift for his grandparents with the other. When she went to the villa’s door, she released his hand and then pressed the doorbell by the fancy door.
No one came out to open the door for a long time.
Mom pressed it again. After waiting for a long time, there was still no movement.
Lu Yuling became a little impatient and reached out to grab the corner of her mother’s clothes. “Mom, there is no one at grandma and grandpa’s house. Let’s go. Let’s go.”
Mom still didn’t give up and rang the doorbell again.
Maybe the people in the house were bothered by the constant bother, so they decided to open the villa’s door. Right after that, a woman around middle age wearing a red vest emerged from the house. After noticing the person, she took a deep breath and walked rapidly towards the fancy gate.
Lu Yuling knew her. She was Aunt Wang, the nanny at her grandparents’ house.
In his impression, Aunt Wang was a good person—very gentle, not as fierce as his grandma and grandpa—so when he saw Aunt Wang, he happily and politely shouted to her. “Happy New Year, Aunt Wang!”
“Hey, eh! Happy New Year!”
He was so young that he didn’t notice Aunt Wang’s forced smile on her face, as if she were troubled by something.
When she walked to the wrought iron gate, she did not open the door for them. Instead, she sighed again and looked at the mother with her child outside the door in embarrassment and helplessness through the iron railing. “Miss, the master, and his wife are still the same, or…” She searched for a long time and finally found less hurtful words. “It’s still the same; people are old and have a stubborn temper.”
Lu Yuling’s mother already knew this would happen. She let out a deep breath and pushed the items she had brought through the small openings in the railing. She said, “This is a protective pad for my dad’s knee. It’s so cold today, so he will surely become ill today if he doesn’t take care of himself. There are sweaters and scarves for my mother. I made all of them using knitting. Please help me deliver these items to them.”
Aunt Wang stopped for a moment, as if she had known what was going to happen soon, but she still accepted it and spoke kindly. She said, “Ok, Miss, now you go. The child’s face is red because it’s cold outside.”
The mom smiled and said, “Thank you, Sister Wang.”
Aunt Wang said she didn’t need to thank her. She told them to hurry back to the house because it’s very cold outside.
The mom agreed by nodding her head, but she didn’t physically move her body. She was excited and anticipating something.
Sister Wang sighed and looked sad and unsure. She held the things and went in.
Have a nice day!
