You hidden in my heart - Chapter 17.1

Chapter 17.1
The little boy sat obediently in the corner of the stage while his mother played the piano. After an unknown amount of time, the mother finally finished playing the piano, stood up, bent down, thanked the audience, then walked off the stage and walked towards the little boy in the corner.
When the mother held her son’s little hand, a man’s anxious voice came from behind them: “Yes, it’s Yueer? Are you Yu’er?”
The man’s voice was inexplicably trembling.
Little Lu Yuling and his mother turned around at the same time and saw a man wearing a grey suit and gold-rimmed glasses. The man was handsome and gentle at first glance.
Who would have imagined, though, that the mother would have acted like a thief, seeing the police when she saw this man? She grabbed her son from the ground right away and fled. She even neglected to ask for her salary for today at the foreman’s office.
The man chased them and yelled, “Basket is still searching for you! For six years, Basket has been searching for you.”
The five-year-old boy didn’t know who the basket was in that uncle’s mouth. He didn’t even know who the basket was. He thought the basket could be a person, but the image that came to his mind was just an ordinary vegetable basket, and he was quite curious as to why a vegetable basket wanted to find his mother.
However, the moment his mother heard what that man said, she suddenly stopped, and then her eyes turned red.
After inhaling deeply, Lu Rongyue turned to face the man who was pursuing them. “Do not let him know that you have seen me,” she pleaded in a tone that was somewhat hoarse. “I never, ever want to see him again in my life.”
The man said nothing. It took some time for him to eventually catch sight of the young boy in Lu Rongyue’s arms, and he was clearly taken aback, saying, “This child, yes, is…”
Lu Rongyuer’s tone was firm and unquestionable. “No! ”
The man didn’t seem to believe what Lu Rongyue said. “It’s so similar. How could it not be?”
“If I say no, it’s not!” Lu Rongyue was angry. She hugged the child tightly in her arms, tears bursting into her eyes instantly. “Why do you keep asking? Am I shameless? Or do I have no heart?” she shouted while holding her cries.
The man stopped talking and was silent for a long time. He sighed and said to Lu Rongyue, “I’m sorry.”
Lu Rongyue ignored the man, turned around, and left.
But a week later, the man showed up at their home out of nowhere. “I brought your salary from your foreman,” the man grinned as soon as Lu Rongyue opened the door. “The forman said you resigned.” He then took an envelope from his pocket as he was speaking.
More than a decade ago, before electronic money was invented, cash was still the most popular medium of exchange.
With a sigh, Lu Rongyue unlocked the door and welcomed the man inside. They were residing in a Tongzi building at the time. The rental home had just one room and was not very large. The bathroom and kitchen were located in the hallway.
The little Lu Yuling was squatting on the ground, playing with cars. When the man entered the room, he kindly asked Lu Yuling what his name was. Asked him again how old he was. Then he took out a red box from the bag he was carrying, saying it was a gift for him—a remote control car.
The little boy was so happy when he saw the gift. At that time, remote control cars were high-end toys, but he did not dare accept the gift from this uncle and glanced at his mother for her approval.
However, his mother did not let him accept the gift but looked at the man helplessly. “You can take it home; he doesn’t want it. Just leave.”
The man replied with a smile. “But my daughter only likes to play with dolls.” As he said that, he put the car in front of the boy and said, “You don’t need to look at your mother’s opinion; this is your birthday gift from your uncle.”
The little boy was super surprised. “How did you know it was my birthday?”
The man says, “Because I can tell fortunes.”
When the little boy went to play with the car happily, Li Zhang asked Lu Rongyue, “Is it time for the child to go to school? Does he have a household registration?”
[TL: If you have forgotten who “Li Zhang” was, you can go back to chapter 15.2 to recall your memory.]
This sentence seemed to sting Lu Rongyue’s pain, and she frowned and said nothing.
Li Zhang replied, “I will solve it for you.” As if he was afraid of his mother’s rejection, he quickly added, “I won’t tell the basket.”
Lu Rongyue looked at Li Zhang in surprise and gratitude, wriggled her lips, and finally said, “Thank you.”
Li Zhang replied with a smile, “Thank you for what? Basket and I had agreed to marry our children before. Just treat it as a favour for my son-in-law and ask him to be nice to my daughter in the future.” He didn’t want the little boy’s mother to be embarrassed and didn’t want her to have any psychological burden, so he used this kind of joke to lighten the atmosphere.
Lu Rongyue eventually burst out laughing at this, then turned to face Li Zhang and said, “I remember you were very boring before, but now you are much more cheerful.”
Li Zhang smiled and answered, somewhat arrogantly, “My wife is excellent. Even after so many years of being together, we have always made improvements.”
And what could a person who was working in a shopping mall do without a sharp-tongued mouth?
Later, Li Zhang really helped the mother and son solve the household registration problem. He bought them a house with household registration next to a well-known elementary school in Xifu City.
Although house prices were not high back then, money was valuable in that era. After Lu Rongyue learned about this, she firmly refused to let Li Zhang do this because she didn’t know how to repay him.
Li Zhang insisted on this, and later he found a job for Lu Rongyue as a primary school music teacher. The salary was neither high nor low, but it was stable and leisurely, allowing her to take good care of the child.
A few days before her death, Lu Rongyue told her son all these things—except for the basket part—and she also told him that Uncle Li was a great, good man. The mother and son owed Uncle Li a lot of favours, and she would definitely pay them back in her life. Finally, she said, “If you meet Uncle Li’s daughter in the future, you should be nicer to her.”
“I have never met his daughter.” Lu Yuling really had never seen her when she was a child. His vow to marry Uncle Li’s daughter had long been forgotten by him; after all, childish talk had no scruples.
Mom smiled, and her haggard and sick face showed a rare hint of joy. “I said that if you are destined, you should be nicer to others. She is Uncle Li’s daughter.”
Lu Yuling felt a little embarrassed after hearing what his mother said: “That was all in my childhood.”
His mother stopped teasing him, sighed, held his hand, and said to him seriously, “If you really meet his daughter in the future, you must protect her well and protect her for Uncle Li.”
At that time, Lu Yuling could also have a premonition that his mother’s time was running out, so he held his mother’s hand and nodded his promise. “Well, don’t worry.”
Have a nice day!
