Chapter 5

Li Xining lost her father at the age of ten due to a car accident, making her whole life crumble. The sunshine in her life was gone, leaving only a mass of impenetrable darkness.

Fortunately, she still had her mother, who took her out of the darkness.

Her mom was an amazing woman.

Li Xining’s father, Li Zhang, was a very business-minded financial genius.

The Li family had been in business for generations, and they were regarded as a wealthy family in society. Li Zhang’s first venture capital came from his parents. In the late 1980s, he established the Haixing Real Estate Group. After nearly 20 years of development, it had gradually become a leader among domestic real estate groups. The founder, Li Zhang, was even known as a business wizard.

Unfortunately, such a talent, Li Zhang, died in a car accident at the age of forty-three, and all the glory came to an abrupt end with it.

On the day of the memorial service for Li Zhang, countless relatives and friends came to express their condolences. However, only Li Zhang’s parents, siblings,  Yu Wenyin and Li Xining, were truly heartbroken due to Li Zhang’s death.

The ugly faces were shown after the memorial service as the people in the company started conflicts.

Haixing was a big icing cake, and too many people wanted to eat it all to themselves.

Yu Wenyin had accompanied her husband all the way to start a business, not only as his wife but also as his confidant. Therefore, she didn’t want to see her husband’s painstaking creation eroded by others. But as the widow of Li Zhang, people in the company ignored her. She felt very helpless, as she didn’t hold a large number of shares.

Fortunately, Li Zhang’s parents took action for their daughter-in-law and transferred all the shares they held to Yu Wenyin, which made her the largest shareholder of Haixing.

Before they transferred their shares, the old couple requested that if Yu Wenyin wanted to marry again, she must transfer all the shares under her name to Li Xining. It wasn’t that the old couple didn’t trust their daughter-in-law; they just wanted to leave a guarantee for their granddaughter.

Yu Wenyin understood the old couple and agreed with them.

Later, Yu Wenyin became the chairman of the Haixing Group with the support of the old couple.

As a woman, she had to face a lot of troubles when she first took the position of chairman. Too many people in the company had raised their voices against her. In the first two years, Yu Wenyin struggled as many people waited to see her jokes. But what those people finally got was not a joke but a growing starfish.

Yu Wenyin proved herself with actions and secured the position of chairman with a long-term vision.

When Li Xining was thirteen years old, Yu Wenyin thought of expanding the business. The Haixing Group, a real estate company, started to spread its wings into the tourism and hotel industries.

Dongfu was a more popular tourist destination than Xifu, so Yu Wenyin arranged things in Dongfu to start the first hotel under the Haixing Group. Because of that, Li Xining went to Dongfu with her mother and returned to Xifu after two and a half years.

While her daughter was in high school, Yu Wenyin was still very busy and often away from home for two or three months.

In order to make it easier for her daughter to go to school, she bought a house near No. 1 Middle School and hired an aunt to take care of her daily life.

But Li Xining’s grandparents were worried about letting their granddaughter stay at home alone for a long time. Normally, the pressure of studying in high school was so intense. So the old couple was scared about Li Xining living at home without the company of family members.

The old couple had five children and eight grandchildren, but the two of them loved Li Xining the most because her father left early.

In order to accompany their granddaughter, the old couple moved from the big villa in the southern suburbs villa area to the second-hand three-bedroom apartment without an elevator.

It’s not that Yu Wenyin didn’t buy a new house with an elevator, but that the housing supply near the school was so tight that she couldn’t even buy a house if she worked in real estate.

The No. 1 Middle School, a high school with a junior high school, had been operating for far too long. There were no new homes nearby since a sizable number of parents of primary school pupils were still waiting to be assigned a neighbourhood to purchase a home. Purchasing a pre-owned home would be good. What sort of lift do you want? During the days when Yu Wenyin was not at home because of her business trips, Li Xining was at home with her grandparents. Every time her mother came back from a business trip, she would go to sleep with her mother with a pillow in her arms on the first night. It was the same today.

After Yu Wenyin finished washing, she was sitting in front of the dressing table applying skin care products, when the bedroom door was knocked suddenly, and then a crack opened.

Li Xining was wearing a set of pink pajamas, standing at the door with her pillow in her arms. Her freshly washed cheeks were white and tender, like a delicate porcelain doll.

After the door opened, she poked her head in and asked, “Mother, have you gone to bed?”

On the dressing table in front of the mirror was a whole set of Ocean Mystery skin care products. Yu Wenyin gracefully dabbed her cheeks with her slender fingers, massaging lightly. “It’s time to go to bed; get out,” she said indifferently.

Li Xining pretended not to hear and walked into the bedroom with her little pillow in her arms, gently closed the door, and looked at her mother. “Mom, I miss you, I want to talk with you,” she said, pouting her mouth.

Yu Wenyin clapped her hands together and squinted at Li Xining. “What’s that kid’s name?”

Li Xining: “…” ‘Is it obvious?’

Yu Wenyin: “I thought you only knew how to study, and you’re going to be out of the world soon, and I’m going to take you to see a psychiatrist after the college entrance examination.”

Li Xining: “…”

“You really like that kid?” Yu Wenyin didn’t support her daughter’s puppy love but understood the hearts of adolescent boys and girls. After all, she also came from this age, and she understood how easy it was for the opposite sexes to attract each other during the hormonal outbreak period. So she knows that it was normal for her daughter to like the opposite sex at this age, and it was abnormal not to like it.

Since it’s a normal thing, she didn’t hide it. This would only be counterproductive. The best way was to communicate with her and guide her correctly.

Her educational philosophy had always been quite inclusive, therefore, she did not see her daughter’s relationship with a guy as particularly rebellious. Instead, she perceived it as a positive, demonstrating her continued normalcy and the fact that it was preferable to studying every day to become stupid.

After hearing her mother’s words, Li Xining sighed softly, then lay on the bed with the pillow in her arms, and looked at her mother with her cheeks dragging. “Actually, I don’t know if I like it.”

After hearing this, Yu Wenyin replied, “How can you not know whether you like him or not?”

“I don’t know whether I like him or appreciate him now.” Li Xining trusts her mother very much and also accepts her mother’s way of education, so she and her mother talk about almost everything, they are mother and daughter but also friends. “Oh, it’s a long story, I guess it started when I was in junior high school.”

“You two have known each other since you were in junior high school?”

“I was in the same class in the first year of junior high school, and then I transferred to another school.” Li Xining said, “It’s a very long story, do you want to hear it, Mother?”

Although it was a question, Li Xining’s eyes told another: ‘I’m going to start talking, you must listen!’

Li Xining knew that her mother was worried about her, so she hurriedly hugged her mother to comfort her. “Nothing happened to me. Mom, I will be very careful in the future, I swear!”

Yu Wenyin stared at Li Xining, sighed, and didn’t say anything, but she was very grateful to that brat named Lu Yuling; he saved her daughter’s life and her life as well.

Li Xining carefully looked at her mother’s face a few times, and after confirming that there was no anger, she continued. “I used to think that he was just a bum who didn’t seek to make progress and didn’t know what was good or bad, but now I find that he is quite a good person. Alright, there is nothing bad about it other than poor studies.”

‘Oh~not bad… How rebellious is that brat’s hairstyle?’ Yu Wenyin smiled and asked her daughter, “Do you think he is a simple and good boy even though he plays truant and rebellious?”

Li Xining felt that her mother had some negative opinions about Lu Yuling. “What exactly do you want to say?” she asked unhappily.

Yu Wenyin looked at Li Xining seriously. “I want to say that I am very grateful to him for saving you, but as a parent, I don’t like this kind of rebellious behaviour. I’m worried that he will bring you down.”

Li Xining was unconvinced. “Why are you so unconfident in me? Why is he bringing me down? Why can’t I bring him up?”

Yu Wenyin thought for a while and felt that her daughter’s words were not unreasonable. “Well, there is also this possibility, but the premise is that he is willing to listen to you and work hard for you, but this situation is too dreamy. What do you expect from him? The bigger the hope is, the bigger the disappointment may be in the end.”

If your grades become low because of that brat, I will lock you up until the college examination and ask a tutor to teach you at home.”
