Chapter 55.2

Li Xining switched off the bedside lamp, closed her eyes, and tried to drift off to sleep. Unable to sleep, she got up and went to the window to feel the night breeze.

After a moment, the sweat on her body started to evaporate, and she felt refreshed. But then she remembered that the bed sheets were still damp, so she decided to change them.

She switched on the desk lamp and went to the cabinet across the sofa. After opening the door, she spotted one of Lu Yuling’s T-shirts and slipped it on. It was baggy enough to work as comfy pyjamas.

Next, she started searching for the bed sheets but could not find them. So, she called out, “Lu Yuling!”

From the kitchen, he responded, “What’s up?”

“Where are the sheets?” she asked.

A moment later, Lu Yuling walked into the bedroom. He didn’t understand her question clearly, so he asked, “What do you need?”

“Where are the sheets? I need to change them,” Li Xining said, closing the cabinet door. “There aren’t any in here.”

“They’re in the cabinet in my mom’s room.” As he said this, Lu Yuling’s eyes drifted to the bed sheets, and he froze for a second.

Li Xining followed his gaze and noticed the grey-blue sheets had a few drops of red blood on them. Her face flushed with embarrassment, and she quickly dashed back to the bed, covering the stains with the quilt. “Don’t look at it!”

“Okay, come on. Let’s go grab the sheets,” Lu Yuling said with a calm expression. 

Li Xining shot him a look with a flushed face. “You’re such a troublemaker!” 

Lu Yuling smirked and replied, “Yep, I’m definitely a troublemaker.” Then, in a swift move, he pulled her towards him, lowered his head, and kissed her passionately.

After the kiss, he wrapped her in his arms and whispered in her ear like a promise, “I’ll treat you right. Only you, for this whole life.” 

Li Xining’s ears turned bright red, and she buried her face in his chest before saying, “If you ever treat me badly, I’ll let my brothers handle you.” She lifted her head with fierce eyes. “I’ve got five brothers.” 

Lu Yuling replied seriously, “Don’t worry. I won’t have any trouble with my brother.” 

Li Xining twisted his arm playfully, saying, “Who are you talking to? How embarrassing! They are my brothers, not yours!” 

Lu Yuling shot back confidently, “You’re my wife now, so they are my relatives.” 

Li Xining didn’t say anything right away. She stared at the young man and said firmly, “Lu Yuling, if I catch you with another woman, I’m done with you. Do you understand? I’ll never forgive you. No exceptions! Even if she tricked you with drinks or something!”

She had no clue about what really happened between Zhao Hailan and Lu Yuling’s mother. But she was sure that Zhao Hailan, the jerk, had cheated and betrayed the eldest lady, which left her heartbroken and made her leave with their child. 

After Li Xining finished college entrance exams, she had a conversation with her mother and learnt about the incident that happened to Zhao Hailan. Apparently, Zhao Cichu’s mom had gotten Zhao Hailan drunk, taken advantage of the situation to get pregnant, and then used the baby to force him into marriage. This whole mess drove a wedge between the eldest lady and Zhao Hailan.

Upon hearing that, Li Xining felt furious about Zhao Cichu’s mother. She thought that the woman was so manipulative and scheming. At the same time, she couldn’t help but think the eldest lady should have fought harder for her man. If she had been a bit tougher, Lu Yuling could have had a real family instead of living under someone else’s roof for years.

She shared these thoughts with her mom. “Why did the eldest lady leave? She had a child. If Zhao Hailan could marry someone he didn’t love for the kid’s sake, he wouldn’t just abandon the woman he loved and their child, right?” 

At first, her mom just said, “She was young when she got involved with Zhao Hailan.” 

Li Xining still couldn’t wrap her head around it. “After all those years together, how could she just walk away?”

“You’re still young. You won’t get it even if I explain,” Li Xining’s mother replied. 

Li Xining was confused. “How am I young? I’m almost nineteen!” 

Yu Wenyin paused, chose her words carefully, and said, “She followed Zhao Hailan as a teenager, giving him everything. She loved and trusted him completely, even risking her youth to build a life together. So when Zhao Hailan betrayed her, it crushed not just her love but her faith too.” 

Her mom explained clearly, but Li Xining just didn’t get it until now. She always thought the eldest lady’s choice was wrong. 

But today, when she committed to Lu Yuling, she finally grasped that feeling—wanting to be with him forever, to be his one and only, and not being able to handle any betrayal.

She finally understood Lu Yuling’s mom and felt a bit thankful too. If she hadn’t kept the baby, Lu Yuling wouldn’t even be here.

After hearing what Li Xining said, Lu Yuling was torn between laughing and crying. “Can you please stop watching so many dramatic TV shows and reading those novels?” 

Li Xining shot back, “I’m not joking! I’m serious!” 

“I’m serious too,” Lu Yuling said, trying not to laugh. “If you get drunk and drugged, you could turn that into a 40-episode series.”

Li Xining found him amusing at first, saying, “Gross!” But then her smile faded, and she got serious, adding, “But seriously, you can’t be doing this with other women.” 

Lu Yuling assured her. “Don’t worry, I promise I won’t be alone in a room with any other women from now on.” He raised his hand and promised, “I won’t go out drinking with other women either.” 

Li Xining was taken aback. His words hit her like an arrow.

‘Why did Zhao Hailan go to Zhao Cichu’s mom for drinks? And why was he alone with her? 

What a jerk! 

The ultimate jerk! 

No wonder the eldest lady couldn’t forgive you; it’s because you’re a total scumbag!’
