Chapter 55.3

“If you were tipsy and a woman suddenly jumped on you, do you think you’d acknowledge her?” Li Xining asked after pondering for a while. 

Lu Yuling replied honestly, “I have no idea. I’ve never been drunk, and I can’t get drunk by myself. It’s just not in my character.” 

‘Yes, it really is about character!’

She also realised that Princess Lu had a pretty impressive level of awareness! As long as his thoughts stayed clear and his actions were on point, Li Xining felt a wave of relief about Lu Yuling. Still, she wanted to clarify something. “How about this? One day when we’re home alone, I’ll get you drunk, and then we’ll see if you can still recognise me.” 

Lu Yuling paused for a moment and asked, “Li Xining, are you trying to mess with me?” 

Li Xining just stared at her, speechless.

Lu Yuling continued seriously, “But honestly, I’d advise not to do that. If I get drunk, I might forget everything, and you’ll have to take care of your own needs.” 

“So mean!” Then she asked with a flushed face, “If you black out, does that mean you can’t do anything at all?” 

Lu Yuling chuckled and said, “If I forget everything, what else is there to do?” 

Li Xining thought for a moment and then asked, “What if a married guy goes out drinking with a woman who has a crush on him, gets wasted, and then… well, a night goes by, and later she tells him she’s pregnant. Do you think that could happen?”

“Two scenarios,” Lu Yuling said thoughtfully. “First, the guy might not have been drunk at all and just played it to his advantage. Second, the kid might not even be his biological child.” 

Li Xining felt lost. Both options were hard for her to wrap her head around. 

‘If the first scenario is true, then Zhao Hailan is a total jerk; no question about it. But if the second one is true, that’s a harsh truth to face.”

Yet, when she thought it hard, she felt that the chance of the second scenario being true seemed slim.

‘Zhao Hailan is sharp; how could he not know if Zhao Cichu is his kid or not? Plus, kids in wealthy families go through all sorts of medical check-ups as they grow, so it’s not something you can easily hide. And honestly, Zhao Cichu and Zhao Hailan look so much alike that it’s obvious they’re related. 

So, it really only leaves one conclusion: Zhao Hailan is indeed a scumbag.’

Li Xining suddenly felt a wave of sympathy for Lu Yuling’s mom, who had been completely betrayed by someone she loved.

‘If she had been a bit more naive or less clever, maybe she wouldn’t have seen through Zhao Hailan’s true colours. But being smart, she couldn’t overlook the betrayal, leading her to end things without a second thought and cut him out of her life for good.

But now, Zhao Hailan seems to genuinely care for the eldest lady, so what was the point of his cheating in the first place?’

Li Xining was puzzled, so she reached out to the sharp-witted Princess Lu for some insight. “Lu Yuling, let me ask you again. A guy loves a girl deeply, and she loves him back, but he still cheats. What do you think is going on there?” 

Lu Yuling replied simply, “Because he’s cheap.” 

Li Xining paused for a moment and asked, “Can you explain that a bit more?” 

Lu Yuling frowned slightly and replied, “What’s there to explain more?” 

Li Xining, feeling frustrated, said, “I need you to break it down for me; I don’t get it!” 

Lu Yuling found her reaction amusing and continued, “Well, whether it’s a guy or a girl, there are usually two main reasons for cheating. First, they’ve fallen out of love; second, they’re chasing thrills. In your scenario, this guy has a girlfriend but still cheats, which suggests he’s after fun. Isn’t that cheap?” He concluded, “A guy like that deserves to be alone for life; otherwise, he’ll keep seeking just fun. If I were his wife, I’d definitely divorce him and cut all ties so he’d live with regret and pain every single day.” 

Li Xining was taken aback by the young man’s words. She looked at Lu Yuling with a mix of surprise and admiration. 

What surprised her was that his thoughts mirrored the choice his mother made years ago.

‘It seems he has clearly inherited his mother’s values and mindset. If he has taken after Zhao Hailan, he will be in trouble!’ 

Then, Li Xining turned to Lu Yuling and said earnestly, “How come I never noticed how adorable you are before?”

However, Lu Yuling was unhappy with his girlfriend’s words. “What do you mean, Li Xining?”

Li Xining remained calm and said, “I’m praising you.”

Lu Yuling looked at her for a moment and sighed before muttering, “You’re not as bossy as you were earlier.” 

Li Xining’s cheeks flushed again. She shot him a glare and snapped, “Why do you have to be so annoying?” Then she gave him a shove and said, “Go grab the sheets!” 

With a grin, Lu Yuling turned and headed toward his mother’s room, with Li Xining trailing right behind him. 

The bedroom was next to the kitchen, and the door was always shut tight. 

Lu Yuling reached the bedroom, opened the door, stepped inside, and flicked the switch on the wall. 

The ceiling light flickered on, casting a bright white glow. 

Although it was a small room, it looked cosy and neatly arranged. Most of the furniture and decor were popular styles from over a decade ago, which showed that after his mother passed, Lu Yuling hadn’t changed a thing, keeping it just as it was when she was alive.

It felt like she was still there. 

This made Li Xining feel like the room was somewhat mysterious and sacred, almost like a place where outsiders shouldn’t just walk in. So, she hesitated at the door and asked Lu Yuling, “Can I come in?” 

Lu Yuling was already in front of the cabinet, ready to open it. He turned to her and asked, “What’s stopping you from coming in?” 

Li Xining replied honestly, “Isn’t this your mom’s room?” 

Lu Yuling got what she meant and said, “From now on, you’re the lady of the house. You can go into any room you like.” Then he added, “You could even sell the house if you wanted.”

Li Xining grinned and asked, “Do I really have that much influence?” 

Lu Yuling replied with a nod, “Yep, this place is yours now.” 

The house was initially bought by Uncle Li for residence registration, meaning it technically belonged to Li Xining all along. Therefore, Lu Yuling thought that his girlfriend could do anything she wanted with it.
