Chapter 56.2

Sometimes a woman’s softness and affection could be the most powerful forces in the world. 

After his mother’s death, he used to be a free spirit, navigating life on his own. Now, he belonged to her completely—body, mind, and soul; therefore, he was no longer alone. Moreover, he just couldn’t live his life; he had to think more about her also.

Taking a deep breath, he looked at her earnestly and muttered, “Li Xining, will you marry me?” 

Li Xining was taken aback by the sudden proposal. She was over the moon, but she thought not to show it to him. “That depends on your performance,” she said in a casual tone.

Lu Yuling: “If I do well, will you say yes?” 

Li Xining kept her answer vague. “Let’s talk about it later.” 

With that reply, he felt a twinge of disappointment but didn’t give up. Showing his playful side, he said, “I’m all yours, yet you won’t marry me? That makes me feel pretty insecure.” 

Li Xining: “What a drama queen!” 

Lu Yuling replied, “What’s wrong with a drama queen? You picked this little princess, remember?” 

“Hmph! If we could really swap souls, I’d definitely teach you a lesson. You will call me “daddy” every day. I wouldn’t let you off the hook until you learnt to behave! You b*stard!” 

Lu Yuling sighed and playfully warned, “Listen, Li Xining, instead of dwelling on that, you should focus on making me happy. Otherwise, I might just have you crying and calling me Dad tonight!”

Li Xining sighed. “…” 

After a brief pause, she said softly, “I need to head home tonight.” 

Lu Yuling: “No worries. There will be more chances later.” 

Li Xining exclaimed. “You jerk!” 

Lu Yuling chuckled, speaking in a gentle tone, “You already know the deal, so I won’t go over it again. As long as you’re happy to help me out in the future, I’ll treat you well.” 

Li Xining playfully hit him on the back, saying, “In your dreams!” Then she poked him repeatedly with her finger. “You’re the one who’s serving me!” 

Lu Yuling couldn’t help but laugh. “Alright, Landlord’s Wife.” After that, he asked, “So, how do you think I did last night?” 

Truth be told, he did pretty well, but Li Xining wasn’t about to let him brag, so she replied grumpily, “I can barely get out of bed, and you’re asking if you did well? I’m just glad I didn’t take away your allowance.” 

Lu Yuling was truly upset this time. “Li Xining, you need to be honest with yourself.” 

Li Xining suppressed a laugh and said, “How am I not being honest? Is it really so wrong to think about your money?” 

Lu Yuling: “It’s not just about the money; it’s your attitude that matters.” 

Li Xining asked, “What’s wrong with my attitude?” 

Lu Yuling said directly, “You have one face in bed and another outside of it! That really hurts my feelings.” 

Li Xining grinned while saying, “What if I give you a twenty-dollar reward?”

“Twenty? Just twenty?” He sighed, feeling a bit hurt. “I can’t believe I’m only worth twenty bucks to you.” 

Li Xining: “You’re worth more than twenty.” Then she playfully poked him, saying, “So when are we eating? I’m starving.” 

Lu Yuling replied honestly, “If you keep hanging on to me like this, we’ll never get to eat.” 

Li Xining pouted. “So annoying!” 

Lu Yuling whined. “I cook for you, and take care of you at night, and you still say you hate it? How rude; I’m upset.” 

Li Xining replied bluntly, “I’ll send you 500 yuan later.” 

“Five hundred? That’s a lot!”Lu Yuling turned around, eyes wide in disbelief. “You’re not joking, are you?!” 

Li Xining laughed and chimed, “Why would I lie to you?” 

Still unsure, Lu Yuling hesitated and asked, “What’s the money for?” 

Li Xining answered calmly, “It’s for shopping at the supermarket later.” 

Lu Yuling: ‘… I knew it!’

Fuming, the little princess turned away, clearly annoyed and refusing to look at Li Xining.

‘A true princess indeed.’ Li Xining suppressed a laugh and added, “I’ll throw in an extra 500 yuan red envelope for your birthday.” 

Lu Yuling’s lips curled up for a moment before he quickly composed himself, saying with pride, “No thanks, I don’t need it.” 

Li Xining: “Are you sure you don’t want it?” 

Lu Yuling didn’t give a direct answer but said, “Birthday red envelopes should be genuine. If you want to give one, go ahead. If not, that’s cool too. I’m not bothered.”

‘Tsk, acting all high and mighty!’ But Li Xining didn’t push back this time. Instead, she responded cheerfully, “I’ll definitely give you one! I’ll send you the money right now!” 

After saying that, she dashed back to her room, opened WeChat, and sent Lu Yuling 1,200 yuan, adding an extra 200 just to make a point. Then she hurried back to the kitchen, waving her phone, “Look, I sent you 1,200 yuan! Do you think that shows I’m sincere enough?”

Lu Yuling was thrilled, like he’d just hit the jackpot. It had been ages since he’d seen that much cash after Li Xining took control of his money. But he played it cool and said, “Thanks.” 

Li Xining wasn’t satisfied with that response, so she pressed him, “Just tell me, am I sincere enough or not?”

For the sake of that extra 700 yuan, Lu Yuling reluctantly replied, “Yeah, it’s enough.”

Suddenly, Li Xining tugged at his shirt and asked, “So, do you have to show me some sincerity too?” 

‘Whoa, what’s going on here?’ Lu Yuling’s heart raced. All he could think about was the hundred yuan he had hidden between the shoe cabinets. He asked nervously, “What do you want from me?”

Li Xining gave a shy smile and got right to it. “So, when you got your pay cheque last week, didn’t Brother Zhao mention a raise for you this week?” 

Lu Yuling wasn’t just a key singer at the Green Shade Bar; he was a well-known star on the entire bar street. A lot of customers flock to the Green Shade just to see his performance. Because of that, Brother Zhao’s bar was always packed when Li Xining was on stage, raking in tens of thousands in a single night.

Other bar owners got jealous and started trying to lure Brother Zhao’s staff away. Brother Zhao paid a thousand per show, while others were offering two or three thousand.

Still, Lu Yuling wasn’t interested. He didn’t need that extra cash, and he wasn’t the type to be ungrateful. When he first joined Green Shade, he was just an unknown kid, and his confidence wasn’t what it was now. Brother Zhao never turned him away; instead, he always supported him.

Out of gratitude for that kindness, he couldn’t just leave.

Eventually, Brother Zhao caught wind of the poaching attempts. After checking out the offers, he felt a bit awkward and decided to make a pay raise.

Li Xining was there too when he talked about that with Lu Yuling. 

Every Sunday he would get paid, so as it was near Sunday this week, Li Xining was curious. “How much do you think Brother Zhao will increase your pay?” 

Lu Yuling let out a sigh of relief. 

That was a bit nerve-wracking. ‘As long as it’s not about personal money, it’s okay.’ He replied honestly, “I have no idea.”

Li Xining felt a bit let down and sighed, saying, “Alright, let’s chat about it after we get paid tomorrow. Just focus on making your meal.” With that, she turned and walked away.

Lu Yuling: ‘… Haha, typical woman!’
