After sending Lu Yuling off, Li Xining had just gotten back to her desk when Teacher Zhou approached her with a grin, asking, “Is Xiao Lu gone? What tasty food did he make for you today?”
Li Xining felt a bit shy with that question, “Oh, it’s nothing special. Just a regular meal.”
Teacher Zhou teased. “Oh, you even called it ‘regular’?”
Realizing she had slipped up, Li Xining quickly corrected herself. “I meant it’s just something to eat.”
Teacher Zhou chuckled at her, before replying, “I was just messing with you. By the way, did your mom say anything about going abroad?”
Li Xining’s heart dropped, and she nodded quietly.
Teacher Zhou continued. “So, what are your thoughts on that?”
Li Xining had been mulling over this issue all day yesterday. Ever since her mom brought it up, she couldn’t stop thinking about it. But the more she pondered, the more tangled her thoughts became. In the end, her mind was a jumble. Just thinking about it made her feel frustrated, and she was so worked up that she couldn’t sleep.
Finally, she let out a helpless sigh and admitted, “I really don’t know.”
Zhou Xiaolei, being wise and experienced, understood her feelings and expressed her inner feelings. “You want to go, but you’re torn about leaving your boyfriend. You worry he won’t be okay with it, that he might get mad, that the distance will be too much, that you won’t see each other, and that he might change while you’re studying abroad.”
Li Xining bit her lip and nodded.
Zhou Xiaolei didn’t just lay out the best way to handle things; instead, she shared her own story. “A year after I graduated from university, I went to study in the UK. By then, I had already met my husband, who was doing well in his career and couldn’t come with me. I found myself in a tough spot, just like you, torn between love and my studies. Balancing both was no easy feat.”
She paused for a moment, and Li Xining quickly jumped in, asking, “So what happened next? How did you juggle both?”
Zhou Xiaolei smiled and clarified, “It’s not just me; it’s us. We’re both in this together. He supports my dreams and encourages me to study abroad. He also told me not to overthink things. There will always be challenges for a couple to stay together for a lifetime. We can’t back down when things get tough; we have to face them together. Eventually, with his support, I went abroad. Honestly, studying alone overseas was pretty lonely. I missed him a lot, but thankfully, he would visit me often. It’s been four years of this back-and-forth. As I said, there has to be a mutual understanding between two people. You give me what I need, I give you what you need, and we work towards a common goal. That’s the only way we can stay together; otherwise, we’ll drift apart eventually.”
Li Xining got all of this, but she still felt unsure. “I haven’t talked to him about it yet, so I have no idea what he thinks.”
Zhou Xiaolei replied, “If he really loves you, he will support all your choices.”
Those words were really heavy and Li Xining stayed quiet. Even though she was confident that Lu Yuling would back her up no matter what, she just couldn’t decide this.
Zhou Xiaolei paused for a second and asked, “If it were you, would you support him fully without any regrets?”
Without a second thought, Li Xining replied, “Absolutely!”
Zhou Xiaolei responded with conviction, “Then he will too.” She continued, “Since this is about your relationship, you should definitely talk to him about it. He’ll help you figure things out.”
“I will definitely talk to him about it,” Li Xining said, “but I haven’t figured out when yet.”
She had promised him that she would always stand by his side, watch his debut, see him rise to the top, and become a superstar.
The reason she was struggling to decide on studying abroad wasn’t just because she didn’t want to leave him, but also because she hadn’t witnessed his debut live.
Even though she had no idea when he would debut, she was certain she couldn’t leave before that moment, or else she’d break her promise.
Zhou Xiaolei understood her situation. “Don’t stress, take your time to think it over. When you’re ready, just let me know what you decide.”
Li Xining nodded, “Yeah, okay.”
Once Zhou Xiaolei left, Li Xining grabbed her phone. She suddenly felt the urge to hear Lu Yuling’s voice.
But when she unlocked her phone, the first thing she noticed was a text from an unknown number. After opening it, she was taken aback.
