It was the winter, and the most difficult part at this time was getting out of bed. 

Even though Lu Yuling lived in an older neighbourhood, the heating there was really good. Typically, whether it was winter or summer, he would wear short sleeves and comfortable pants at home. At night, he had to use a light quilt to cover himself when he slept, or else he couldn’t rest because it got too warm.

Still, getting out of bed in winter was a struggle.

Since attending university, he hadn’t woken up at five o’clock. Even when he did morning exercises, he would still get up at six. On weekends, even when he had to drop Li Xining off at work, he would sleep until seven and then make her breakfast.

The only time he woke up at five was back in high school.

But today, as soon as the alarm went off at five, he opened his eyes, jumped out of bed, got dressed, and headed out without even having breakfast.

His mother-in-law had told him to be home by six, not a minute later.

He left before it was even 5:20. It was completely dark outside, but the streetlights were still on.

 Around 5:45, he parked his car at the entrance of the southern suburbs villa area and then called her. 

Even though Li Xining specifically asked him to call her when he left home this morning before going to bed last night, he wanted her to get a bit more sleep, so he didn’t call her when he left.

However, Li Xining didn’t set an alarm, thinking she would wake up when he called. So when the phone rang, she picked it up and saw it was almost six o’clock. She sat up on the bed angrily. “Why did you leave just now?”

“I’m already at the community gate.” When he had dropped her off before, he never went into the community, so he didn’t know which villa her family lived in.

“You’re such a pain! I told you to call me when you leave the house!”

Lu Yuling replied, “I just wanted you to sleep a little longer!”

Li Xining complained as she got out of bed. “I didn’t even have time to wash my face or comb my hair.”

‘So she is mad because she doesn’t have time to get ready.’ Lu Yuling chuckled and said, “It’s not like I haven’t seen you right after you wake up.”

“Ugh!” After that, she hung up the phone because she was too worn out to deal with this annoying guy any longer.

To save time, she didn’t bother changing her clothes before heading out. She just threw on a down jacket over her pyjamas. She jogged to the community gate, hopped into Lu Yuling’s car, and checked the time. It was five-fifty, and with five minutes to spare, she knew she could make it.

After taking a few anxious breaths, she shot him a glare and repeated, “Disgusting!”

Noticing how exhausted his girlfriend looked, Lu Yuling chose not to explain further and responded. “Alright, alright, I get it. I’m the worst. I’m the most annoying person ever.”

“You are!” Li Xining snapped back, “Drive faster. If you’re even a minute late, my mom will break your legs!”

Lu Yuling suddenly felt a rush of nerves and immediately pressed down on the gas.

With just five minutes to six, they both entered the house. 

At that moment, Yu Wenyin was already seated on the living room sofa, dressed impeccably. She wore a serious expression and had a cold demeanour, resembling Empress Dowager Cixi waiting for her ministers.

Li Xining had asked the housekeeper to get a pair of slippers ready for Lu Yuling the night before. After he changed into them, she nervously led Lu Yuling to the living room to meet Empress Dowager Yu.

Lu Yuling was so anxious that he started walking sideways. Once they reached the living room, he stood up straight, feeling uneasy but trying to act calm. “Auntie.” He awkwardly greeted her.

Yu Wenyin glanced at him with indifference and replied, “You arrived quite early.”

Li Xining thought her mom resembled Empress Dowager Cixi and muttered with a little bit of fear, “He hasn’t eaten yet.”

Empress Dowager Yu shot her daughter a glare and said, “Why are you dressed like that? What are you wearing? What’s wrong with you? Go change your clothes!”

Li Xining didn’t dare to talk back. She shot Lu Yuling a look that said, “Husband, I can only help you this far,” then quickly went to change her clothes in a well-behaved, sensible, and obedient way.

Only Empress Dowager Yu and Princess Lu remained in the living room.

The little princess was so nervous he didn’t even dare to breathe, feeling almost suffocated.

Yu Wenyin decided to leave the young man alone for a moment before finally saying, “Why are you just standing there? Take a seat.”

He didn’t want to ignore his mother-in-law’s request. He took a few steps and sat down on the sofa, but he sat up straight like a little kid in kindergarten, hands resting on his knees like he was being good.

Yu Wenyin didn’t pay him any attention and looked at him with a sneer, like a cabbage farmer looking at a pig. Eventually, she just turned her head away. 

Lu Yuling was so nervous that he could feel cold sweat trickling down his back. Fortunately, after a few minutes, Mr. Li and Mrs. Li came out of the bedroom.

The old couple’s bedroom was on the first floor. As soon as they opened the door, they noticed Lu Yuling sitting on the sofa.

Mr. Li was a bit surprised and smiled, saying, “Yuling, why did you come so early?”

Lu Yuling definitely couldn’t say it was his mother-in-law who told him to come so early. If he said so, it would sound like a complaint. “I was worried about being late.”

“You won’t be late. We’re leaving at seven.” Then Mr. Li asked again, “You haven’t eaten yet, have you?”

Lu Yuling nodded.

Mr. Li said, “Quick, go to the restaurant and eat; don’t just sit there.”

Lu Yuling didn’t dare to move and glanced at his mother-in-law first.

Yu Wenyin sighed, got up from the sofa, and said helplessly but with a hint of disdain, “Let’s go eat.”

Only then did Lu Yuling feel brave enough to stand up.

The nanny had prepared steamed buns, soy milk, and boiled eggs.

It was Lu Yuling’s first time having breakfast at Li Xining’s house, in front of his mother-in-law, so he was so nervous that he had no appetite and didn’t eat much. 

Li Xining was afraid that he would be hungry, so she peeled an egg for him. After putting the white and tender-shelled egg on Lu Yuling’s plate, she glanced at her mother cautiously.

Yu Wenyin ignored her and didn’t even look at her.

Then Li Xining picked up another meat bun for Lu Yuling.

At that moment, Lu Yuling was deeply moved. No one was better than his wife, and his wife loved him.
