Chapter 8
Li Xining confirmed that Lu Yuling was the person who had given her candy all these years. Her heart skipped a beat, and an unrecognised feeling rushed through her. ‘It turned out that it was really him… Why did he give me candy starting on the first day of high school? Is it because I gave him a pack of candy in the first year of junior high school? To repay me?’ The more she thought about it, the hotter Li Xining’s cheeks became, and her breathing became unsteady.
Xu Dongruo was the first to notice her abnormality. “Why is your face so red?”
“No.” Li Xining returned to her senses instantly, but the tension and panic in her expression could not be concealed.
“Oh my god, your face is almost turning into a tomato. What’s wrong with you?” Xu Dongruo asked anxiously.
Although she wanted to reply to her friend, it seemed that she couldn’t utter a single word because of her nervousness. Fortunately, the class bell rang at this time, and she hurried to sit down. Then she whispered. “Class is going to start, don’t talk.”
Xu Dongruo: “…”
Xu Dongruo didn’t have time to ask her friend again because the physics teacher, Mr. Li, came into the class.
Seeing the appearance of Mr. Li, Li Xining was frozen. He was holding homework papers with an ashen complexion, and the anger in his eyes could still be seen through the thick black-rimmed glasses.
Li Xining’s heart skipped a beat. ‘It’s over.’
Yesterday, Li Xining and Chen Lin gathered all the assignments at Mr. Li’s request. She now recalled that she had impulsively and furiously taken Lu Yuling’s blank physics homework sheet and given it to Mr. Li. When he saw this blank sheet, old man Li would become so furious that he would lose his cool and erupt. Therefore, any teacher who received a blank piece of paper among the collected homework would regard that behaviour as a provocation, right?
Li Xining suddenly had a bad premonition in her heart.
Sure enough, when Mt. Li walked up to the podium, he slammed the stack of papers in his hand onto the podium, making a muffled “bang”.
The whole classroom was silent for a moment. Everyone knew that the volcano was about to erupt.
Mr. Li held the podium with both hands and scanned the whole class. He didn’t speak until everyone buried their heads in their desks. “I asked your class to hand in homework, what’s the result? What did you hand in?” After speaking, he raised his hand and patted the stack of papers that had been thrown by his hand heavily, and he let out two dull sounds again. The sound was like thunder before a storm.
The hearts of everyone in the classroom trembled twice following the sound of “Thunder”.
Li Xining kept looking down at the table, nervous and frightened, not even daring to take a big breath.
Mr. Li continued. “I asked you to hand in your homework to let you do your homework and to let you do your homework well. How many people in your class have done it well? And copying. Can copying help you in the college entrance examination? Can you get into a good university? The most annoying thing is that there are still people who hand them in without writing a word! Why…do you think you are good? Do you think I can’t do anything to you?”
Li Xining held her breath for a moment, and her whole body became cold as if it were she who handed in the blank paper.
Immediately afterward, Mr. Li took a deep breath, as if he were afraid that he would be pissed to death, so he took a breath to control his emotions, and then said again, “Don’t think that I don’t know who handed over the blank paper. Before I expose you, I’ll give you a chance to admit it. If you admit your mistake, get out of the classroom within half a minute, and don’t let me see you in the classroom today. It will affect my mood in class.”
Everyone was frightened to their core except Lu Yuling. He leaned back in his chair indifferently, stared at Old Man Li the whole time, and listened to him calmly. After listening to the last concluding sentence, when he was about to stand up from the chair, someone stood up before him. It was Li Xining.
In an instant, the whole class was shocked. Lu Yuling was even more dumbfounded. ‘Why is she standing up? ‘
The physics teacher was even shocked by Li Xining’s sudden action. He clearly knew that the blank paper belonged to Lu Yuling, and he wanted to show others what would happen if they messed with him so no student would dare not hand over homework in the future.
But Li Xining disrupted his plan. “Why did you stand up?” No matter how bad-tempered old man Li was, he would not embarrass a good student with good character and good grades, especially Li Xining, who was in the top ten of the exam grade. So he went to Li Xining, patted her shoulder, and said in a kind tone, “You sit down first, and if you have something to talk about, talk after class.”
“I, I…” Li Xining has never done such a thing before. She was a well-behaved and good student. “It’s me, it’s me, my responsibility,” she muttered anxiously.
Mr. Li frowned. “Do you have any responsibility? What responsibility? Sit down quickly!”
Li Xining was still standing, still in a panic, but she thought of Lu Yuling again. She simply put her heart on the line and said in one breath, “He was going to do his homework yesterday, but I was in a hurry to collect the homework, so I didn’t let him do it. It’s because of me that he gave me the blank paper.”
Everyone in the back row knew what happened last night: Li Xining asked Lu Yuling to do his homework, but Lu Yuling just didn’t do it, even when he was given time, and said he wouldn’t lie to the teacher. Li Xining was so angry that he took his paper away.
It was not Li Xining’s fault, it was clearly Lu Yuling’s own fault. But no one expected that Li Xining would take the blame for Lu Yuling.
What’s the situation? What’s going on here? Did the goddess Xining have something in Lu Yuling’s hands?
In an instant, all eyes in the class focused on Lu Yuling.
Lu Yuling was still in shock. He also didn’t expect Li Xining to stand up for him. ‘What happened to her today? Why are you so nice to me? Just because I saved her yesterday? But am I worthy?’ His mind became a total mess.
After listening to Li Xining’s words, old man Li was angry and helpless. He wanted to take Lu Yuling’s knife to teach a lesson to the whole class, but the best student in the class stood up for him first. But if he let go of this matter because of Li Xining, he would lose his face, and who would do homework honestly in the future? So this time, he didn’t look at Li Xining as a good student and reprimanded her with a straight face. “I asked you to collect homework. Not to collect blank papers. Then why don’t you directly collect fifty-four blank papers? How easy it is! Don’t take this class, just take the book and go out.” With this action, he wanted to show other students that if he could kick out the best student in the class, the rest would be nothing.
Li Xining also expected this kind of consequence, but when she was kicked out of the classroom, she was still dumbfounded. Since she was in kindergarten, she had never been punished, let alone kicked out of the classroom. It was just embarrassing.
Everyone in the class was looking at her, their gazes were like thorns. She was ashamed and did not dare to look up, blushing up to her ears. After a few seconds, she gathered her review materials and a pen with trembling hands, lowered her head, and hurried out of the classroom, walking eagerly like a helpless fish eager to return to the sea.
After she left the classroom, Li Xining closed the red iron door and then took a deep breath. As the fresh morning air filled her lungs, her mind became clearer.
‘This is the first time in my life that I am so ashamed. That b*stard Lu Yuling!’
After Li Xining went out, no one dared to speak.
Mr. Li scanned the whole class again, finally fixed his eyes on the corner of the back door, and said mockingly, “Someone has gone out for you, so just sit there honestly and continue to hand in blank papers next time.”
Lu Yuling had been in a dazed state until this moment. When he heard Mr.Li’s mocking words, he came to his senses, stood up, and walked out of the class.
Li Xining had already put the book on the railing of the corridor. After hearing the noise, she turned her head and glanced at the back door. There stood Lu Yuling, with guilt-filled eyes, looking at her.
Li Xining ignored him, didn’t even give him another look, quickly withdrew her gaze, and focused her attention on the exercise book, thinking in her heart, ‘If you don’t come back to study after lunch today, I will… I’ll catch you!’
Lu Yuling couldn’t guess what Li Xining was thinking, but the only thing he was sure of was that she was angry with him. At the same time, he was eager to know, why she stood for such an ignorant b*stard like him?
